The Boundless Expanse(An Epic System Apocalypse LitRPG)

Chapter 659

"Climbers. Congratulations on making it this far. You are the future of your Multiverse." It smiled, its featureless face bending as a mouth appeared there. It was very disconcerting to watch. "Because of your talent, this cycle of the Tower has broken the record for Challenge Mode participants. Even more incredibly, four of you have been selected for something beyond that."

Sam and Jacob looked at one another, surprised. They weren't the only ones considered powerful enough to be beyond normal Challenge Mode.

"In the history of your Multiverse, only Altari and a few of the Creator Kings were deemed worthy of such an honor. Every single cultivator to have been granted access to the third difficulty of the Tower, and survived, has reached A Rank."

A wave of murmurs spread across the empty space. That was quite the statement to make. Most here didn't know that there was even a level beyond Challenge Mode. For that to be the secret key to A Rank? Emotions had to be running rampant.

"In any case, this Tower run has been deemed to be too easy. Perhaps one challenger on this level would have been within standard parameters, but four? No. Something needs to change."

Flashing System notifications started to pop up in the corners of Sam's vision, quickly condensing down to one. It opened without his bidding, colored an ominous red color, with black outlines.

You may choose to leave the Tower now, or continue to climb. However, if you choose to continue, there will be only an option to leave every five floors, rather than every one.

The difficulty levels of the Tower will be adjusted, with a more seamless, tiring mode of challenge being adopted. For those four of you on the highest difficulty mode, expect your quests to be dramatically shortened. There will be no breaks from now on.

Sam stared at the message, mirrored by everyone else nearby. A moment later, a ticking counter appeared next to it, counting down from sixty seconds. He had to make a decision, and fast.

Sam turned to his allies, seeing looks of steely resolve in their faces. He nodded to himself. As one, all three selected yes.

Sam winked back into existence in the Worldsea, in the small cabin that he had waited out the assassins in. Only, something was off. The air was musty, and the ground was covered in dust. It looked as if nobody had been there in weeks. An urgent, blinking System message appeared.

You have entered Floor 6 of the Worldsea(Challenge Mode).

Time has gone by while you were locked in stasis. Three weeks have passed. The Dreamer Cultists have almost achieved their goal, and without your presence to combat them, Elvras is hard pressed to defend his people. Make haste to the front lines, or all else is lost.

Sam burst out from the building, and found that the city around him was partially in ruins. High above, giant chunks of stone bobbed in the strange gravity pockets that dotted the Worldsea, having fallen off the sides of buildings near the peak of the mountain. In the distance, what had to be tens of thousands of miles away, a massive sigil floated in the sky. It was an ethereal shade of pink, and shaped like a closed eye. In its center was a shining pupil, visible even through the eyelids.

All around that point, Sam could barely make out explosions of light and color, marking a titanic battle going on in that sector of the planet. In comparison, the world around him was far more muted. People were hiding in their houses, and there weren't any invaders within sight. It looked as if the capital had been targeted in a single, devastating strike, without the majority of the Dreamer cultists' forces engaging.

Sam rose up into the sky on a pillar of his Dao, trying to get a better vantage point. As far as he could see, nothing was left of importance in the city. The real fight was taking place on the distant horizon, the fight for the world, and perhaps, for even beyond.
