Salbine city signified one end of the trip, the winter end. It would be the largest city they would have been to, Carl had also told them they would be staying there for a long time. The thing was Salbine city had large tracks of grains, grapes, wines, things that would be harvested just before they got there. The town's stockpiles would be stuffed. A good growing season meant there was a lot to buy. They also had sheep, and so wool, carpets, and various other goods for trade. What they realistically lacked was metal, which would be found at the other end of their journey.
The city was actually the town surrounding the castle, as this was also the capital of Hamlet, the nation most of their trip was going through. Royals lived there, as well as a few nobles, ones that were there for politics or lack their own lands for one reason or another. It was a sprawling city. The castle, which up upon a plateau, spires towered over the city. There were two sets of walls, one for the inner city, as the city had outgrown these walls at some point, and around the castle, garrisons and keep. The walls were ten meters thick, and had cannons lining it. There was also a moat whose water was supplied by the river that ran through parts of the outer city. The town was quaint, and seemed well kept. The population living normal lives.
The kingdom of Hamlet's power was great, even though the city-state of Dakota Springs was inside of its borders. The rest of the country was firmly in their control, Kurt was technically always a citizen of Hamlet, having never left the country, outside the other side of the gate, of course. King Patrick seemed like a competent leader for all Kurt really knew about the subject, there hadn't been a war in Kurt's life, so at least there was that.
Kurt had never seen anything as big as the city, the castle made the pillar look tiny in comparison. He had no idea that humans could build something so big and large. Seeing it in person was inspiring.
They had been joined by a caravan of sorts, since there were so many people going and going from the city, and the few gates through the wall created choke points. It was going to take some time to get through everything to wherever they were going in the city.
"Wow," said Layla, "it really puts things in perspective, you humans have so much time and dedication, you had to actually lift all of that up there too."
"Yeah," said Kurt, "it's pretty incredible."
"There are so many humans as well."
"You might want to start saying 'people', humans usually don't refer to themselves as humans."
"Yea, but, I had no idea there were so many of you, all in one place."
The wall passed above them as they entered the inner city, bringing out a massive system of roads and buildings, you could walk around for hours and never hit the same street. Kurt had been to Dakota Spring before, and always thought it was a large city, the entirety of Dakota Spring could fit inside the walls, with room to spare, and there was the other city, and the keep also.
They pulled up to a massive hotel, columns stood like massive trunks, the door was well oversized. It looked well decorated, the grounds were well maintained. This was where they were going to be staying, making agate inside one of the rooms. But Kurt might just stay on this side this time.
Inside the hotel room that also was the biggest room he's ever seen. The entire place was decked out like for some noble or something, chandeliers and all. It was far more than Kurt would have ever expected to be able to afford in two life times. The massive bed, the whole kitchen, it was like a whole apartment, compared to some of the hotels he's seen it was like night and day. City life might actually be nice.
A fruit basket was on the counter and Kurt took an apple and bit in, still fresh. The world couldn't really get any better. nice room, nice company, for the most part, and good food. What more could anyone ask for?
There were of course things to do, and get. Kurt wanted some armor, and was still waiting on the sword from the blacksmiths. He had decided the basic double edged straight sword would be best, since the Crescent Wave Slash came off the back of the blade, and the thinner it came off the better it was the most obvious choice over any single edged, or curved type blade. They said it would be done by tomorrow. He also wanted to see about some basic armor, and better shoes. There were various things he needed for more potion making as well. A lot to do and time to do it.
Salbine city seemed to never sleep as well, lights and people would be heard and seen at all hours, though by the deepest of the night it would calm down. The city's streets seem to crawl from the populace moving about it from Kurt's view in the hotel.
Sara had made her way through the gate, she didn't have to actually take these trips as Mary couldn't make gates or even go through this one. Lucky her, the carriage ride isn't bad, it's just really bumpy at times.
"Now this is living!" Sara said
"That it is."
"What a view!" she said walking towards the large windows. "It's so damn massive."
"Yeah."
"I wish the rest of them could see it."
"Ohhh? You want to invite the horde of goblins over to this side?"
"I was more thinking the gnomes give them some ideas about the Duchery."
"Of course. Why anything else."
"So let's go get a drink. Hit the town."
"Sounds like a plan."
