126 - Daggat: Bloody Druids


"We leave in the morning, if all goes well." Daggat told his party, "In the meantime, everyone, take what you need from the party inventory. For a bit, you won't be able to access it."

Klaw, Anath, and Hunter started removing objects. Klaw's armor, Anath's swords, some clothes, a few potions for each, cooking equipment, and the like.

Something in the forest hummed like the groaning of a hundred trees shifting in heavy wind. He could feel something calling to him, silently screaming his name. It was close. Was it a spirit? It would have to wait.

Daggat brought up the inventory in the status void. It was mostly full. His assistant barely acknowledged him as he was reading through the path book.

"Hey, what's this?" He pulled out a broken cup, then a doll, and a bent fork. "Who's putting junk in the inventory?"

Zuss appeared in the status void. "It's not junk."

"A chipped knife, clay coin things, a single shoe, a… is this a dead rat?" Daggat threw piece after piece out of the inventory.

"Put them back!" Zuss threw the shoe back into the inventory.

"Zuss, we have limited room! We don't need stuff like this!" he lifted a broken chair from the inventory.

"Then we don't need stuff like this, then." She pulled out an empty clay bottle, one of about a dozen. It fell from her hand, but he caught it with his telekinesis.

"We DO. Where do you think I get bottles for alchemy? It serves a purpose. What purpose does the shoe have?"

"It looks neat."

"You can't even fit in it."

"I don't have to wear it."

"And the broken cup?"

"Interesting pattern in the glaze."

"Dead rat?"

"Snack."

"BENT SPOON!?"

"… it's shiny."

Daggat tugged at his ear, then sighed.

"Fine. We can keep… some of it UNLESS it clogs room for better stuff. Okay?"

Zuss rolled her eyes, "Fine."

"Not the chair, though, that takes up a lot of room."

With that out of the way, Daggat sat down to enjoy a lunch of mutton stew someone had made. He added a good helping of ale to deepen the flavor. The spirit called to him again, urgently.

So, Daggat wandered to the edge of town. He headed towards the spirit, but he wasn't ready for it yet. There were things to get done first.

He took a moment to look at one of the many webs that crisscrossed through the trees. They were practically invisible to normal sense. But to his, strength essence bled from them like mist. He plucked one with a finger and hissed. A bead of blood welled on the tip. They shouldn't have been that sharp, but peering closer, he noticed faint magic razors dancing on the web. Ivory's spell. That was how Anath had killed so many.

Using a stone, he tested the web's strength. It stretched, but wouldn't break. The silk twanged loudly as he released pressure. Then, he lit his thumb and placed it under the string. It resisted the flame for a second, then snapped. This, too, was written into his notes.

Once he was out of view of the main village, he took a deep breath.

"BOBBY!" He yelled with his enhanced vocal chords. Birds scattered. Somewhere off in the distance, something roared in return, and another creature further away still. He had to remember that the forest was still filled with monsters. But he was one of those monsters.

After some time, Daggat took another deep breath to call for the druid again, but something stopped him. A distant growling. Then he remembered what Bobby had said about the trees. How some of them had souls. Those were the largest ones, right? The ancient Titans, as they were locally known. Black bark with orange moss. Unlike the other trees, these did not bow towards the fountain… or gate, as it was apparently called.

He headed towards the nearest titan. The growling, almost pitiful yowling, grew louder.

There, resting against a twenty-foot-wide titan, was Bobby. He clutched his ribs and made a yowling scream for help. Dark blood was welling under his fingers. Daggat gasped, then drew in another breath.

"HUNTER!"

Daggat was at his side in an instant, "What the hell did this do to YOU?"

"Hunted," he said between breaths, "I knew it was… bad. To go into the village. People tell."

"Someone from the village did this?"

Bobby shook his head. A distant crash signaled Hunter's sprint towards his location.

Anath: <What's going on? Are you hurt?>

Klaw: <We're Coming.>

Daggat ignored the messages, "Just relax, buddy. Hunter is on his way, and he knows medicine. What hit you?"

"Sword… stabbed me. Then I got through tree. Tree took me here."

"How long ago?"

"Don't know. Hours. Trees called for help."

Daggat suddenly realized it wasn't a spirit that had called him. It was Bobby. Or the trees. They could have been a bit clearer!

Zuss seemed to fly through the air, climbing and sliding through shadows so quickly. She hooked a chain around a branch to halt her momentum and rolled to a stop. She had two wicket daggers drawn.

Daggat gave her a nod, "Enemy isn't here, but Bobby's-"

Her head snapped towards a tree. She threw a dagger, and it dug into a tree. Daggat thought he heard a frightened squeak, but he must have been hearing things.

"What?!" He asked, retrieving his spear from the inventory.

"I… don't know. Must have been a shadow. A goblin-shaped shadow." She said, suspiciously. She looked at the knife curiously, as though she wasn't sure why it was there.

"Here, drink this," Daggat tossed Bobby a regeneration potion.

He did so, "What is it?"

Daggat was distracted by Bobby's aura. Most folk's aura was a sort of off-white, muddy color that swirled randomly. It was solid green. He could see vines and leaves, bits of bark-like texture, and even the outlines of small critters fading in and out of his aura. As soon as he drank the potion, bits of pink swirled into his aura, then bled away. Sinking into the earth through root-like lines of Bobby's aura.

Grass and flowers began to grow and bloom, but Bobby was not healed. Was he immune to potions? More and more curiosities were added to his ever-expanding notes. But some lines were beginning to show.

