Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

125 - Daggat: The Next Mark

IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENT IN AUTHOR NOTES!

Daggat stood atop a box to better address the group in front of him. His crew and a few others.

"I," he paused for dramatic effect, "have a quest."

"Why am I here again?" Ketil asked.

Daggat pointed his rotting arm at him. He was using telekinesis to hold it in place, "Because I want to loop you in on the next few weeks, now hush. As I said, I have a quest. Some of you share this goal with me. The assassination of my previous boss, their boss, THEIR boss, and all other bosses of the head takers.

As you know, we have succeeded in slaying two of these marks. Gobma, our old boss, and Hogo. Gobmas boss. Each sort of… fell into our lap. I HIGHLY doubt that will happen a third time. We must take the initiative. Yes, Ivory?"

Ivory lowered the hand she had raised, "I don't want to dissuade you from your quest, but why? Why not just… not bother? Some adventurer is sure to do her in eventually."

Klaw stretched his claws, "'Cause they were dicks. It was pretty rough, as a gremlin. Till we controlled the place."

Zuss hissed under her breath, "And they got our brother killed because of it. Tried to kill us, too."

Ivory settled back into her spot, "Ah, revenge. I see. Carry on."

"As I was saying, I don't think Rika is going to show up like the others. We must be on the attack."

Ketil chuckled, "You're going to siege the goblins? Good luck."

Daggat smiled at him, "Ah, no. See, the thing is… Rika doesn't care about the goblins. Known fact. I very much doubt she knows who was in Hogo's party. Say, a charming whatever-I-evolve-into and their mercenaries."

"Infiltration?" Zuss asked.

"Sort of. Technically, we should be there. I also want to know more." Daggat said.

Ivory's tale stopped wagging, "I can see how you all can get in. Half of you are goblinoids. The others are beastly enough to pass as mercs. But… what about me? I was coming too, remember?"

"Glad you asked. We won't be there long, and we need to make sure we can get away if things go bad. You and Anath will be our people on the outside. Make sure nothing surprises us."

Ivory shrugged, "Sounds fun. But, if things DO go bad, I'm out of there. Not going to get myself killed. No offense."

"Yeah, yeah. I know. But happy to have you to help anyway. So, as for the immediate goals." Daggat pointed with his arm, "Elyndris, Zuss, and I are going to leave for a bit. The rest of you, stay here."

Anath made a sour face, "Do you have to swing that around? It's getting… smelly."

"I do," Daggat said.

Klaw wrinkled his nose, "She's right. Why?"

Daggat sighed, "Look, it's all connected, right? Alchemy, essence, demon stuff… that's all about self-image and expectations. System uses mana. Otherwise, our essence wouldn't affect skills. So, that means self-image has got to be a part of it, right? Ergo, I must continue to remember that I do have two arms, that way when I regenesis, I KEEP both arms. Simple."

The crew blinked at him, and Hunter spoke up, "Uh… What?"

"He's actually right. Sort of." Ivory said, "Self-image does affect regenisis. Like, someone with long hair would keep the long hair if they changed their skin to stone, but someone who was balding might just lose all their hair."

"Oh," Anath remarked. She was an example of that principle.

"That's why I have to carry around- I mean, that's why one of my TWO arms is a bit rotten. Just a bit."

A crystalline tower appeared out of nowhere with a thunderous cracking noise. It rose twenty feet in the air and jagged, sharp crystals. Everyone jumped out of the way as it crashed to the ground, shattering.

Elyndris looked embarrassed, "Eh, my bad. That wasn't supposed to cast."

Daggat jumped back onto the box, "Are you not paying attention?! This next bit involves you."

"Yes, yes, sorry. Who do we blow up next?" She asked.

"Rika!" Growled Klaw.

"Ohh… dead gods." Cursed Ketil. He had a resigned look on his face. The dwarf didn't seem to happy to be dealing with the likes of the crew.

Daggat waved his arms, "No, no. Not yet. First, we need our… spirit marks, right? Yeah, spirit marks. I wanna evolve. So, we are going to do that. Anyone know anything about them?"

Ivory stood and stretched, "I know a bit. So… there are spirit things out there, in the world. Sometimes they call to you, if you are close. They present some sort of challenge. If you can meet it, you gain the mark."

"That easy, huh?" Zuss asked.

"Not really. It's a big limiter to the monster population. Most monsters fail. The majority of sentient monsters don't bother trying." Ivory said.

Daggat grinned, "We're up for it, right girls?"

Zuss summoned a shadow dagger and tossed it. "Oh, yeah."

"Easy!" Elyndris said, "Wait. Am I a girl? Yes, of course. But… I do not have genitals."

"You're a girl," Anath said, matter-of-factly.

Hunter cleared his throat, "Are you sure you don't need me along? It sounds dangerous."

"If we succeed, then we will be healed. No worries. Besides, the folk here probably need your support for a bit longer. They like you." Not to mention, his planned method of travel didn't like too many people at once.

"Elyndris won't heal," Klaw pointed out.

"I will go through metamorphosis, that will heal me." She said, "Probably."

Ketil sniffled, "Again, why am I here?"

"Right, almost forgot." Daggat said, "When you get to Titanfell, have Alfred message me. He'll find you. I'll meet you there after. Got some stuff to do there, and I wanna show you around."

Ivory gave him a skeptical look, "How?"

Daggat chuckled, "I can be very persuasive. The trees and I have a common friend."

She looked even more confused, "What?"

Daggat shrugged, "Let me worry about me things. You worry about you things. Still want to stick around? Might have to wait a few days for us."

Her tail swished back and forth, "Daggat, you know what you're doing is incredibly… I was going to say stupid, but let's go with dangerous." She said it with a smile, as if excited.

