When the first rays of morning sunlight pierced through the towering, majestic snow-capped mountains standing on Dragon Island, several figures flashed by in an instant—so fast that even the world's most powerful magicians probably couldn't make them out.
"This Dragon Island is way bigger than I imagined!" Ren said as he looked at the massive mountain they'd just passed, taking in just how enormous this place was. He couldn't help but be amazed.
Sure, they called it Dragon Island, but honestly? It felt more like a huge continent than any island.
The place was absolutely massive, and it seemed to have every type of terrain you could think of: towering mountains wrapped in clouds and mist; vast, endless plains covered in lush green grass; dense forests with trees reaching up to the sky; winding rivers rushing down from the mountains; and tons of spectacular lakes, volcanoes, and snowy peaks... It was like every landscape in the world had been crammed onto this one island.
"Well, with how big dragons are, they're not exactly gonna settle for living on some tiny island, right?" the Goddess of Magic said with a smile, clearly in a great mood. "Dragons don't do 'roughing it.' Every single dragon finds the perfect spot for themselves."
"Can't argue with that." Ren shrugged, not disagreeing.
Dragons were basically the most powerful creatures in the mortal realm. They were born insanely strong, could steamroll pretty much anything, and with power like that, why would they ever settle for less?
If they really did live on just a regular island, now that would be weird!
Plus, with how huge dragons were, if they didn't have a massive 'island' like this, where would they even get enough food?
The dragons on Dragon Island actually had a pretty solid system going. Their power structure was basically made up of three parts: the Council of Elders, the Consuls, and the Tribal Assembly.
The Council of Elders was made up of the most powerful dragons—they held all the real power on the whole island.
The Consuls were the dragons they'd picked out from the second tier of power. They handled management stuff and carried out the Council's orders. Basically, they were like government workers.
As for the Tribal Assembly, that was more of an internal thing for the different dragon species...
Because of all this, the business they needed to discuss only required going to the Council of Elders and talking with the most powerful dragons. Only they could actually make decisions and get things done.
Even though Ren and the others were deliberately taking it slower, getting to the Council of Elders didn't take long at all.
Looking at the massive structure in the distance that looked like some kind of temple, Ren couldn't hide his surprise. "This is the dragon Council of Elders?"
"Nope, that's the dragon landing pad," Betty said, seeming to remember something as she laughed. "Dragons are pretty clumsy, you know? Real scatterbrained. Landing somewhere smoothly isn't exactly easy for them. So I told them they should build something like this, and if anyone lands outside of it, they'd get punished."
"...You're kind of a genius." Ren was a bit stunned. The whole image he'd built up of dragons in his mind was starting to shift a little.
But if such a huge temple-like building was just a landing pad, then where the heck was the actual Council of Elders?
Just as he was thinking about all this, suddenly a silver-white figure shot out from that 'landing pad,' flying toward them at incredible speed.
Before the white figure could get close, several more figures followed right behind it.
Oh, so the Council of Elders was inside the mountain!
As that silver-white figure got closer and faster, Ren frowned slightly and was about to use some power when he saw Betty fly out and literally hop onto the white figure's back like mounting a horse. "Little dragon, quick, go over to your master! Oh, and meet your male master too."
So this was the Totoro the Goddess of Magic created?
Ren's mouth twitched, and the dragons that had chased after it had pretty much the same expression. They clearly hadn't expected something like this to happen...
"Am I dreaming? Why is the Holy Dragon letting that human ride on its back?"
"Is that even human? That one feels like a magical creature, though those other two do look human!"
"Is that even the point?! That's the Holy Dragon we're talking about! The legendary Holy Dragon who's lived for who knows how many tens of thousands of years and teaches us dragon magic every day!"
Dragon speech echoed all around as every dragon witnessing this scene felt completely blown away.
With the Holy Dragon making a move, the dragons from the Council of Elders flew out one after another, and then... they all just froze there.
That incredibly proud, supremely high-status Holy Dragon was now acting like a kid, circling around those two beings who looked kinda human, going absolutely crazy trying to please them. And that magical creature was actually sitting on the Holy Dragon's back...
What the hell was going on?
Even if the legendary Dragon God himself showed up, he probably couldn't pull off something like this, right?
Not to mention, their dragon Dragon God never seemed to respond to them anyway, let alone actually descend in person.
What they didn't know was that the dragon race barely worshipped any gods—even the Dragon God was just something a tiny handful of dragons had imagined, not even enough to actually bring it into existence. So how could there be any response?
Suddenly, one of the ancient elder dragons seemed to remember something: "I once heard a secret passed down from my grandfather's grandfather's grandfather's grandfather... The Holy Dragon was actually a magical creature created by the Goddess of Magic, left here specifically to teach us dragons magic.
But the Holy Dragon rarely wanted to communicate with us dragons. Gradually, dragons would only ask it about dragon language magic..."
The Goddess of Magic?!
Now that they thought about it, she did look kind of like the legendary Goddess of Magic.
The dragons all became more cautious. If the Goddess of Magic really had descended, what was her purpose?
Gods descending to this world was super rare. Usually it required their churches to perform all kinds of crazy sacrifices just for the slightest chance.
As the rulers of the dragon world, they knew this all too well. Plenty of churches had tried summoning divine avatars to deal with them before, but it always came at a terrible price...
They hadn't been messing with humans lately, had they?
Could it be because of the Magic Net?
The primordial dragons and ancient dragons, though old, were still pretty sharp. Their minds quickly landed on the most recent changes.
Many dragons had started praying to the Goddess of Magic. Maybe those prayers were what drew the Goddess of Magic here? The person next to her might be the God of Technology. Were they here to spread their faith?
Having formed some theories, several of the most powerful dragons carefully approached. "Excuse me, you two... who might you be?
Our Holy Dragon seems to really like both of you. Would you perhaps like to rest in our temple? We'll prepare the dragon race's most magnificent feast and finest wine to welcome our two friends from afar."