"Uh, just something to quench your thirst." Daggat made a mental note to pay attention to someone's aura when they next drank a potion.

"Over here!" Someone yelled. It was Anath, climbing through the trees. A moment later, Hunter and Klaw rushed into the clearing. Bobby lifted a shaking hand to the tree.

Daggat grabbed his hand, "Whoa, whoa. Let Hunter have a look before you run off." For such a big guy, Bobby was pretty skittish.

He stepped back, allowing Hunter to work. Anath hovered over them, acting as his nurse.

Klaw stepped next to him, "What happened?"

"I don't know. He said he was hunted. Something about the villagers seeing him."

"He helped us. Whatever hurt him, we gut."

Daggat nodded, "But… who? Or what? They struck in less than a few days."

"And why? Bobby is big, but he's not exactly dangerous."

"I don't know. But Anath sliced Bobby up good, and he wasn't bothered. Whoever did it is deadly."

"You sure you don't want me to come along?"

Hunter was having Anath wrap webbing around Bobby.

"I was hoping to use the trees. They don't like too many people at once. Besides, I want you to work with Anath. I'm sure you two will have plenty of ideas on how to use that web in battle."

"Sure, should be fun."

A few minutes later, Hunter stepped back and wiped away blood on some grass. Bobby was bandaged with some cloth and web. Already, it was starting to bleed through.

"How is he?"

Hunter looked at the bandages with a grim expression, "Not good. He's lost a lot of blood. Some moss grew into the wound, which stopped him from bleeding out immediately. I left it in, with more cloth. He needs a surgeon, I think. Or regenesis."

"How long should he last?"

"I don't know. The bandages will slow it. My skills heal him faster than he can bleed out… but that won't be enough in the long run if I can't close the wounds on the inside."

Daggat growled under his breath, "Potions don't work on him. I'll… figure something out."

Zuss threw another dagger at a tree, "There! Something's around here."

"What?" Anath asked, glancing around.

Zuss tilted her head, "Hmm? I don't know. Must be stress."

Anath gave her a troubled look.

Elyndris: <Where is everyone! I can't sense very far.>

"I'll get her," Anath said, then she crawled up a tree and away.

Daggat kneeled next to Bobby, "What happened?"

He gave Daggat a spiteful look, "Going to the village was dangerous."

"I see that, but HOW?"

"Someone told. There is a quest for me."

"How did they find you?"

"I don't know. Skills. They were strong."

"What did they look like?"

"Human, or elf. They blend in, like I do. Long sword. Silent. I've seen them before."

"When?"

"Lots of times. Same clothes, but sometimes different. They wear the mark of an eclipse."

His assistant floated in, "Got it, Demon Hunters. Many hunt demons, of course, mostly adventurers. But the Demon Hunters are a mythologized group that focuses on it. From what I have read, they are assassins that work through questing altars. There are only a few offhand mentions of them through our histories, so I may be wrong. Their mark is the eclipse."

Daggat absorbed this knowledge, "How did you escape before?"

Bobby shrugged, then winced, "I went into the trees for a time. They went away."

Daggat nodded. So, Bobby was related to demons, somehow. He had suspected that. Bobby let the others flee from him. This one wouldn't get away, though. "Alright, Bobby. Look, they got you good. Do you know any way to heal yourself?"

"I was a healer. Long, long ago. Bandages soaked in honey and wine are good… fire can stop blood… Uh, cat-gut… yellow moss…"

"Alright, alright. Look, what level are you? Can you evolve?"

"Can't… use system… won't let…"

"Stay with me, come on. Keep those eyes open. Bobby, listen, Bobby… Are you a demon?"

Bobby peered at him with heavy eyes, "Hmm?"

"Are. You. A. Demon?"

"No. I don't know."

Daggat growled, then paced. His mind was racing, thinking of different ways to save him. He created a group chat for Elyndris and Alfred.

Daggat: <This is urgent. I need to know anything relevant about demons, demon hunters, and any way to heal demons. Context: I have a demon in the making bleeding in front of me, and his life must be saved. I have need of him.>

Elyndris: <There… are steps. That's all I remember. What demonling? The sasquatch?>

Alfred: <I've done what research I could. Demons are creatures that command one aspect entirely, within their perception. Elyndris is right. There are indeed steps to becoming a demon, but I do not know them. The texts refuse to show anyone how, naturally. I know that at a certain point, they change.>

Daggat: <Any idea on the first step? Any at all?>

The Assistant: <Elyndris revealed to us one aspect. The being must be infused with essence.>

Daggat tapped his forehead. If they changed, then their body would be healed, right? Assuming it was like regenesis. And if Alfred didn't know the process, there was no way a bumbling simpleton would figure it out. No offense to Bobby, of course.

The druid's aura was like concentrated essence. Was that a result of infusing his being with essence? That was at least an angle to work from.

Bobby was fading in and out of consciousness. Him sleeping was probably better, but Daggat needed answers.

"Listen, Bobby, I need you to talk to me. At some point, I think you… uh… melded your spirit with something. Trees? The forest? Tell me about it?"

Bobby nodded, "The tree showed me."

"Okay, that's progress. Which tree? Can you get me in contact? They could help you."

Bobby winced and pushed himself to his feet. Hunter moved in to lay him back down, but Bobby waved him off. Then, in one movement, he scooped Daggat up like a toddler, then fell.

The tree opened up like a curtain. Both Daggat and Bobby tumbled into a large, dark space.
