Chapter 609: Trap within a Trap (Part 2)

Saleen could not afford to care about maintaining the transformation of the elements around the phoenix. He pushed Narnia into the metal barrack and he entered quickly after her before Su entered last. Su latched the door and Saleen immediately cast a spell to completely seal up the metal door.
“Narnia, use some earth-element spells!”
Saleen knew that his water-element spells would not be effective. Narnia nodded and produced yellow-colored crystallizations of the earth element to change the door into a wall without any gaps.
When this metal barrack was constructed, it was rectangular in shape and could only fit fifty people. Now that it was being used as a temporary hideout for two-hundred people, it was a tight squeeze. Narnia took out a small case. There were two wind-element magic arrays on top of it along with a low-level magic nucleus.
Even though it was powered by a low-level magic nucleus, this case was something used by Qin combat vessels to supply air. In the beginning when Qin was still studying and building submarines, they were built with plenty of this magic equipment. Without them, the crews would have perished without a sufficient air supply.
Saleen had only just entered the metal barrack when Green Dragon Stone became a sea of flames. This huge inferno burned rapidly and the sky was painted red. Even if the reinforcements from Northtown had not used any signalling flares, Northtown should have realized by now that something had cropped up.
Under the influence of divine spells, water elements would break down into even smaller components and burn rapidly at terrifying temperatures. Saleen and Narnia hid in the metal barrack nervously and cast one spell after another through the thick metal walls.
The spells cast by Saleen and Narnia were sticky traps which possessed an area effect. Once the spells had been cast, a thick layer of sticky substance formed around the metal barrack. This kind of substance was hard to burn off and was even more durable than solid ice.
All the white fog around Green Dragon Stone floated towards the room in which Saleen and the rest were hiding. They acted as fuel for the fire and the attack persisted.
The sticky trap could not last long but fortunately it was a low-level spell so Saleen and Narnia could cast it over and over again without exhausting too much mental strength or magic chords. To a grand mage, he would not even have to consider these two factors at all. Narnia had just cast a modified Phoenix spell so she was not able to help Saleen for too long.
Fellet chuckled and took over Narnia’s position. The sticky trap was a spell that he was not familiar with. Since this spell was only used to act as a buffer against the burning flames, he only needed to make sure he was in sync with Saleen.
After half an hour, the temperature within the metal room inevitably rose. If this continued, the temperature in the room would reach boiling point or even beyond. The people in the room would all become cooked like vegetables that had been put into a steamer.
This was when the men of the royal swordsmen camp finally revealed their horror. Their magic armor could certainly last for half an hour under the attack of flames. In this case, they could feel the effects even though spells had been cast to protect them from the direct impact of the flames. They began to doubt if their armor would be able to protect them.
“Don’t worry, it is just a high temperature,” Saleen tried to assure them even as he changed the spell that he was casting at the same time. In his hands appeared a sphere of green water flames. They burned cleanly and both Tornado and Snowkill appeared outside of the metal barrack.
Snowkill was a spell with an abnormally low temperature that had a freezing effect. Saleen had no intentions of using this spell to extinguish the flames. The snowflakes that were formed from the water elements floated in the air like razor and danced in the midst of the tornado. The wind elements buffered the burning of the flames, but not the lowering of temperature due to the freezing.
The sticky substance that covered the metal barrack was now quickly transforming into ice and the entire barrack had turned into a gigantic ice block.
Saleen’s only objective now was to lower the temperature within the barrack. Green Dragon Stone did not burn completely as there was still plenty of white fog everywhere. As long as no outsiders destroyed the formation of the divine spell, it could remain functional for an entire day.
Even a sorcerer would not be able to withstand an entire day of high-temperature attack.
When the red Bishop noticed the ice blocks appearing on the barrack that the mage had constructed, he immediately knew that things were not going according to plan. If this went on, more heavy-armored soldiers from north town would be sent over and he would fail to kill his original targets. His objective was to capture the envoy of Bitter Water Prefecture alive, hence he resorted to using a pressing method such as this instead of a more destructive skill.
This kind of area attack would not be fatal to a grand mage. As long as the time factor was well-controlled and the grand mage was thoroughly exhausted, he could still be captured alive. No one imagined that there would be three instead of one grand mage. Due to a godly item that he had brought along that was effective in countering spirits of the dead, the death mage was not an important consideration. Amongst the Holy See equipment, there were few that could effectively counter spirits of the dead. Without it, the death mage would have been much harder to handle.
