Hero or Villain, Both

Chapter 296: The best spy

There were five generals that came with me, so they split up into three separate groups.

There were two groups that would be heading out with troops to clear the surrounding areas of the demons. The last group would be in charge of securing the areas that they cleared so that we could reclaim the land.

As for the group that I was assigned to, it wasn't any of these three groups.

"You're the only one that we can trust with this important mission."

As for the important mission, it was to guard this camp at the back of the battlefield.

This was the camp that had been established on the border.

Basically, they were keeping me from any of the fighting.

Though it wasn't as if they were wrong about this place being an important place. After all, this was the center of our supply line and if something were to happen to this camp, then there was no doubt that we would be in trouble.

So that was why they had left some of their more powerful soldiers here as well.

Still, this wasn't the reason that they wanted me to stay in this camp.

They simply didn't want to give me a chance to do anything.

They wanted to seize all of the battle glory for themselves, which was why they wanted me to stay in this place.

"Alright, it's not a problem. Go and take care of what you need to do."

The generals all looked at me with surprised and confused looks when they heard this.

After all, they just couldn't believe that I was this accommodating to them.

It really seemed like I was trying to trick them or something with how I was going along with everything that they were saying, but it wasn't as if they could prove anything. The only thing that they could do was look at me with a strange look as they tried to figure out what I was up to.

But I didn't give them any signs at all.

So in the end, they had no choice but to accept what I was saying and push forward on their own.

Though what they did do was send some of their loyal soldiers to 'protect' me.

Though it was said that they were protecting me, what they were really doing was watching over me. They wanted to make sure that I didn't do anything that they didn't want me to do.

I didn't say anything as I just watched them leave the camp.

"Are you really sure that you don't want to do anything?" Amy couldn't help asking me with a strange look on her face.

The way that she and the rest of my party looked at me was as if they were meeting me for the first time. However, I didn't blame them since I was indeed acting differently compared to usual.

I just wasn't doing anything because I actually had a plan.

"Just wait for a bit, then it'll be our turn."

They looked even more confused when they heard this, but I didn't say anything else to them as I focused on something else.

I was using my shared senses to watch over something far away from here.

"So that's where they're planning to attack. Then that means the one that will be hit first is the left." I thought to myself when I saw their plan.

It certainly was useful to have a spy among the demons, one that they would never discover.

After all, no one would have suspected that the demon king was my spy.

Since the battle last time, Val Zahar's fame had soared and he had gained access to quite a bit of intelligence. That included the trap that they had left behind in this Deter Kingdom.

The demons naturally knew that it was impossible for them to hold this place since it was too close to the human territory. Unless they mobilized a majority of their troops, then they wouldn't be able to hold it.

So there was no point in trying to hold this if they couldn't hold it.

That was why they had set up a trap here for the human troops that would come to reclaim it.

I was just waiting for them to spring that trap so I could make my move.

"Alright, it's time to go." I said all of a sudden.

Amy, Andrea, and the rest were all caught off guard when they heard this, but it didn't take them long to come back to their senses. Since I had told them that we would have a chance later, they had been prepared to move the entire time.

It was just that my words had come too suddenly for them to react in time.

I didn't care that they were caught off guard like this as I turned to Andrea to say, "We'll have to move those knights or else the soldiers won't let us go."

Then turning to Amy, I said, "Gather all the people that we've contacted previously and tell them that it's time for us to move."

They didn't waste any time at all when I gave them orders like this, but there were certainly confused looks on their faces. They just couldn't understand what was happening that we needed to rush like this.

"Please wait, you're not allowed to…"

"Allowed to what?" I asked while standing with the knights behind me.

When the soldiers saw these knights, they couldn't help being taken aback.

These were elite knights of the royal guards and were much stronger than them. Even if they wanted to stop me, it wasn't as if they would be able to do so with these knights by my side.

"Are you disobeying military command?" The leader of the soldiers asked through gritted teeth.

"If you don't follow what I say, then we won't have a military command to follow. Your superiors will all be dead by the end of the day."

"What?" The soldiers were all caught off guard when they heard this.
