"Acheeew!" A sneezing sound burst out as Max shot from the building he had been sent into, his wings flapping wildly to stabilize his body. He landed with a smooth thud and immediately turned to glare at the leader of the dark forces, who stood there smirking, unshaken by the display.
Jim was still in the middle of his battle with the other demon vessels. He was holding up admirably, but it was only a matter of time before exhaustion began to set in.
"I was confused," the leader spoke, his smirk unwavering as he continued stepping forward steadily, his gaze locked on the dragon. "I was confused why the two vessels I sent didn't deliver and I kept wondering what was going on.
Did Ava betray me and kill them or not? But at the end of the day, the others delivered the fresh humans, so that couldn't be the case. Then I concluded that something must have happened, but I didn't know what.
I decided to send some vessels ahead to investigate, but before they could go far, your aura along with that of the other dragon was unleashed. That was when I finally realized what was happening. Dragons had invaded the town, hence I decided to…"
"YAWWWWN!" Max yawned loudly, snapping his fingers in front of his mouth.
"I'm sorry, am I boring you?" the leader asked, teeth grinding as he stared at the dragon.
"Why else do you think I'm yawning? Or did you think I was just naturally tired? Tch." Max snapped back, irritation lacing his voice.
"I will…"
"I just want to know one thing," Max interrupted, his expression bored but eyes sharp as lightning. "How did you become what you are?"
"And why should I tell you?!" the leader growled, eyes blazing with fiery intensity.
"Because I asked." Max retorted, his eyes flashing yellow as his wings shifted slightly. "Or never mind. I already know. You must have needed power, so you went to a certain corporation and secured a se…"
"I was turned by a real demon." The vessel cut him off.
"Wait, what?!" Max was genuinely stunned, mouth slightly agape as he stared at the figure in front of him.
"Yes. I got my powers from a demon. Though he was powerful, he still didn't have enough energy to fully turn me. Hence, he made me a vessel, telling me I could be fully transformed if I consumed enough humans.
Then he presented me with a few dozen serums, which I injected into these men, turning them into a batch of demon vessels. I invaded this town to feed freely and grow stronger." The leader smirked faintly, his gaze never leaving Max.
'Wait, he was turned by a real demon? Did a new demon seep into our world again? Or was it that Proto-Echelon we encountered that turned him? If it was truly that one, then this story is plausible. According to A-rank hunter Elijah, he said two demons seeped into our world, and then their signals disappeared, making them nearly impossible to trace.
Wait! Two demons? Oh shit! How could I forget?!' Max dragged his palm across his face as his heart pounded violently against his chest.
'We killed one Proto-Echelon, but what if it wasn't just one? What if two protos actually came into our world? If that's the case, then where is the second one? Why didn't it show up while we were battling the first proto?
Could it be the one that turned this vessel here? Shit, shit, shit! I still don't think I'm strong enough to actually fight a proto right now. What is going on? Damn it! I'm such a foo…'
"Are you ignoring me?!" The leader of the dark forces shouted in pure rage, snapping Max out of his thoughts in an instant. In a flash, he saw the vessel darting towards him at blistering speed, a streak of deadly intent.
'Is he just a vessel? His speed is too great. Oh right! He's on the verge of becoming a real dem…focus Max!' The dragon yelled in his mind just in time to see a pair of claws streaking toward his neck.
In a blink, Max moved faster than even his own thoughts. His swings met the claws with incredible force, propelling him backward in a blur. The claws struck the air with a booming crack, sending a gust of wind echoing outward.
The moment his feet touched the ground, Max boosted his speed with a powerful flap of his wings and rocketed forward like a living blur, appearing in front of the vessel in an instant. His fist shot forth at a velocity no mere human or vessel could hope to dodge. But the man in front of him was ready.
His palm shot forth, clamping onto Max's fist in a violent clash. The collision unleashed a burst of wind that blasted outwards, cracking the ground beneath them and sending fissures snaking across the surface. The two locked eyes, glaring with absolute intensity, a silent challenge passing between them.
"You are strong, but I…"
"I'm in no mood to speak with someone beneath me." Max whispered coldly, launching his second fist at the vessel's face at lightning speed. The vessel moved to block, but a smirk crossed Max's face as his knuckles ignited in a brilliant orange blaze.
In a flash, a fireball erupted from his knuckles, smashing into the vessel's open palm. The impact sent it jerking backward, giving Max the perfect opening. He drove his feet into the cracked ground, twisting his body and locking the vessel in his grip, forcing him into helpless submission.
"Have a taste of your own medicine!" With every ounce of strength, Max kicked off the ground and spun violently, hurling the vessel through the air. The vessel crashed into the same building Max had been launched from earlier, leaving everyone around gasping in sheer shock at the destructive display.