The red Bishop realized that things might be getting out of hand. He flipped to the end of the book and began to chant a new prayer.
“To the mightiest God, there are lost souls on earth that are not able to return to the right path. They are not innocent. I seek the flame of hell to purify these heresies. Nevertheless, this goes against my religion. Your forgiveness has also made me doubtful and lost…”
This prayer was three pages long. In a battle between two people, the other party would never allow him to complete the entire prayer. In other words, this divine spell could never be used in the heat of a battle. It could only be used to control or force certain situations.
One of the regiments of Northtown has been trapped within the white fog traps. They were still charging and attacking left and right and had killed a large number of fog men. All of a sudden, the speed at which the fog men were attacking and their numbers increased tremendously. Half of the white fog in Green Dragon Stone began to transform into all sorts of creatures and attacked the soldiers of Northtown.
The creatures formed from the white fog were not shaped like humans and were of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Although all the Northtown soldiers were elite, the magic medicine that they brought along was limited and they did not have any grand mages in their group. Their spatial equipment was pathetically small so there was no way to carry more resources.
“We have been trapped! What do we do?!” shouted the officer that had been commanding the soldiers on the exterior. The amount of white fog has diminished but the number of weird creatures increased. The fight was even. The soldiers relied on the last row of crossbow arrows to hold their defence. The moment their formation was broken through, it would be even harder to defend.
The two white-robed mages went pale. They had thought that this was just a small mission where they would then receive three months’ worth of magic nuclei in exchange. They never imagined that they would be involved in a trap that they could not handle.
A grade-3 mage’s senses should already be very sharp, yet they could not pinpoint any weaknesses in this array. Typically, every array had its weaknesses. Those within the array would not be able to counter against these weaknesses, but those outside would be able to do so much more easily.
The two grade-3 mages could not even begin to understand this array, much less think of how to find its loophole.
The regiment captain heard his subordinates’ desperate pleas, but there was nothing he could do. Any magic or divine spell must have its limits. An army officer of his grade only received monthly training from experienced mages who would share with them what to expect on the battlefield.
Therefore, the captain understood that this array was beyond what his army could endure. In other words, his army would collapse first before the array could be put to a stop.
“Protect the mages. Use your heavy swords to draw straight lines on the ground. We will attempt to break through,” The captain’s voice was calm, but there was zero confidence in his heart.
The soldiers tried their best to protect the mage. Any creatures made up of the white fog that tried to get close would be attacked. The two mages did not join in the fight. Instead they prepared restorative water again and again to heal the soldiers.
“Ah!”
There was a loud but short shout. A huge white snake that was more than ten yards long bit a soldier on the waist and dragged him into the white fog. This soldier was a middle-level swordsman, which was the weakest level in the entire regiment. After battling for half an hour, he was fatigued and in a moment of carelessness, he was taken by a creature formed from the white fog. The people around him could not react in time to save him.
The soldier’s armor was the weakest in the entire regiment, but the white snake still did not manage to bite through it. After being dragged into the white fog, his nose and mouth were stuck by sticky substances, causing him to be unable to breathe or make any sounds. He became quiet very quickly and soon fell into a coma.
The soldier’s faceguard was lifted so his face torn apart very quickly and soon turned into a bloody mess.
The red Bishop witnessed all this. His expression was sullen and he bowed his head as if in a prayer. He was not a zealot and never favored using such methods to spread God’s faith. Unfortunately, the situation that he was in now did not afford him the luxury of thinking about other alternatives.
More and more Northtown soldiers were dragged into the white fog. Many of the soldiers that arrived later had all pushed up their faceguards, but the magic nuclei on their magic armor could not sustain for long. Within about ten minutes all the soldiers that had been dragged into the white fog began to find it hard to breathe. As the white fog was still able to decompose the weaker parts of the metal armor, the magic array on the armor began to be activated. By trying to seal up the armor, more magic nuclei were used up instead.
Once the magic nuclei was completely used up, the soldiers would die sooner or later.
These dead soldiers suddenly stood up again one by one. They began to behave strangely. They started to swallow the white fog around them and every time they swallowed, their bodies would swell up. The more white fog they swallowed, the bigger their bodies became.
These were not undead soldiers created from death magic. The weapons in their hands grew bigger as well. This unbelievable transformation stunned the soldiers that were still alive. They were soon surrounded by more than one-hundred giants that stood as tall as twenty yards. These giants were all once their fellow comrades.
These one-hundred giants joined in the attack. They reached out their gigantic hands and began to grab the surrounding soldiers.
