Book 10A - The Auction - Chapter 48

We needed to move.

I looked around to orient myself, then took off down the street that would lead us to the Klix gate. "Let's go!"

Trok was right behind me with Ella hanging on to his shoulders, but Jenne was having to help Aelin walk. The shorter woman wasn't putting any weight on her right foot as she tried to follow me. Oz had taken the hand-length needles out of her hair and was using them like daggers as she fought against a Bandit. A woman in a skimpy red dress was leaking blue blood on the ground beside her. The man didn't last long before the stained needles poked holes in his arms and sides, dropping him next to the first person Oz had incapacitated.

"GO!" Oz waved at us. "WE'VE GOT THIS!"

I didn't want to leave, but the Anubis women from earlier ran up the street. They saw us and headed our way with a Minotaur behind them. At first I thought they were coming for us, but then I saw Therus and two of his men chasing them.

Oz would be like an ant trying to hold back a bear. As worked up as they were, they wouldn't even notice her biting them.

"OZ! KARA! RUN!" I couldn't put down Ren, but I wasn't going to let them throw their lives away against someone like that.

Kara was busy holding off one of the men, even though she'd dropped three so far. But there were dozens more coming down the street on her side.

I had an idea, but I didn't know how viable it was. I laid Ren on the ground as Aelin and Jenne reached me. I looked at Ella.

"How does this thing summon monsters?"

The green woman's brown eyes widened. "You can't do that...!" She shook her head. "This thing doesn't control them!"

I pointed at the street where Therus took the head off someone who got in his way. "If I can't slow him down, we're all dead!"

The older woman bit her lip. "You'd have to unblock skills."

"Do it!" I ran towards where Oz was fighting.

I took out my spellgun and started shooting. The marbles that it was firing were enough to make most people flinch, though the one that hit Therus in between his eyes bounced off his skull without even leaving a mark.

I made it to the end of the street, where Oz and Kara were both backing up. They were fighting close to each other, with Kara taking on the stronger Bandits and Oz taking on the Mundane to keep her from getting overwhelmed. The three demi-humans were helping as well, which had kept the wave of Bandits from being able to reach the other end of the block, but I could already tell that some were doubling back to go around the buildings on either side of us.

"What are you…!"

Kara's rebuke was cut off as something snapped. It felt like a part of me that I hadn't realized was missing had suddenly been reattached while at the same time a huge weight that I hadn't known I was carrying vanished.

"WAVE!" I threw out both hands as I summoned water in front of us. "FREEZE!"

My mana dipped so fast that I was light-headed, but there was a wall of ice in front of us, as well as a sheet of ice almost a foot thick down either side of the street. The few dozen Bandits all had their ankles frozen; though the higher Tier ones were easily able to break out, they still had to do something about the slick surface I'd just created.

"Let's go!" I started backing up and ran into a six-foot-tall, three-hundred-pound golden man with evil red eyes.

Therus Gammus had used a movement skill.

"Neat trick." The older man mocked me. "But that's not how you PVP." Daggers materialized out of shadows behind him. "This is how you—!"

A red bear with rabbit ears bowled into him.

The daggers vanished as he lost control of the skill, and he was buried under the Behare that was bigger than he was.

"RUN!" It was the only warning I could give as monsters began falling out of the sky.
