MEYER FAMILY; DRAGON CLAN
Brent was pacing outside the treasury fortified with magic where they had sealed the weapons with Kaiser's soul shards. For some reason, he felt very uncomfortable, as if something was about to go wrong. Perhaps, it was the unwelcome news from last night making his nerves jump. Or it could be the nagging doubt in his heart.
After what felt like centuries, the door opened. Brent quickly turned around to meet the top three dark sorcerers whom he called over with lots of resources and efforts. The three of them had grim expressions on their faces, just like the people from yesterday, and the week before. His heart immediately sank to the pits of his stomach in deep dread.
"How is it? Did you manage to shatter the soul?" He asked with a smile, hiding his nervousness.
The leader of the three mages wearing a black cloak sighed heavily and shook his head.
"You didn't succeed? What's that supposed to mean? You three are the best in the entire world in these kinds of things? Don't mention killing someone inside this dragon clan imperial city, killing someone a million miles away is a piece of cake for you guys. And I even provided weapons with his soul shards? Why are you still wasting time? With every moment Kaiser breathes, something goes wrong for me. He can't be left alive. Kill him for me. Do it now!" His voice was calm at the beginning, but toward the end, his voice kept rising till he was basically shouting in anger.
"Don't raise your voice at me unless you want to be the one dead before me." The leader whose face was covered with a dark cloak said coldly, slapping Brent's mind back to reality.
The dark mage was someone dangerous and filled with pride. Not just that, he was a mad man. He killed mercilessly and did not put anyone in his eyes. The Meyer family of the imperial dragon clan might be a behemoth revered by the entire earth, calling down rain and storms. But that doesn't mean he was afraid of them. He was someone confident in the strength of his arms, and the power of his dark art.
Besides, even though he was a thorn in the hearts of numerous people due to his arrogance and indiscriminate killing, they were still reluctant to rally round against him. After all, once in a while, there might be that stubborn enemy you might need help to eliminate. In addition to the fact that many powerful people have used his malicious services at one time or the other, either to protect themselves or to create havoc. Even if they don't like him, they wouldn't dare take active steps to restrict him. Otherwise, it might boomerang on them. He was a ticking time bomb. Inviting him was a problem, making sure he leaves without making a mess was an even bigger problem.
Brent gritted his teeth, trying to contain his anger and faced the man.
"Do you think I should not be angry? How much did I spend to bring you here? Lots of people in the clan are counting on you and I to get the job done. I could understand those wastes from last time disappointing me, but why must you do the same? You of all people should give me a way out. Shaking your head is not the answer I want from you. I want result, I need fucking results for all the efforts I have made so far."
The leader of the three man team of dark sorcerers sighed again, probably placated with Brent's words of placing all hopes in him and that he was the best, above other sorcerers.
"I understand you hold me in high regard and you're hoping for a miracle. But I'm not God that can create things from nothing. There are no soul shards in those weapons. They're just normal heaven ranked treasures with a bit of spirituality in them. It might be an earth shaking treasure with nice abilities, but I can't use them to kill the one you spoke about. There's no single strand of a living soul in the weapons. There's no soul in it. How can I cast the soul devouring spell without the target's soul?"
"That's right. Young master, there's no trace of soul shards in any of the weapons, the soul trapping jar or even the room. There's nothing there." The second sorcerer emphasized while the third nodded in agreement.
"What do you guys mean? I personally checked it before we sealed it. There were definitely Kaiser's soul in the two weapons. Even if the one in the silk disappeared, the one in the bracelet should still be there. Not just that, it was in the soul trapping jar, and the jar never showed signs of being tampered with. The room was sealed with powerful magic, the room was guarded every second by powerful guards and was placed under strict surveillance. How do you want me to believe that the soul shards mysteriously disappeared by themselves?" Brent asked in frustration and clenched his fists, trying his best to put up a calm front.
"All we know is that there was no soul shard. There's a possibility that it was tampered with." The third sorcerer chipped in.
"Impossible. No one could have entered here."
"Then there are only two possibilities as to why the soul shards mysteriously disappeared. One, it was destroyed. There's a technique to destroy a soul shard no matter how far the owner might be from it. Which is the most impossible and ridiculous idea, because such methods are very dangerous to the body. Not only would the owner lose almost all their cultivation, they would become sickly or turn into a fool. In the case of a severe backlash, the person might die instantly. So this method is truly impossible to use no matter how mad such a person could be. After all, no one will willingly make themselves run mad and die."
Brent frowned at this. Kaiser might be deranged but he wouldn't do something so rash and endanger his family, especially now that Anthony had gone missing with 98% probability of being already dead.
"So, what's the second possibility?"
"The second possibility is that the owner of the soul shard came in here and reabsorbed the soul shards into his body which is even more ridiculous and laughable. With the kind of traps and fortifications set around this place, even someone of my level can't come in and leave safely, talk more of doing something as hard as calling back a soul shard. Something I can't do even with all my skills and level of cultivation, your so called cousin doing it would be even more impossible. There's no way he came here and the traps didn't get triggered. If it was someone from your camp who stole it, taking it back to him would be the best thing. And you would have found out that it's missing as soon as they take it out." The leader of the dark sorcerers said again.
Brent shook his head in frustration. The people who guarded the place were his most trusted people, in addition to the fact that he was watching the surveillance all the time.
"Where did the soul shards go? How did it disappear after all my efforts?" Brent roared and punched the wall in frustration.
"No one knows that for now. However, whoever owns those soul shards should not be messed with. If he could do such a confusing thing, he's definitely not simple. We examined the surroundings, but there was no sign of forced entry." The third sorcerer added.
"Is there no way to kill him? I'm willing to add something extra on top. Once he's dead, I will pay you all handsomely." Brent quickly whispered, making one more final attempt filled with desperation.
The leader of dark sorcerers scoffed, while the other two kept an expressionless face.
After a while, the second one finally spoke.
"Your target doesn't seem to be simple. Maybe you have a way to gather the items needed to cast a death curse, or remove the protective barriers around his house. But if the target is too powerful, it would just be a waste of effort. The owner of those items has a fate that can't be divinated. Such people that always seem to be shrouded by halos are unpredictable and dangerous. He could simply send the curse back to the sender, which would hurt the caster and create lots of problems. It's better to lie low and test his bottom line to see the true extent of his powers. Otherwise, you will only end up wasting more money than you already did."
Naturally, the mages have heard about Kaiser Meyers, the crazy tyrant of the imperial dragon clan. Someone unfathomable and powerful enough to make a soul shard disappear, daring to cast a spell at him was something none of them was stupid enough to do. What people fear the most was the unknown. Doing something that has a two way danger point is something they dare not do. If Kaiser was more powerful than the caster, he could automatically reverse the spell and kill the sorcerer. They were not so loyal to Brent that they would willingly sacrifice their lives.
"We are leaving." The leader of the dark sorcerers said coldly and left, not paying the furious Brent who was feeling dizzy any attention.
