The Rise of Quetzalcoatl

Chapter 343: Harnessing Portals

"Same guys tried to take my business yesterday, but your men took care of it. I just wanted to thank you for giving me so much assistance and protection,"

"No problem, but you should probably thank the actual people who protected you," I smiled, with three men taking off the hoods to their raincoats before filling in the rest of the seats.

His eyes lit up before quickly handing them the same order that I usually get.

"Just put it on my card… I don't want you to go out of business from having it getting taken, but I also don't want you to lose money,"

"Yes, ma'am… Now eat up; that's her favorite order, so if you have any complaints, take it to her," The old man smiled, and the three men sitting around me swiftly shook their heads side to side.

Not long after they scarfed down such a delicious light meal, I continued to walk through the streets of Tokyo, seeing rush hour soon hit just as I arrived at the designated building.

"Welcome back, your highness. Same dungeon as always?" A woman with a tablet asked me upon running right in front of me, sweat dripping down her forehead and her breathing being slightly stifled by the fact she was trying to hide the fat as she sprinted over here.

"I heard we obtained some new dungeons. Were Nuala's experiments successful?" I asked before being greeted by a familiar voice.

"How about you look around at your surroundings," Nuala said, walking over to me in some casual sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

"I was just kidding," I chuckled before giving her a fistbump and following her down to her office, which I had sponsored and taken care of specifically from my own pockets.

It wasn't cheap in the slightest, but at least everything went smoothly since almost everything was personally managed by yours truly.

Nuala, on the other hand, was just the lead scientist running the experiments and using the lab, equipment, and materials that I gifted to her to try and make a breakthrough with the portals.

If we could fully access the power of portals and traverse different dimensions, we could easily become god-like beings who can absorb new civilizations into one giant galactic nation… it would be amazing, but at the same time hard to imagine fully working smoothly.

The amount of work and planning I would need could cripple me for life, but if that's what it takes to achieve that much power, I wouldn't mind sacrificing a few brain cells.

"Alright, and we're here," Nuala smirked, spinning around in her office before walking up to a blank stone wall. "Just kidding~."

VWOOP

The wall opened like a magical gate leading into a new world of innovation and very confusing pieces of technology, which almost all seemed like failures.

She had twenty-five assistants at first, but of course, working with something so dangerous, she ended up only having fifteen around completion.

It was truly sad to see such talents go, but it's not like I forced them to do it… they just followed their passion, and I gave them the right to do so… with a bit of forced overtime, but it is what it is for the sake of the future.

As we carefully stepped through the scattered failures, I saw the tired expressions of each scientist, but they were nowhere near as dreadful as before.

Previously I expected some to try and kill themselves, but now that the project is finally done, they were allowed to rest peacefully… though coming to work was still necessary unless they wanted none of the juicy paychecks I presented to them each month.

As we walked further and further into the lab, through winding doors, long stairways leading down, and long empty hallways, Nuala sparked another conversation.

"So, what is this that I heard about… a war?"

"Yep, but you don't have to participate… I know what you've been going through," I patted her on the back while she slowly stroked her right forearm, gently massaging it as if reminiscing about the past.

"So, what do you want from me if you should be preparing for a war? Don't tell me you want me to weaponize this technology. I-I'm done killing, and I won't make something that will be used for bloodshed," She lightly stuttered.

"Girl, I'm just here to level up more. Don't worry, I remember our contract," I chuckled, lightly patting her head.

"Tch… you asshole,"

"What did I do?" I smirked before we pushed through one last door and were nearly knocked off of our feet as we approached a portal so massive that it had to be lowered into the ground; otherwise, it would have sprouted into the surrounding buildings.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Nuala chuckled as she looked down at the gray portal with solid gray rock as its frame.

Multiple people were in glass boxes, observing it and taking notes, all while we only got closer and closer to it.

"It took a few tries, and a few ummmmmm… interdimensional connecting drones-"

"Ah… So that's why you suddenly started asking for more funding… and how many of those billion-dollar drones did you use?"

"J-Just a few… like five… six… seven?" She stuttered, and as a vein bulged from my forehead, she quickly wrapped her arm around mine.

"B-But! We managed to obtain amazing results!" She wearily chuckled, pointing down at the massive portal, and if it truly was what I was thinking of, then I guess I could forgive her. "C-Come with me,"

I followed her to one of the observing glass boxes and sealed ourselves in with another assistant who was rummaging around, attempting to tidy up the place as their boss just walked in.

We soon walked over to a large screen and a controller right beside it, allowing me to see a decently sized drone wheeling through the planes of a dark and dusty place.

From above, the sound of monstrous beasts rang in the speakers, sending a shiver down my spine.

"We could only experience them through virtual reality… but now we've finally found another dungeon with Titans… and it's for our use only! Isn't that incredible-!"

She was suddenly cut off by a shadow coming down and stomping the drone, crushing yet another piece of machinery worth more than fifty times her salary.

"O-Oops?"
