Second, Amelia. Amelia, born into the Edward family, has possessed exceptional genes since she was a child. Known for her active and logical mind and proficiency in calculation, she is entitled as the Federal Flower, however, real war does not need a commanding hero who can secure victory thousands of miles away.
The third person is… in fact, rather than saying the third person, it would be better to say the third plan. In order to prepare comprehensively for the war, the Federation has already begun to implement the elite Red Cloak project. The proposed list includes Sky Shadow, Angelina and the Haier Brothers, which are a major deterrent for the Federation.
Sky Shadow's strength is unquestionable, Angelina possesses mental attack abilities, and the Haier Brothers' seamless cooperation is not to be underestimated either. The value of their cooperation is definitely more than 1 plus 1, even surpassing the existence of Ophelia. Although Ophelia is a quasi-Red Cloak of the younger generation, her value is far less than that of the Haier Brothers.
Next in line is Apophis, following Ophelia. There are also promising candidates like Dovir and Mu Tou - the latter with his impressive marksmanship from the Wind Thunder Military Academy - on the proposed list. According to a Wind Thunder report, Mu Tou, nicknamed that way, lacks combat experience but his marksmanship is quite remarkable. This in turn has drawn the attention of the upper leadership. Apparently, Mu Tou had once been a student under Feng Yi.
Speaking of Feng Yi, Adams couldn't help but smile faintly. In truth, Adams had always been curious about Feng Yi, hence he would occasionally follow his students during his time at Wind Thunder. Who would have thought that Feng Yi would actually mold a sharpshooter out of these students? Unfortunately, this lad is disobedient and ran off to Big Macs and hasn't come back. All Adams could do was shake his head in bitter resignation.
——
The morning air in Big Macs was exceptionally fresh. Last night's battle with Shadow Rider had kept many soldiers awake until late, fortunately, the next day was a holiday, so Feng Yi cheerfully pocketed the money he won from a bet.
Two days later, the third defensive line continued to push forward. The Saudi soldiers, who had lost Jiu Ling, were no longer as spirited as before. With two armored infantry divisions, the Federal Army successfully captured two defensive lines within three days, practically advancing unimpeded.
The first defensive line extended outwards was a mountain range spanning 7,000 kilometers across the battlefield. The average altitude of the mountains was 600 meters. The rugged terrain made it easily defendable but difficult to launch an attack from within. Therefore, the advancing armored infantry divisions encountered little resistance while capturing the first defensive line.
However, after breaking through the first defensive line, continue advancing into the exterior battlefield was not an easy task. In today's emergency meeting of the battalion, fifteen people in charge, including Sergeant Major Feng Yí, were all present. As an independent regiment within an infantry division, this small unit also bears a colossal task, with responsibilities as detailed as scheduling shifts.
Now, looking at the symbols marked on the electronic map, besides considering themselves unlucky, the soldiers had no idea what to say. The distance between their unit and the other units covered by the electronic map was too far to support each other in a short time. In other words, their goal was very spaced out - destroy the medium-sized fortress deployed on defense.
The lieutenant suggested his viewpoint: they could wait for other units to gain an advantage and then encircle the fortress. Only in this way could they minimize casualties while capturing the fortress.
However, the lieutenant's personal suggestion was soon denied. The instructor's central idea was very clear - just do it. What's the big deal about risking one's life for the collective honor of the independent regiment brothers? Damn it, everyone here is willing to risk their life, so they might as well go for it.
There was a silence inside the conference tent. One of the members of the staff said, "Instructor, please tell me this is just a joke."
The instructor did not speak. The captain, however, laughed at this moment. His smile was worse than crying: "Heh heh, the battalion is just making a joke with you guys. It's the staff who's pulling our legs by giving us this task." Everyone present was no fool; it was clear who would lose if they took on this task. But there was no way around it, somebody had to take on the dirty work. In order to support the main forces' attack, a high-level order had already been given to this independent combat group – the Spearhead Company, to swallow this tough bone. They couldn't hold back the collective anymore.
The surrounding officers all wore grim expressions. Feng Yi pointed at the electronic map and said, "Captain, let's take a look at this first."
Everyone's gaze fell on the Virtual Sandbox represented on the electronic map. It showed a high-ground position which was relatively close to the fortress and thus, a prime choice for action. Even though it was downhill, making charges more rapid and forceful, it essentially amounted to a doomed charge akin to futilely throwing meatbuns at a dog - the faster you charged, the faster you died.
Feng Yi said, "Our task is to capture the fortress, in my view, this is akin to suicide. Our brothers are advanced combatants, we can't just be cannon fodder."
The captain's face was turning livid. He didn't want to shoulder this hardship, if it wasn't for the main force at the front line restraining the counterattack from the Saudi forces, the capture of the fortress would be impossible. The superiors' orders were to take several high-point fortresses to prevent the enemy from launching flanking attacks on the main force. In a few minutes, 42 platoons including this one would be collectively launching an attack, if they didn't move then, they would be completely throwing their brothers under the bus.
Everyone was frantically worried, but worrying was futile. Although Feng Yi was a strong individual fighter, the fortress's defence was even more robust. The firepower of a few 020 artillery pieces and AT missiles in the platoon could hardly pose a greater threat to the fortress. Despite being able to safeguard a handful of lives, Feng Yi was at his wit's end about this. In truth, he hadn't been well-versed in any specific tactics, but he didn't want to watch his brothers blindly sacrificing their lives.
Feng Yi thought about disguising himself as an enemy soldier, but the Mecha model didn't match and the uniforms weren't consistent. He thought about playing dead and springing a trap but the enemies were firmly entrenched in the fortress, immovable as if struck by lightning. He even contemplated the despicable method of hijacking encrypted signals using Eggy to impersonate an enemy commander and issue fake orders. But, all these would have to be executed based on the condition of being on the same frequency. It was evident the Saudis had long since completed the fortress's deployment.
Feng Yi scratched his scalp, wanting to grab his commander by the collar and ask if he considered their feelings when he was formulating the combat plan.
As he pondered, time ran out. Following the commander's order, the entire platoon of 80 soldiers rapidly boarded their mobile suits within 5 minutes, stealthily creeping to the previously calculated assault high ground within the mountains... From the sparse bushes in the mountains, heads oddly popped out, looking more like stones pressing on grave mounds. Looking down, they could see the fortress's mounted machine guns and large caliber weapons. One hit from those could result in mass death.
"Brothers, the time to test us has arrived." Came the captain's deep voice over the communicator.
At that moment, all the soldiers held their breath, waiting for the captain's order. The moment the command was given, five squads would charge together. According to the plan, casualty rates of 80-90% were considered a good outcome. If things went wrong, they could be wiped out completely.
Simultaneously, the frontline commander of the first line Armored Infantry Division was fixated on the clock. The battlefield was unusually calm, a prelude to an oncoming storm.
Inside the Command Room, Augustins intently watched the images on the Light Screen. He didn't want to give the Saudis a breather. The Big Macs battlefield had been engaged for several months, to continue dragging it out would only mean escalating casualty numbers. He decided to break the enemy line in one go. Jiu Ling's failure provided the perfect timing for the attack. To transition from defense to offense, he spent two days continuously elaborating the strategic plan.
The only thing that made Augustins hesitant was one thing – the unidentified enemy commander's identity.
At this point, only a few dozen seconds remained until the charge. The commanders of each unit were bracing themselves. With the bugle call from the main battlefield echoing through the sky, the old platoon leader roared with bloodshot eyes, "Brothers, show no mercy. Wipe out these Saudi bastards."
