Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 236 Feng Yi's Doubts_1

Boom! Boom! Boom!...

The tranquility of the battlefield was abruptly shattered by a barrage of cannons, a rain of bullets visually resembling a glistening meteor shower plummeted toward the ground, raising a rolling cloud of smoke against the backdrop of this desolate wasteland aflame. Death loomed over this once vibrant land, now reduced to rubble and engulfed in the roaring inferno of war.

Like a mighty ocean tide, the federal main forces displayed an unstoppable momentum as they launched their deadly assaults against the Saudi troops.

For several months Augustins had been locked in a stalemate with the Saudi generals. This was the first time either side had launched an all-out offensive. The main forces' initial push was fierce and swift—where they attacked, death ensued.

The moment the clarion call of charge sounded, with the 7797 medium fortress as the centre, Feng Yi and his troops had begun their assault on the fortress from three directions. The 020 rockets plunged against the fortress's impenetrable iron curtain, leaving it undisturbed.

Seeing this, the soldiers quickened their pace downhill. A group of brothers grumbled, shield held front, charging forward like dumplings flowing from a bamboo holder—plip-plop.

Though they had tactical plans, at that moment, nobody cared about formation or discipline. Survival was paramount and it trumped everything else. Everyone was fighting for themselves.

Under the fierce firepower of the fortress, the shielding of the federal mobile fighters changed from green to deep red, eventually turning into scrap. Their cabins either became human ovens, or their fighters would explode and die on the spot.

The wind was chilly along the river, brave soldiers marched into battle never to return. Before they could reach near the fortress, most of the mobile fighters lay fallen and could never get up. Perhaps it was time this long peaceful land found its glory through a collection of battles.

"Brothers, you're all made of real stuff. Follow the captain to eat, drink, and be merry till kingdom come," the old lieutenant muttered. As he aimed his rocket at the fortress, risking being blasted, his mecha was lifted off the ground by a close explosion.

Screech…

A brave type robot suddenly rushed forward, rolled a few times on the ground, snatched the rocket launcher, quickly adjusted its aim and fired. It got up swiftly and moved zigzagging closer to the fortress.

However, the fortress firepower was too overwhelming. Inside the trenches, the signal operators kept shouting, "Calling for artillery support at coordinates 7797, Coordinates 7797 requesting for artillery support, hello, can anyone hear, damn it, reply at once." The communicator could only hear unclear squeaky sounds on the radio, filled with women's laughter, children crying, news broadcasts, and countless disturbances you couldn't imagine.

On the other side of the radio, artillery troopers were trying hard to establish contact with their signal operator who was abruptly cut off mid-sentence by an explosion next to his trench, the young soldier's voice silenced forever…

Thank him for putting his life at risk to expose the enemy's position, his brave sacrifice paved the way for the aerial strike support that followed. Although the shelling couldn't cause significant damage to the fortress, it provided a much-needed distraction.

After one round of charge, Feng Yi was the first mobile fighter to get close to the fortress unscathed, the shield of his mecha still showed a green signal. He wasted no time and swiftly threw an electronic detonator inside the fortress. His only hope was that an attack from the inside would rout the enemy.

Boom! The ground shook violent—Feng Yi could feel the incredible destructive power of the detonator. The fortress's firepower decreased noticeably, but he was far from relieved. Apart from him and two other soldiers, everyone else had fallen.

This was war. This was the grim reality of a battlefield. The storming attack with 95% casualties was far from over because the fortress continued to pummel the fallen with its terrifying firepower.

Two soldiers next to him were either terrified or excited, their teeth were chattering. Out of the soldiers who had started the charge, only three remained. Though their teeth chattered, their hands did not. Swiftly they took out a detonator, prepared it, and threw it inside the fortress, quipping, "To hell with them. The more we blow up, the fewer there'll be."

Feng Yi was quicker. He noticed that none of the fallen soldiers was stirring, so he presumed they were all dead. With this grim thought, he frantically readied the two remaining detonators, ready to throw.

Saudi soldiers were no fools, once infiltrated, they were bound to launch an intense counter attack. Both federal soldiers would surely be killed. Hearing the ominous clicking sounds from the fortress, Feng Yi thought, "There are many of them. Both of you, run. Otherwise, you'll only be sacrificing yourselves. I'll hold them off."

Both mobile fighters looked at each other, showing no sign of fleeing. Instead, they promptly drew out their alloy combat knives. They stood silent, neither uttering a word.

This display of bravery and responsibility momentarily filled Feng Yi with guilt and conflict. Why did he have to suggest something like this at the last moment? Escape was clearly futile. Trying to move out might get them killed before they could reach half-way down the hill. Despite this, he didn't want to see these two brave soldiers die in vain. Amid his conflict, Feng Yi regretted his model's inability to protect his comrades.
