Facing the Apocalypse with My Other Selves

Chapter 99: The Tremendous Potential of Magic! (Part 2)

Moreover, these monsters are already tangibly impacting the ocean's ecology.

They clearly do need to eat; everywhere they go, they bring massive destruction.

A single colossal shadow, just moving, can trigger storms and tsunamis on the ocean's surface!

Some islands, and even island nations, are now facing imminent extinction.

Shen Yu wasn't idle either.

Once he captured a few samples, he immediately sent the living specimens to the other three civilizations.

However, judging from the consumption values of the Gray Mist, there's not much hope for the Interstellar Civilization or the Martial Arts Civilization; the main hope still lies with the Magic Civilization.

And at this moment in the Magic Civilization, Wizard Shen Yu had gathered a group of Great Mages, all examining several mutated marine creatures.

"Are these the disaster beasts from another realm?"

The mages were obviously highly intrigued, and Ascota was one of them.

He had officially resigned from his position as Emperor, and was now serving as the Chief Mage of the Magic Empire.

The rest of the mages also stared intently, not blinking.

By now, they all knew Wizard Shen Yu's true identity, and were awe-struck by the vastness of the All Heavens World.

Even with the threat of the gods looming over the entire world, their curiosity about the alien realm was just as fervent.

That was a place even the gods couldn't reach!

Standing on the stage of the All Heavens World, the gods were just as weak as them!

"The trial takers from that world have confirmed that magic can have miraculous effects on these mutated creatures," Wizard Shen Yu said. "Study this as much as you can; our fight against the divine can't be separated from help from the other trial takers. The Plague Potion is the best proof, and getting support from them is far easier than trying to call on the Divine Court."

Wizard Shen Yu used this world's cognition habits to give some explanation of the Association's existence.

Overall, it's somewhat similar to the concept of the Immortal Court in the Martial Arts World.

The Divine Court and the trial takers undertaking Ascension Trials.

This was something the mages could wholly comprehend.

"I can feel that these creatures contain special energies within their bodies," Ascota's expression grew much more serious. "And they're extremely violent."

"Yes." Another Great Mage, who was testing with spells, quickly withdrew his magic with a troubled expression. "It's extremely violent—more so than the most ferocious Divine Power. It's saturated with a frenzied urge to kill. It's hard to imagine: if this power is driven by some Divine Spirit, just how mad that spirit would be."

"You mean…" Wizard Shen Yu had realized something too. "This energy is a bit similar to a Divine Spirit's power?"

"This is forbidden knowledge; they don't teach it in class." Acosta wasn't surprised Wizard Shen Yu wasn't aware, and he explained, "Besides the difference in power level, the greatest difference between Divine Power and Magic Power is 'spirituality'. Each Divine Spirit's power contains their own influence, which is why followers and Divine Mages who gain Divine Art even have personalities that resemble their gods."

"Isn't that just because of faith?" Wizard Shen Yu was a little shocked, but also a bit enlightened.

In this world, some followers truly can gain power from the gods they believe in.

They're called Divine Warriors or Divine Mages.

And the personalities of these people generally relate closely to their chosen gods.

For example, followers of the God of War are war maniacs—each of them is fanatical about warfare, actively pushing all kinds of wars across the planes and deeply participating.

Other followers are about the same.

Followers of the Flame God love fire, followers of the Moonlight God are obsessed with moonlight.

Until now, Wizard Shen Yu had thought this was just their way of expressing faith. After all, it's perfectly normal for followers to actively move towards their gods in all aspects.

But now it seemed—Divine Power itself carries the influence of the Divine Spirit's will?

"So—is there any good solution?" Wizard Shen Yu spoke up again.

This time, the mages glanced at each other.

If this force really is comparable to Divine Power, then as mages, they're still helpless.

Otherwise, they wouldn't be unable to deal with a mere Divine Punishment.

Finally, Acosta spoke up:

"Maybe we could try the Magic Stripping Technique."

"Magic Stripping Technique?" Wizard Shen Yu knew this spell, but his brows knit slightly.

It's actually a widely used spell.

The purpose is to strip certain special magic power from items or creatures.

It's usually used to handle magic guide devices or curse-type invasive spells.

But its strength isn't great.

Not to mention dealing with Divine Power—even troublesome magic is sometimes too much for it.

If you could just strip all unwanted magic away, magic guides and curses would have lost all utility long ago.

One Great Mage immediately used the Magic Stripping Technique on the mutant creature.

As expected, nothing changed.

But Wizard Shen Yu wasn't disappointed.

After all, the real Shen Yu didn't expect them to resolve it outright.

Even if only the direction is clarified, or decent suggestions are given, it would save a lot of Gray Mist.

A few more existing research results, or potentially usable magical basics, could save even more.

And now, Wizard Shen Yu had already understood the true advantages of magic.

Compared with technology's prowess over material, or Martial Arts' superiority in life strengthening and combat, magic's strength is its versatility.

It doesn't just affect the material world. In energy, soul, life enhancement and combat, it also has its own unique characteristics.

To a certain extent, with ongoing magical technology research, magic's potential is limitless, just like technology.

However—magic may have infinite potential, but for now, these mages are just too weak.

The entire Plane's history—over four thousand years—and the period of rapid magical development has only been this one century since the Magic Empire was founded.

Comparing to tech development on the Mother Star, it probably doesn't even reach the level of the 1970s or 80s. At best, maybe equal to that era.

For example, even the strongest mage, Acosta, doesn't have much magic power; his most powerful spell is, at best, the strength of a missile.

He claimed to have wiped out over ten thousand cavalry before, but that depended on highly favorable terrain.

The cavalry's mobility was totally neutralized.

If it was on open ground and they scattered, even killing a few hundred would mean he had ample magic power!

Not to mention, although a lot of magic has been invented in this century, it's still basic.

Their thinking isn't liberated.

Controlling energy means just crudely launching fireballs or wielding thunder.

Why not develop a railgun?

The previous Wizard Shen Yu just regretted transmigrating right after high school; if he'd gone to college for science and engineering, or even finished grad school, gotten a doctorate, he wouldn't just be an excellent mage—he'd be a prodigy mage!

Of course, this world's magic does shimmer brilliantly at times.

Like Teleportation Magic and Repair Magic.

These spells once left Wizard Shen Yu in awe, marveling at the magic's wonder and vastness.

But it's not enough—far from enough!

Not only is stronger magic technology needed to battle the gods, but also to help other worlds.

In Wizard Shen Yu's heart, the capabilities this world should demonstrate shouldn't fall much short of the Interstellar Civilization!

So at this moment, although not truly disappointed in the mages' weakness, Wizard Shen Yu still wore an utterly crestfallen look.

"Our civilization is just way too weak," he slowly gazed around, "Even in worlds without magic power or any supernatural force, those humans can still create power that far surpasses ours with their own intelligence. What pains me most is, all of us know how terrifyingly great magic's potential is—magic is so much more than what we're seeing now!"
