Shadow Weaver: Sole Heir Of The Night

Chapter 57: Great Star

Enzo sat on the sofa fidgeting with his fingers as he filled the limited information he knew on the application.

A formal education, Enzo didn't have. But he could at least read and write.

"Huh, what does PID number mean?" Enzo muttered under his breath as he looked at a particular tab on the application form.

There was so much he didn't know. He was not only in a new region, he was applying for school for the first time. Of course, he didn't know.

"PID number, it's your personal identification number. The one you use to check in when you arrive in a new region…" Beside him, a rather cold voice sounded, a blanket look on his face.

"Uhhhh." Enzo looked over at the young man with a tinge of confusion on his face. He still didn't quite understand what he meant; he knew nothing of this.

"Check your HUD, it's on the profile page," responded the young man once more but with a tinge of frustration. He spoke while pointing to the back of Enzo's ear where a black implant was.

"Ahh, that's true." Enzo, feeling a bit embarrassed, opened up his HUD and scrolled through it. In hindsight, he could have just used the HUD to identify and answer each of these questions.

"If you're done with your applications, please step forward for screening."

Inside a square booth, a robotic voice resounded in a low tone that was audible to them. Immediately after, around seven people seated on the sofas stood up and formed a straight line in front of the booth.

'This is a place for the rich, surely.'

Enzo couldn't help but mutter at the sight of the relaxed manner of screening. If it was this easy, wouldn't everyone be a member of the Dual Moon Institute?

But it wasn't, and he knew it. Forget getting aboard the World Train, which was reserved for the elites; navigating the mountain terrain without getting lost was something the average denizen could not do.

Then there were the several layers of security around the settlement. Clearly, this relaxed screening process was covered by layers of systemic impossibilities.

"Yellow Star, good potential with a special-grade body mutation… Avana Unson, you're qualified for the Outer Reach Program."

At the front of the line, the robotic voice instructed them to perform a series of routine checks, identifying their strengths and application viability.

'Yellow Star, I remember that…'

Enzo thought to himself, recalling some of the information he had read in the past.

After the first voyage, a Star Weaver is given a star allocation by the Weave. It not only represented one's potential, it was also a site of strength where one could connect with their avatar and allowed humans to challenge those latent powers.

The grades were as such: Yellow Star, White Star, Blue Star, and Red Star. Each indicated a higher gradient of heat, and as such, a stronger potential.

Everyone came up one after the other, testing their potentials, getting graded, and moving forward until it was the turn of the young man in front of Enzo.

"Zeke Burn, peer through the Stargazers."

The voice from the booth resounded.

The young man had bright red hair, a look of calm and coldness on his face, and a grey robe as he approached the booth.

He soon stuck his eyes into a pair of binocular holes in the wall and stayed there as it was strapped from behind.

"Reach forward with your timestamp arm."

The voice resounded again, prompting Zeke to follow its instructions.

A second later, Zeke tensed up before Enzo's eyes. A wave of shock passed through his body in the next second as Enzo watched him shake.

In the next moment, however, everything slowed down and came to a pause as Zeke seemed to get used to it.

"Hmm, as expected with that last name."

The voice sounded again as a line of text appeared on the screen on the wall.

"That's… a Blue Star? Monster," one of the other applicants on the side commented with widened eyes.

One's star grade was so much more important than it was viewed on the outside. Normally, most Weavers, even after undergoing a voyage, would only have a Yellow Star. It wasn't even seen as a potential thing at this point since it wasn't the only criterion for strength.

Unfortunately, this had created a sense of desensitization amongst the majority of Star Weavers. The reality was much different from what it seemed, however.

The truth was… the difference between someone with a Yellow Star and a White one was so much that one couldn't catch up to the other in a single lifetime.

"Zeke Burn, you qualify for the Special Grade Program."

The voice from the booth boomed, dismissing Zeke from the test.

After he left, the binoculars seemed to release a tense smoke, showing some burn circles on its lens.

"One-minute break, we need to recalibrate."

The voice from the booth announced before abruptly shutting off.

'Sigh, these guys are monsters,' Enzo couldn't help but muse.

He was sitting next to a genius without even knowing it. He could only imagine how many of them were walking around the institute itself.

"Okay, okay, next."

A minute later, the voice called forward the next applicant, which happened to be Enzo.

"Enzo Malvaran… peer into the Stargazers."

The voice sounded, prompting Enzo to move forward.

'Maximum effort.'

Enzo held tightly his right arm as he placed his eyes in front of the binoculars and his left hand into the booth.

First, he felt a feeling of warmth overcome his arm, then cold, then a bolt of shock that didn't travel far. Then a bright light shone in the binoculars, pulling Enzo through what seemed like space…

It was a strange barrage of stimulants that eventually brought Enzo in front of a familiar sight—a bright star that shone with an ominous glow of life and death.

As soon as the display appeared, the room was suddenly consumed by a deathly silence filled with confusion and shock.

All of a sudden, the booth's doors slid open, and a woman with a mechanical voice box around her neck stepped out and went straight to the screen.

"Holy fuck!! A Great Star??!!"
