Just as I had ordered, the vampires attacked.
The loud noise from their generator was attracting zombies, so the moment the vampires tore down their walls, all the zombies outside raced towards the mansion. Through, a few of them got caught in the traps, but a lot of them still managed to make it through and were heading straight towards the mansion.
I used my thermal vision to get a read on what was happening inside the mansion. I spotted five heat signatures in the house in total. Though only one was on the move, as the rest of them seemed to be holed up together.
The one moving stood at the window with a hunting rifle in his hand. It was a middle-aged man wearing glasses. He pointed his rifle at the zombies slowly creeping towards his mansion and began firing at them.
"What is he doing?" Isabella mumbled while looking at the man with a frown on her face.
I didn't know much about rifles, but the way the man was holding the gun seemed a bit awkward, and he was missing every shot. Seeing how fruitless his effort was, the man began to panic, then rushed back into the mansion. At the same time, I got up from the spot I was hiding.
"Come on, it's time we act," I said to Isabella, already making my way towards the mansion. "Handle the zombies on the outside. I'll go on ahead."
I left Isabella to take care of the zombies outside while I headed inside the mansion. The inside of the mansion was just as luxurious as the outside, but because of the order I gave to the vampires, most of it was now wrecked with sizable holes in the walls and even sections of the ceiling collapsing.
As I walked through the mansion, I heard screams and the sound of gunshots. The family of five was all gathered in a room upstairs with the vampires coming after them. There was the middle-aged man I saw along with three children and a pale, sickly-looking woman lying helplessly in bed while one of the vampires stood over her with a vicious smile on his.
"Mom!" one of the kids shouted. He couldn't be any older than 10 years old.
"Stay away from her!"
They all wanted to get to the woman, but they were being blocked by the second vampire I sent. Their performance was really convincing. If I didn't know better, I would have thought they wanted to kill the family of five.
They were doing a really good job playing the villains, but now it was my time to play the hero.
I went after the vampire standing over the woman first. Her face was pale and sickly, but she seemed to be worried about her husband and kids. The vampire raised his hands as if he was about to take her life.
I waited for the last possible second, when the kids thought they would lose their mother and the husband thought he would lose his wife. That was when I intervened, stopping the vampire when his hand was mere inches away from her throat.
For obeying me, I gave the vampire a quick death by ripping out its heart. The other vampire turned towards us.
'Hmm? What is she doing?'
Suddenly, tears began to flow down from her eyes.
Oh, that's right. The vampire I had killed was her lover. I wonder how many centuries they have been together. Though I guess it doesn't matter. With how the world is, it's kill or be killed. They allowed themselves to be so weak that they were used like a toy by me. That is why it's so important to be the strongest.
It is strange…
I never thought like this before. Ever since the apocalypse started, I've been changing. I'm no longer the lazy kid who wants to sit around and do nothing. Now I have different dreams. Dreams of building a pack so powerful that no one can match it.
This feeling that has been welling up inside of me is because of all the things that have happened. The four horsemen and the woman with the orange eyes just like mine. All of these were connected, but I just don't know how. And I keep getting this sinking feeling that there was an opponent out there waiting for me to face them.
The vampire charged at me with tears in her eyes as she stared at the person who killed the one she loved most. Yet still, she knew her fate was to die by my hand just like he did, and just like I did with the last vampire, I killed her quickly, ending her suffering. Her body fell lifeless to the ground.
The family looked on in shock, wondering if I was friend or foe. Immediately, the middle-aged man pointed his rifle at me while shielding his children behind him.
"Who are you and what do you want from us?" he demanded.
"Don't worry, I'm not with the vampires. I mean you no harm. I only came because I heard the screams. My friend outside is killing all the zombies that invaded your home."
The man looked outside to see all the zombies that were entering his mansion now dead. His mouth hung open slightly in disbelief. He also noticed that his walls were completely destroyed.
It was also then that he realized that he was in complete darkness since his generator was destroyed. He also noticed the terrible shape his home was in with most of it being destroyed.
"Now that you are all safe, I'll take my leave now."
I turned to leave, but just before I even got to the exit, I was stopped.
"Wait!"
The man looked a bit hesitant, but he gritted his teeth and lowered his weapon. With his mansion and everything destroyed, he had no choice but to talk with the stranger who just saved his life.
"Who are you exactly?"
I smiled as I answered his question.
"I run a settlement not too far from here. My friend and I were just passing by when we saw you get attacked."
"A settlement?" His eyes widened. "What kind—"
He went quiet in an instant when he saw my eyes glow orange, and he raised his rifle and aimed it at my face.
"It's a pack of werewolves."
