As Bryson, Sable, Penny, and Eva made their way through the halls towards the captain's quarters Bryson noticed a few things. One was how interested Penny was with this sudden adventure. Second was how closely Eva was following Penny and nodding along to everything she said. Déjà vu. Bryson thought of a certain firearm-wielding medicine girl.
Though what stood out among them all was his sister. Sable was extremely quiet, walking extremely stiffly as her eyes darted around jumping at every shadow. She was practically cowering behind him.
"Sable." Bryson said.
"What? What do you see?" Sable said in a hushed whisper.
"Are you scared of ghosts?" Bryson asked looking at her over his shoulder.
"What? No." Sable said as she gripped his shoulder, "Shut up."
"Oh look I see something." Bryson lied.
"Where? I don't have my sword!" She yelled panicked using Bryson as a shield.
"I can't believe of all things that could scare you it would be an apparition." Bryson said in disbelief.
"Don't mess with me." Sable hissed.
"Relax. I can handle a ghost, no sword needed." Bryson assured her, "Also why would a sword help against a ghost?"
"It's a magic sword Bryson, of course it can kill undead." Sable hissed.
"Wait, why are we doing this?" Penny asked, "There are guards."
"I don't know if guards usually have to deal with ghosts, also I would rather make sure this problem is dealt with before we crash in my sleep. Besides I need you to guide me around this place." Bryson said.
"Okay, but how are we dealing with this? Do you know holy magic?" Penny asked.
"Sort off. Well just really one spell that's good with dealing with the supernatural." Bryson said, "By the way, why's the girl with us?"
"I go where Penny goes, I must keep her safe." Eva replied monotonously.
"What did you do to get her to follow you like that?" Bryson asked.
"It's a long story. I'll tell you later." Penny said, "But uh. Are you sure you can handle it? I have some magic that can help but, I mean if it's been stuck in that thing for that many years it probably has some wrathful power."
"I've handled worse."
"Okay, now I'm curious." Penny said.
"Long story. I won't be telling you later." Bryson said as they ran into one of the night security guards.
"Hey kids! It's night, go back to bed." The guard said.
"We will soon. Just need to check something, be back in no longer than half an hour." Bryson said.
"Uh… you still can't be out right now." The guard said hesitating a moment knowing that he was talking to the child of a noble who wasn't officially a student yet.
"I'll give you five hundred credits in the morning."
"Deal." The guard said letting them through.
"Wow, having money and power sure makes things easy." Penny whistled as they moved past him.
"It has its ups and downs." Bryson said as they made their way towards the captain's quarters. Though they made sure to avoid any more guards with a little bit of stealth magic.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
"At least it's not guarded." Sable said as they heard ominous noise coming from behind the door, "Oh no. It's got him."
"Wouldn't usually need a reason to, it's not like this is a warship." Penny said, "But uh, how do we get in now?"
"How venerated is the captain?"
"Uh, very?"
"Have any pranks or anything occurred over recent years?"
"Not that I know of." Penny said recalling her research.
"So no need for special security to deal with the magically inclined?"
"The lock is the same as any other room?"
"Yes?"
"Good." Bryson said as he flicked a hand upwards and with a bit of magic he unlocked the door from the inside with a click.
"Huh." Penny said, "You know… the thought of doing something that never crossed my mind before."
"Magic makes the simple things easier." Bryson said as he walked up to open the door, "Huh." Bryson uttered out as Captain Cuirassier was currently floating in the air with his eyes rolled back.
"Is he possessed?" Sable asked looking like she was about to faint.
"Yes." Bryson said as he saw the same magic within the body of the captain as he saw escape into the vents.
"Uh… so what do we do here? I didn't bring any gear." Penny said now also using Bryson as a shield.
"Do not worry. I am prepared." Eva said as she held out a small stuffed teddy bear.
"What's that going to do?" Sable said staring at the stuffed toy.
"Is that…?" Bryson trailed off as he noticed the magic inside the stuffed toy, it was a unique signature, "I'll need to know more about that later." He said looking at Eva who looked back at him curiously.
"But first." Bryson said as he took a step forward, clenching a fist and shimmering blue chains shot out from it and wrapped themselves around the captain.
The searing pain of the divine magic seemed to snap the ghost out of it's trance. Letting out a massive screech, it struggled in the chains to no avail. In a desperate attempt it then let out another wail. A far more powerful one that caused the air in front to ripple towards the group.
As Bryson's eyes widened and as he was about to bring out a shield to protect them he saw a teddy bear get tossed over his head and in front of him. In an instant the teddy bear ballooned in size and transformed into a monstrous real bear.
It roared back in defiance as it absorbed the impact of the sound waves. As the vibrations caused the creature's body to ripple and shake it was being pushed backwards. Eva concentrated for a moment and the bear seemed to gain newfound strength and managed to stop the pushback.
"Hurry." Eva said as Bryson unleashed the power from his chains. The ghostly screams changed to regular cries as a loud searing noise could be heard and the room was temporarily blinded with white and blue light.
After a moment the light vanished Captain Cuirassier went limp in the chains and the screams ceased. As Bryson released the chains and allowed the captain to gently drop to the ground Eva recalled the massive bear.
Bryson watched with interest as the bear shrank back down to a doll form and floated itself back into the waiting arms of Eva. That's a neat trick. A unique take on the item animation spell. I should take that in mind. Bryson said as he quickly glanced at Eva.
"So… is it over?" Sable asked poking her head from behind Bryson.
"Were, were you hiding behind me with your eyes shut the whole time?" Bryson said in disbelief.
"That's not important, is the captain alright?" Sable said quickly changing the subject.
"Oh, let me check." Penny said as she carefully walked over and checked on him, "He's breathing fine. Looks like he just fell back to bed."
"Good, put him back in bed and let's get out of here." Bryson said with a grunt.
"Really? Are we not going to wake up that captain?" Penny asked looking surprised.
"Why would we?"
"To get credit for saving him?"
"I would rather go back to bed than spending more time staying awake due to this ridiculous ghost fiasco." Bryson said as he glanced at Sable, "Though I did get some useful information."
"Oh shut up." Sable growled, her apprehension completely vanishing and the Sable Bryson recognized returned.
Bryson said nothing but flashed an evil grin as he left the captain's quarters, "Come on you two." Bryson said, "Unless you want to take the credit. If you do, don't get me involved."
Penny looked over to the now snoring captain that Eva helped place back onto the bed and pondered for a moment, "Nah. Wait up." She said as Eva followed behind her.
"I have to say this feels a bit anticlimactic. Not that I'm complaining of the final result." Penny said.
"You sound disappointed." Sable said.
"Well, you would think fighting a ghost over control of the ship would cause a bit of a stir. You made it look quite easy." Penny complimented.
"I've dealt with similar." Bryson said. Demons make ghosts seem rather easy. He thought.
"So what about the necklace then?" Penny asked.
"You keep it."
"Really? But isn't this the captain's?"
"I doubt it will be missed."
"I can't believe I wasted my time following you." Sable said, "Next time, I'm staying in bed to avoid this idiocy."
"Feel free. Now I'm going off to bed don't bother me until I officially become a student now." He said as he waved goodbye to the others. Though a nagging thought was in the back of his mind. Who and how did someone get the necklace? If I wasn't here and didn't know how to use those chains then there could have been a serious issue. Looks like it's going to be a busy semester already.
