Percy's first shot hit the body of the first wolf, the second blasted into its skull with a spray of blood.
The wolves were black beasts with terrifying white fangs, muscles rippled under their fur as they raced across the field, hunting down the people in the caravan. Spiritmancers appeared in flashes and explosions of spirit energy.
"Let's get closer," Thalos yelled, running a bit slower to let Percy catch up.
George jumped out of his carriage, steel axe in hand, and ran to join them. Flynn screamed from behind.
"Be careful, Dad, Thalos, Percy!"
The loud howls, crashes, and dust rolled over them as they encountered the first wolves. Thalos surged ahead of them with a sudden burst, Marrowbiter flashed twice with crimson light, his body blurred, and four wolves fell to the ground.
A wolf approached from Percy's left, tearing through the dust with powerful leaps. George disappeared and appeared on his left in a flash, and his axe met the wolf.
The red-haired father of nine didn't seem that impressive when they fought a spirit, but against physical enemies he was overwhelming. The wolf's claws tried to rake over his arm, but stone armor rose from the earth and blocked the attack.
Then George's axe came down with fury, cleaving into the wolf's skull in an explosion of blood and viscera.
"Ahhhh!" George roared, his dark eyes flashing with murderous excitement. "Let's get this party going!"
Calm down, Conan's ginger brother, Percy thought to himself as he scanned the chaotic and dusty battlefield.
The caravan was bunched up on the road, they must have seen the wolves coming and tried to shield civilians. There were about twelve Spiritmancers against thirty wolves, along with a couple of armed soldiers of course.
But the protectors of the caravan were very experienced. Five of the twelve Spiritmancers fought in the frontline with the soldiers, using a combination of flashy magic and close combat. Seven people bombarded the wolves with small-scale but deadly spells.
One person in particular caught his eye, a man on top of a carriage controlling rock beasts. These golems were built like humans or lizards, they moved lightly across the rocky road, and their eyes glowed with orange light.
Earth Spiritmancy? he thought, slowing down to shoot two wolves as they ran. Too many figures scattered over the battlefield, both human and beast. He couldn't shoot haphazardly.
Instead, he looked for people that were cornered or in danger and let out non-lethal shots. And when there wasn't a risk of hitting a person, he fired a lethal shot. He was really enjoying the fast shot selection of the Spellbolt, it allowed him to shoot without thinking twice.
He tracked a wolf across the field and fired with a single click. The blue bolt of mana streaked across the road and buried itself into the wolf's skull.
That felt so good, I really thought I would miss that.
He shot two more times, keeping an eye on his surroundings as he moved forward slowly. His Fighting spirit had already been ignited, he split it between his eyes and ears. Enhancing his entire body would be weaker than just strength particular points.
But it didn't matter much because Thalos and George made sure to stick close to him and kill anything that got too close.
They were both a force to be reckoned with. Thalos was like the shadow of death, his sword cleaved through the air like a crimson scythe. He danced between two wolves, dodging one then backflipping over the second.
The moment his toes touched earth, he disappeared, decapitating the first wolf, then reversing the strike to cut off the arms of the second.
George was just as deadly, but more reckless. The earth rumbled and shifted everywhere he went, and he was the only one that had solid footing.
A wolf stumbled on the shifting earth and George struck like a viper. His axe slammed into its side and sent it flying. Another wolf jumped into the air behind him and he didn't even bother looking at it.
He stomped on the ground and a block of stone rose to cover his body. The wolf's claws and teeth slammed against the stone harmlessly. George let out a guttural roar, spinning back and ripping through the air with his axe.
The earth that had so strongly resisted the wolf's claws parted like mist in front of his axe. The blade reached through the sand and split open the wolf's belly on the other side.
The beast fell to the ground in a spray of blood, and George marched back towards Percy with a bloody smile.
He held back the urge to turn the Spellbolt on his blood-soaked psycho friend, instead shooting down another wolf.
The Earth Spiritmancer from the caravan created enough golems to finally outnumber the wolves. A stone bull slammed into a wolf with four thousand pounds of force, the sound of bones cracking filled the air as the wolf was sent flying.
A viper made of stone segments wrapped around a wolf, constricting it until it exploded like a balloon, scattering blood all over the place.
The man controlling them sat on top of the carriage almost carelessly as his beasts wreaked havoc. He wore a pure white ceremonial garb with many chains and necklace beads around his body.
A large, bowl-like cap covered his head and face. He strummed an instrument in his hand, murmuring something. Percy thought he was just creepy until he looked up. His eyes were sapphire-blue diamonds that glittered under the darkness of his hat.
There was malice in those eyes as they scanned him and the Spellbolt in his hand, but before long the man looked away.
Percy had a bad feeling but he ignored it and focused on the ending battle. He was more confused about why the wolves hadn't started running yet, they were being decimated.
Morbidly, they fought to the last wolf. The beast was wrapped up by a stone serpent and one of the normal soldiers walked forward and drove a spear into its head.
With the fight done, Percy walked towards the soldiers and Spiritmancers behind Thalos and George. Some of the soldiers' eyes lit up with recognition as they saw George and Thalos.
"Melnas! You're still alive?!" George bellowed happily. He dragged a man into a forced bear hug. "With how weak you are I didn't expect to ever see you again."
"Let go of me, you oaf!" Melnas groaned, he was a lanky man with a halberd and leather armor. Percy had seen him fight, Melnas didn't seem too bad compared to how George spoke about him.
The other soldiers bowed to Thalos while the Spiritmancers watched him, giving him a begrudging nod.
"You are Thalos Amphene? So I suppose that is your son" the man in white said, still atop the carriage. "He fights like a parasite."
