Reincarnated as a Lizard

Chapter 83: Seen Through

Continuing to stay on the ground unmoving as the fight between the humans and the ancient dire wolves continued, Scaly began to slowly recover her strength as she looked around for an opportunity to escape from her current location without being focused down by the large number of humans on top of the wall.

After all, if they realized that she was alive, they would undoubtedly make sure that she wouldn't have a chance of surviving the next attack. Making it hard for her to escape like she had done this time around.

Although… Even if the humans didn't hit her directly and missed most of their attacks like last time, her injuries were already far too great for her to endure such an attack.

In the end, she could only continue to look across the vast grass field that seemed to provide no cover against the humans standing on top of the wall with a look of helplessness on her face.

No matter what direction she looked, there wasn't anywhere she could run without the humans on top of the wall having a clear sight of her. Especially considering her bright blue scales that essentially turned her into a moving target that was easy for anyone to spot amidst the sea of green grass.

Waiting for the battle between the humans and the ancient dire wolves to end was an option, but not one she believed would be any less dangerous for her.

After all, she had already seen how the humans gathered the corpses of the monsters they killed and dismantled them… And given her beautiful scales and how she heard humans talking about them, she had a feeling that some would come down to try and take them the moment the battle came to end.

In such a situation, the only reason she would wait around for the battle to end would be if she had a death wish and wanted to face off against all of the humans by herself. Not really that much of an option in her eyes.

As she was trying to figure out how to get out safely from her current situation, Scaly inevitably felt her gaze drifting towards the group of ancient dire wolf cubs fighting with the humans without any response from the humans on the top of the wall.

Why don't those humans on top of the wall just kill those dire wolf cubs? After all, they are killing quite a few humans…

Curiously glancing between the ancient dire wolf cubs and the top of the wall as she thought this to herself, Scaly's mind began working far harder than it had done before as she tried to understand the reason behind this-

Ah! It's because there are humans there! They don't attack because they are afraid of harming those humans!

And with her brilliant mind, she managed to figure out the reason after pondering over the matter for a little over five minutes. At the same time, giving her enough time to recover enough to move around unhindered by the injuries she had received from the earlier attack.

If they can make use of humans to avoid getting targeted by those on the wall, so can I!

Coming to a decision in her mind as she realized that the humans avoided attacking the places where there were other humans, Scaly didn't waste a second as she took off in the direction of the battlefield between the ancient dire wolf cubs and the humans.

"That lizard is still alive!"

"Let's just focus on it again and make sure we kill it this time around!"

"Don't! It's far too close to those outside the wall. If we attack, we might end up killing them as well… And we will have to suffer the punishment for doing so after the battle ends!"

"But the lizard, it-"

"No! Wait until it leaves the range of the battle."

Spotting Scaly almost the moment she rushed out, some of the humans on top of the wall wanted to take action to kill her, but were quickly stopped by the rest, as she had managed to rush into the battlefield between the dire wolf cubs and the humans outside the walls.

Luckily for her, the battlefield in question wasn't that far away from where she had jumped over off the wall or she might not have been able to make it there before the humans on top of the wall launched another attack towards her.

"Hm? Another monster?"

"A lizard monster… Ah! It should be the one that entered the town not too long ago!"

"Really!? To think it would show up here… You three go over and deal with it. Don't let it escape!"

At the same time Scaly reached the battlefield, the little over twenty humans still left alive fighting against the ancient dire wolf cubs instantly noticed her. Resulting in three of the humans breaking off from the larger group to confront her.

[Human, Knight, lvl 31]

[Human, Earth Mage, lvl 33]

[Human, Hunter, lvl 30]

Looking at these three humans as they approached her, Scaly could not help silently breathing out a sigh of relief.

Finally! An opponent that was close to her own level of strength instead of the constant stream of overpowered humans or monsters she had encountered ever since she had found herself on top of the mountain that the human town was located next to.

If the humans who came after her again turned out to be level 50 or something, she really wouldn't have had any clue on how to get out of her current situation. The level 30 humans on the other hand, was something she was more than confident in handling, even given her current injured state.

Rooar-!

Or that was at least what she thought until she realized that the humans weren't the only ones who wanted to kill her, as two of the ancient dire wolf cubs also rushed over towards her following closely behind the three humans.

Clearly, they didn't want her to interfere in their battle and wanted to get rid of her as fast as possible. No such thing as solidarity between monsters in the face of humans…

Facing the three humans was fine, but also having to now face two ancient dire wolf cubs, Scaly felt that it was a little beyond her given her injured state.

Whoosh~!

With this in mind, she decided against fighting the five and instead charged past them before they had a chance to attack her. Intending to get straight through the battlefield between the humans and the ancient dire wolf cubs and run in the direction of the small patch of forest that was barely visible in the distance.

Knowing that if she could make it to the forest, she should be able to escape with the cover of the trees.

More importantly, the part of the forest she had spotted wasn't the same as the one located at the base of the mountain, but a different forest that wasn't related to the mountain of the ancient dire wolf. Hopefully meaning that the ancient dire wolf wouldn't come chasing after her.

"Ah!? It's trying to run away!?"

"Don't worry, the moment it leaves this place, it will be attacked by those on the walls, it won't be able to escape."

Seeing Scaly escaping, the three humans didn't chase after her and instead just came to a stop. Understanding that she would be attacked by the humans on top of the wall the moment she left the range of the battle between them and the ancient dire wolf cubs.

Whoosh-!

Understanding this as well, Scaly was forced to come to a stop after seeing that the humans didn't chase after her like she had expected. Having originally wanted them to chase after her and keep a distance between them just large enough to prevent the humans on top of the wall from acting against her. Safely allowing her to reach the forest in the distance.

However, from the looks of things, the humans were far smarter than she had expected, as they didn't chase after her and instead just observed her to see if she really ran away. Understanding just as well as she did, that the humans on top of the wall would attack her if she got far enough away from them.

Damnable humans! Why aren't you a little dumber!?

Cursing silently inside as she realized that her plan wouldn't work, Scaly could only reluctantly turn around and face the three humans together with the two ancient dire wolf cubs while trying to think of a solution to get them to chase after her.

Though, considering that they already seemed to know about her plans and the fact that she wasn't strong enough to overwhelm them with her current strength, Scaly soon ended up stuck in a difficult battle. Having to deal with both humans and ancient dire wolf cubs at the same time.
