North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 659: Waning Enthusiasm (Part 2)

Back at the office, Jimmy handed the follow-up investigation over to Mark and Julia. Yes, Julia returned to the office to resume work as well. Now that the main problem has been solved, having Mark and Julia participate in the remaining investigation is also considered gaining experience.

The investigation primarily focused on Qiu Shuixian, her personal items, especially her phone and computer, as well as an investigation of her residence. Additionally, the surveillance from the SPA club needed to be collected for evidence.

Jimmy arranged everything and plopped himself onto the couch, brewed a pot of tea to enjoy a good rest. After resting, Jimmy went to Ruiz's office, "Ruiz, let's get started on the search warrant."

Ruiz looked at Jimmy in surprise, "So soon? Didn't you say you wanted to add a few more places?"

Jimmy: "This morning, we interrogated the suspect of the kidnapping case and got the location of his superior. I found Agent Lars to assist Julia in a covert investigation at the target location, but they were discovered by the suspect and taken hostage. I had no choice but to shoot three suspects, one of whom was our target, and the other two appeared to be bodyguards. In any case, the case is almost closed."

Ruiz was speechless, "Are you guys always this efficient? It's a kidnapping case, resolved in 24 hours, interrogated in the morning, and the target was shot dead before noon?"

Ruiz: "So now the search is just for the smuggling boat?"

Jimmy nodded, "This can be considered a secondary matter. If we can handle it, we will; if not, closing the case is not a problem."

Ruiz: "Alright, you go back first. I'll look into it."

Jimmy: "Alright, it's up to your arrangement. I'll head back first."

Jimmy didn't insist further; he suddenly felt a bit weary. The additional harm caused by this case was already enough, and if he continued the investigation, who knows what else might happen.

Actually, this thought occurred when Agent Lars was shot. Based on Jimmy's previous thinking, he would definitely pursue it to the end. The kidnapping case itself wasn't the issue; Jimmy had encountered cases he didn't pursue to the very end before, but this time they kidnapped one of their own.

Now that Julia was rescued without injury or major loss, Jimmy's desire to pursue the case felt more like a personal vendetta. But allowing an outsider like Lars, who was also invited by Jimmy, to be shot in the process was disheartening, and that impulsive feeling gradually dissipated.

The shadow of Quetzalcoatl, this organization was involved in smuggling. In the US, there are many smugglers, and although they are also involved in smuggling drugs, which Jimmy despises the most, currently, he doesn't have much motivation to go after them. Perhaps he'll be more inclined to deal with them the next time he encounters them.

Watching Jimmy leave, Ruiz also picked up the phone to make calls. Since Jimmy mentioned Lars was shot, the first call was definitely going to Lars to inquire about his condition. However, nobody answered, suggesting she might be in surgery to remove bullet fragments.

After some thought, Ruiz called others to check the progress and reports of recent investigations. He's no longer just a Supervisory Special Agent in the Anti-Black Group; now he has to consider more, involving more personnel and forces. Not to mention, the Coast Guard, a super agency, is not easy to mess with, even though it's just a small division, it can still be quite troublesome.

Jimmy ordered takeout for lunch and didn't leave the office, waiting for news in this way. When they returned in the morning, the Support Team agent accompanying Lars to the hospital had already sent a message. The surgery began, and once it ended and the anesthesia wore off, Lars would respond. Finally, the news came in the afternoon.

Since the wound was relatively light this time, Agent Lars wouldn't be hospitalized for long; just one day for observation was enough. Strictly speaking, she could have left that day, but since she wasn't paying out of pocket, staying an extra day was fine.

FBI agents, of course, have insurance, and their premiums are quite high. However, they don't pay it themselves; the bureau handles it uniformly. In situations like being injured on duty, the insurance and the bureau cover the costs, just like they had for Jimmy previously.

Knowing that Agent Lars was alright, and that it wouldn't significantly impact her future life, Jimmy finally breathed a sigh of relief. The .22lr bullet indeed caused a smaller wound; Agent Lars could even return to work after a couple of days' rest. However, doing so would be too strenuous for her. With no urgent cases to handle, it's better for her to rest well.

Mark and Julia were not in the office; one was with the tech department helping to analyze surveillance videos and Qiu Shuixian's electronic devices, while Mark was following the forensics team to search Qiu Shuixian's office and home. Since there was a shooting involving an FBI agent and taking them hostage, the investigation on Qiu Shuixian was of very high priority, and several people from forensics were involved, dividing into several parts for a comprehensive investigation.

Given the capabilities of modern smartphones, retrieving information is still relatively quick. Besides checking surveillance, Julia focused heavily on the phone and computer. Being the one kidnapped, she naturally wanted to unearth more information, and saying it was for revenge also seemed reasonable.

When it was time to finish work, Mark and Julia came back to the office to compile the investigations with Jimmy. So far, there were no conclusions, and it would probably take more time. This is also the working style of Jimmy's team; if they didn't investigate together, they would compile findings either after work or the next day to see if someone else might have insights to push the case forward.

The next day, Jimmy finally received a call from Ruiz. In Ruiz's office, Jimmy received three search warrants. Ruiz, staring at Jimmy, solemnly said, "Jimmy, investigate carefully, but don't overextend."

Jimmy nodded, "I understand, only investigating the case they assisted with the kidnapping."

Ruiz: "Yes, the search warrants are only for the leaders of Quetzalcoatl's shadow organization, specifically the ones receiving transportation requests. According to George, who you captured, this time you're only targeting someone in their organization nicknamed Rattlesnake, don't do too much."

Jimmy: "Rest assured, I will arrange it. Also, this time, we need coverage for three locations, can you assign some more people?"

Ruiz: "I'll give you two teams."

Jimmy: "That's enough, Mark and Julia each lead a team; we'll investigate separately."

Ruiz waved his hand, watching Jimmy leave.

Obtaining this search warrant wasn't easy because the target was too vague. The contact person Rattlesnake, given by George, was only a nickname; he didn't know the actual name, only provided basic appearance descriptions. Obtaining a search warrant under these circumstances required not just connections but also assistance from other areas. In any case, Jimmy and his team could now take action.

Jimmy called Mark and Julia to return. This matter would progress more quickly with each leading a team. They had to investigate Rattlesnake, whose information George provided during the questioning with Agent Lars. In fact, Agent Lars's team could investigate directly as well, but given her current situation, it was inconvenient, making it the perfect excuse for Jimmy to investigate.

Jimmy: "Mark, Julia, this investigation involves direct raids on two strongholds of Quetzalcoatl's shadow and one warehouse. You must be careful; they were brazen enough to open fire on a Port Authority speedboat, and it's hard to guarantee they won't attack at their own strongholds. Ensure everyone wears bullet-proof vests and enters in a tactical formation to apprehend everyone. Identify and bring back any Latino men meeting the description, then George's team will identify them."

Mark and Julia nodded, and Jimmy waved his hand, "The Support Team members will come by later, each of you will take a team and head out. Two people are enough for me. You take care of the two strongholds; I'll handle the warehouse. OK!"