Klaw scoffed, "We talked about it. Decided we'd give up on being careful."

"It just isn't as profitable," Elyndris added.

"I'm serious. Trying to take on Rika… facing spirits while wounded… splitting your party. All dangerous."

Zuss looked at her with a shadowy glare, "Why did you stay behind, again?"

Ivory shrugged, "Because you are all doing very dangerous things, and you'll either crash hard or become the biggest fish in this pond. I wanna watch."

Daggat cackled, "This pond? How big is the world, anyway? The books are not clear."

"I don't know. I'm just a small forest wolf. But I do know there are places in the world where Rika would be no more dangerous than a raccoon. I've heard of floating mountains and boiling oceans. Lands that are just sand for as far as you can see, and further. It's big."

Daggat had read of some of these. Deserts and essence-infused realms. But he let his imagination sweep him away. Once he was done here, in this small forest… then he would be strong enough to explore at his leisure.

"I know these lands. To the north," Ketil began, "are islands of stone and ice. There, dwarves rule from our great city, Varholm. Further, you find death. Realms of ice and evil where giants thrive and only mountain folk dare settle. Further still, you find the edge of the world. To the west is the sea, and beyond it is an entire other world. Beyond the mountains," He gestured east, "is the deserts where elves and drakyn nest. I do not know of the south, other than it is riddled with humans. Aye, the world is large."

Ivory gave him a sympathetic look, "Did you… not hear? About Varholm?"

"Pote mentioned something," he said suspiciously, "but that was goblin talk. What do you know?"

"Varholm, as well as vast stretches of land, has been destroyed."

Ketil lurched, as if struck, "How?"

"The dragon, Elyndris. She burned your city of wood, then was slain by your king."

"How do you know this?"

"Dwarven refugees have come to Brinehaven."

Every eye turned towards Elyndris. She shook herself, "I did not… choose my name," she said carefully.

Ketil looked to the north, "Impossible… I must return. Help rebuild."

"These people need you," Hunter said. His voice rumbled like an overhead storm.

"You're right. It's just… without the city, we only have our skills. Something must remain, right? It can't be gone."

Daggat jumped down from the box and sauntered over, "What was the city like?"

Ketil's eyes unfocused as he looked back into his memories, "My people were gifted a great forest, much like this one. We used its bounty to build a city. It towered taller than these trees and stretched for as far as one could see. A true wonder. The forest did not survive; its city was its legacy. Every last tree was used in its construction and no army could fell its walls."

"Unfortunately, dragons can fly," snickered Elyndris.

Ketil gave her a sharp look, "You share the name of that beast and its blood lust. It would be wise to watch your words."

Elyndris growled, took a step forward, and barked. The chirping challenge echoed off the trees, sending birds flying away in the distance. Ketil instantly had his axe in one hand and a bear-trap in another.

Daggat ran between them, "Hey, hey! No fighting. There's been enough of that."

Klaw sheathed his claws; Daggat didn't even notice him bring them out. If a fight had broken out, it would have ended bloody. Daggat was suddenly aware of just how dangerous his party could be when provoked. He couldn't help but smile.

"I need to confirm this news," Ketil growled. He marched away, cursing under his breath.

Daggat turned to Elyndris, "Hey! What was that?"

"He called me a beast. Anything less than majestic or queenly would be…" Elyndris trailed off. Ivory was giving her an appraising look.

Her eyes widened in understanding, "You ARE Elyndris, aren't you?"

Hunter leaned in, as if to protect the flame from the wind, "Ivory, she is not an evil monster. Not anymore." He whispered conspiratorially.

"You don't know that!" Elyndris snapped at Hunter. She turned back to Ivory, "Listen, wolf. The angels botched my reincarnation. It is true, my soul is the same that terrorized the realm. But I do not possess her memories. Only her knowledge, and that is fading fast. You have nothing to fear from me. Most of the time."

"Fascinating," Ivory's tale started wagging, "is that why you can talk?"

"Among other skills, yes. What do you know about my old form?"

"Not a lot. Only, she grew up here, in the Elderveil. She migrated northeast before I was born. She was the only reason the Elderveil wasn't being invaded. Of course, she died over a year ago. Oh... you're young!"

Daggat's ear twitched, "Invaded… what do you mean?"

"I sometimes forget how much you all do not know, my turn!" Ivory stepped onto the box, "At night, you see the gate, yes? The light that points up."

"You mean the fountain," said Klaw.

"Sure. Lots of names. It is a hole to hell! Or the Dreamlands. Or the Twisting Ways. Depends on your culture. That is what brings magic into this land. This is why none of you have had to deal with mana drought."

"The lack of mana in the air," Daggat added for clarity.

"Normally, places like that are sought out by powerful people. They are controlled, locked down, or closed up."

"So," Zuss asked, "Where are these strong people? Rika scare them off?"

"Hardly. I don't know. I think it has something to do with the king."

Daggat glanced to make sure his assistant was taking notes, "What's up with the king? Come to think of it, shouldn't he be dealing with Rika? They've got an army or something, right?"

"He's dead. Assassinated. Foreign soldiers are fighting in the south, but that skirmish is over. Now, his good-for-nothing son is king. So, they've been a bit busy. We are on our own."

Daggat was starting to get a broader picture of Elderveil as a whole, but he needed more understanding. Something he hoped to find in a human town.

He chuckled, "What did him in? Other sneaky humans?"

She shrugged, "There were two assassins, actually. One is on the run, the other hasn't been seen."

"Then how do you know there are two?" Klaw asked.

"The king was slain by two crossbow bolts to the chest at the same time. A coordinated strike to reduce the chance he'd get away. You'll learn all about that when I teach you to work as a team."

Hunter and Anath shared a panicked look. Elyndris let out a low chuckle.

"The hunter." Hunter groaned.
