We went to the roof.
"What are we doing up here?" Oz hadn't put down the broken bottle yet.
"He wants us to jump." Jenne twirled the single-hole mini-knuckle daggers that she had in each hand. Her belt was now tied around her waist, and the buckle was gone, which was where I assumed she had gotten the weapon.
I thought about trying out mine, but considering my hands were full with a very drunk Ren, there wasn't a reason for me to be holding a weapon.
Kara bolted the door shut and pointed over at the glass ceiling. "Don't walk on that side."
Over half of the flat roof was nothing but glass. There wasn't a lip to keep us off of the part over the auction floor, and I was curious if the glass would hold our weight or not, but now was not the time to test it.
"That's a thirty-foot drop." Aelin peeked over the side, then pulled her head back. She lowered her voice. "And there are people down there!"
The sound of fighting was all around us, so it didn't surprise me that there were people in the street. We just needed to find a way around them. I looked at the Minotaur. "What's your plan for getting down?"
Trok looked confused. "You're Adventurers."
I almost asked him why that mattered, but remembered some of the things that I'd seen farmers do. Thirty feet would be nothing for an Adventurer. If they had their skills.
"Maybe if we didn't have to carry anyone." I nodded at Ella as I shifted Ren's weight in my arms. "How's she doing?"
"I'm…" The green woman blinked. "They tried to kill us!"
I shrugged and turned to Kara. "What can we do?"
The former Scarlet peeked over the roof, then looked at me. "I need my inventory."
This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
I kneeled in front of Ella. "Can you do that? Can you let us into our CBs?"
The older woman blinked, her eyes fixated on the dark woman in my arms. "You have to take down the whole net."
"What will that do?" Jenne walked over.
Ella didn't seem like she was going to answer, so Trok spoke. "Everyone gets access to everything. All the skills open up, inventories, everything."
I looked at the glowing ball Aelin was carrying. "We could put the core in our CB?"
Talking about the core drew the technician's attention.
"The core won't go into a CB." Ella turned to look at it. "It would just absorb the CB!"
"Okay…" I bit my lip. I'd considered using the return stones, but anything we were holding that wasn't considered equipped to us would get left behind. That meant that we couldn't bring Trok or Ella out and that the Core would stay here too.
As far as I was concerned, that wasn't an option.
Someone banged on the door, letting me know that we needed to move.
"We're going to have to jump!" I looked at Kara and nodded at Ella. "Can you?"
The ivory woman sighed and grabbed the older woman. Before Ella could protest, Kara jumped over the ledge.
"Oz! Can you get Trok?"
The raven-haired woman threw her modified weapon at the bulging door, scooped up the teen, and followed after Kara.
I looked at Aelin and Jenne. "You good?"
They both nodded, but Jenne didn't move towards the edge.
"I'm going last." She held up her hand. "Both of you are more important, and someone has to slow them down if they get through." Her green eyes glared at me. "I'm right behind you, so go!"
Aelin clutched the sphere against her as she jumped.
I held Ren tight as I ran towards the edge. The ledge was three feet high, which was just tall enough that I could easily step up onto.
The ground was farther away than I'd thought, and I hit it too fast. I squeezed the drunk woman as tight as I could as I landed on my side and we rolled. I stopped in time to see Jenne fly over the edge, the bottom of her dress flaring behind her almost like a blue tail.
I closed my eyes and tried not to think about the new bruises and pain that my suit was having to heal. I wasn't bleeding, and nothing felt broken, so I'd be fine before we got to the gate. I just needed a moment to compose myself before I opened my eyes and looked over at Ren. Once I was satisfied that the blonde was only shaken, I stood up.
"Everyone okay?" I looked at the others, which was when I realized that Kara had her sword out and was fighting against two men in sandy brown suits that weren't much lighter than their skin. Their eyes kept going to Aelin.
My heart jumped into my throat when one of them screamed. "IT'S OVER HERE!"
