SSS-Rank Engineer: Only I Can Create Legendary Weapons

Chapter 60: 60—Spirit Affinity

Percy was able to get rid of Joey after Thalos' story. The kid didn't understand what was said, though, he was just tired. The carriages rolled on in a single line.

A small caravan of three carriages with theirs at the front to prevent dust was blinding them. It wasn't much help with the nature of the road and the fact that other caravan were on the road.

They moved early, but there was still a caravan ahead of them that they were getting closer to.

Percy raised his hand.

"Drive of the world, swift and free, Rush the gale, surge through me!"

He intentionally controlled the spirit energy he used for this spell and shaped it with his intent to not push the Ramlos carriages behind them. He had gotten pretty good with wind spells, so instead he created something to push the dust away from them.

The spell would continue for as long as he provided the spirits he was connected to spirit energy. And since he used a small amount to shape the spell, then it wouldn't take much to maintain.

"Percy, that's impressive and all, but you should be careful with using Spiritmancy like that," Thalos warned. "A lot of Spiritmancers are very… strict on how the spirits should be used."

He knew that already. There were a lot of doctrines around respecting the spirits and having good relations with them. But this was just a tiny request.

"You're right," he admitted. It was a bad idea to dismiss old knowledge, there was no smoke without fire, and people didn't say don't overuse the spirits for no reason.

"Don't stop the spell now though," Thalos interjected, enjoying the clean air. "Just keep an eye out for other caravans, they'll have Spiritmancers on them."

Thalos ignored his look of confusion and reclined into the seat. Percy sighed and turned to Flynn.

"Does your dad dislike this type of thing?"

Flynn shook her head, a little too much as she enjoyed how her curly red hair danced in the wind.

"No. I don't think he'll care much, especially if it's you, they all think you're sinless. Besides, I think only nobles care about that type of thing."

"First off, I am sinless, an absolute saint some might say," he said, ignoring how she rolled her eyes. "Secondly, I'll leave the spell up for a couple minutes. Hopefully we can pass the caravan in front of us."

Barty shook his head.

"Not possible unless they all stop and park."

"They can't travel for as long as we will," Thalos said noncommittedly. "We'll just pass them at night and stop ahead of them."

Percy nodded, and turned when Flynn started poking him. "What?"

"How many spells do you know?" she asked. "My older brothers don't know much other than one Rank 1 earth spell that makes them stronger and faster on land. My dad hasn't even taught Hack or I anything."

He didn't have enough memory to remember any of their names. He knew Xavier had already done his Spirit affinity ceremony along with two of his younger brothers a year ago.

Now Hack—only God knows why he's named that—and Flynn would have their ceremony because they were close in age. Hack was almost fourteen, waiting for Flynn to at least get close to thirteen before they went to Yarol.

His mind had gone on a long trip trying to understand the convoluted nature of how much this family would be travelling. But he managed to drag his thoughts back to Flynn's question.

"I can use two spells. A fire spell and a wind spell."

"Wow, that's so cool," she beamed, imagining herself casting. "Hack can't even see spirits yet. I can though," she said smugly.

He raised an eyebrow, unsure if that was something to be proud of. But Thalos was right there, if he tried to make fun of her, his father would scold him.

"That's so cooool," he said sarcastically, but Flynn didn't seem to catch that, turning red happily.

"Which one is harder for you to use?" she asked. "I heard that the spirit that's harder to use is the one you don't have an affinity in. I see a lot of earth spirits when I meditate so my dad said I have earth affinity."

It was interesting to see how affinities passed down between families. He was pretty sure he got his dual affinities from Hecate, but it could just be Nyx arranging his reincarnation to have him be born to someone with dual affinities so it wouldn't be suspicious.

"I don't have any problem using either. I see a lot of fire and wind spirits, so I probably have affinities in both."

Flynn turned even paler than usual, red hair looking like fire against her white face. It was very rare to have dual affinities after all. Only in the Margraviate families was it somewhat common.

"I can't even compete…"

Percy was inclined to ignore that. He didn't want to deal with her childish desire for competition. When she grew up, Flynn would learn that it didn't matter how special you were at the beginning.

In the meantime, he kept his eyes on the road and just petted her sympathetically. The dust was growing. Did the caravan ahead of them stop?

As the line of caravans came into view, they were forced to slow down. Barty stood from his seat and signalled to the driver behind him that they were stopping soon. Percy killed his spell and squinted forward.

"They're fighting," he said carelessly.

Flynn jumped forward, grabbing the divider between them and Barty, her amber eyes flashing with excitement.

"Monsters! Those are Black wolves, they're so huge!"

"What happened to the shy girl that was overshadowed by her chaotic siblings," Percy murmured to himself. In the meantime he pulled out his Spellbolt from the space at the back of the carriage and checked the Spellcore battery.

"Five bars… fully charged." He took it apart quickly and checked for that strange misalignment problem he had been having.

He turned to Thalos but he was already awake, grey eyes scanning the monsters with casual indifference.

"You ready for a fight, dad?" he asked sarcastically.

Thalos shrugged and grabbed the crimson handle of his sword, Marrowbiter.

"Stay close to me… to protect me of course," he joked back. "Wouldn't want Aella getting angry at us."

The carriage stopped, Flynn tried to say something, but Percy jumped out before she could and aimed at a wolf on top of a man. He fired twice in quick succession with a smile on his lips.
