The Boundless Expanse(An Epic System Apocalypse LitRPG)

Chapter 660

Without looking back, he started to teleport, flashing across the sky. Each teleport took him dozens of miles, and at the speed that he could chain them, he could move far faster than he could while simply utilizing his stats alone.

The sigil grew and grew in the sky, until it looked like the titanic eye was staring directly at him through its own eyelids. At the very center of the sigil, there was a tiny rip in space. It was a deep shade of purple, and radiated an ominous energy. Sam hadn't seen it earlier, but now that he was at closer range, it was nearly impossible to miss.

The closer he got to the battlefield, the more pronounced its effects on the world around it were. The seas started to churn and froth about a thousand miles from the sigil, loops of water rising up into the sky towards the massive eye. None of them made it, but the effect created a frothing maelstrom below.

Sam sped up, moving until he could see the major players at war. On Elvras' side, most of his guards and soldiers stood, each of which was over level 230. On the Dreamers' side, thousands of lower level cultists warred, using the same illusory techniques that Sam had been privy to earlier. At their head was a woman clad in a shifting cloak of rainbow light, ever changing in its colors. The only thing visible was her face, and even that was distorted. A third eye opened in the center of her forehead, shining with the same light as the baleful icon far above. It pulsed in tandem with the larger eye. She held a twisted dagger in her left hand, dripping with blood.

The battle was centered on a gargantuan fortress, built on a mountain not unlike the one that made up the capital. However, given that most of the fight was happening in the sky, it was nothing more than a backdrop. That was until Sam saw the thousands of ritual circles wrapped around the monolith. Each of them was attached to the sigil above with threads of pinkish light. Every time one of them pulsed, the sigil grew brighter and the rift within it grew as well.

Sam gathered the disparate energies for his I Am My Vengeance skill, surrounding himself in a tripartite bulwark of armor. His hammer blazed as he used Manifestation of Vengeance at the same time. As he flew in, he looked like a meteor descending from on high, surrounded by multi-colored flame.

Elvras and the Dreamer leader paused in their battle, looking up at Sam. Just by looking at them, Sam could see who was the stronger of the two. Elvras was covered in wounds, while his opponent only had one, a wavy scar that stretched across her face, bisecting her nose.

"Sam?" Elvras bellowed. "Where were you?"

"It matters not," the cultist hissed in a nasally, annoyed voice. "The Master is coming, and nothing will stop him from taking this world as his own."

"I'll take care of her," Sam shouted down to Elvras. He had to force the words out of his mouth faster than his descent. "Go disrupt the ritual. None of this matters if the Dreamer comes through!"

Before the Dreamer cult leader could respond, Sam was already upon her. Terra's Will slammed down like the gavel of a demigod judge, but when it landed, its target wasn't there. A puff of multicolored smoke billowed out as Sam crushed an illusion. The real cult leader was already behind him.

Sam felt a small wave of power surge through him as his quest updated, but he didn't bother checking the next one. He already knew what it was. He had to defeat the cultist, or at least hold her back for long enough for Elvras to take out the rituals.

"I've seen you in the visions that the Dreamer sends me," the woman said, her voice echoing through the air. Sam tried to pinpoint her location, but it was like the sound came from all sides at once.

"Really? And what did they say?"

"That you aren't as inured towards mental attacks as you are towards physical ones."
