Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Noticing Gu Jiao’s reaction, Duke An looked at her and said, “JiaoJiao, what’s wrong? Is there something off about this sword?”

Duke An doted on Gu Jiao deeply, and every little change in her expression fell clearly into his eyes.

Gu Jiao did not know for a moment how she should explain.

Duke An understood his beloved daughter far too well; she would yield to gentleness but not to force. With a face full of worry, he said, “JiaoJiao, if something is troubling you, you must tell Father, you must not hide it from me, otherwise I will be worried.”

An adoptive father was also a father.

On the day of her great marriage, he had called himself so, and Gu Jiao had not thought much of it.

His tone was so soft, it was nearly impossible to resist.

But how should she even begin speaking of this?

Just as Gu Jiao was weighing her words, Xiao Heng and Xuanyuan Qi came over.

The moment the two entered the room, they sensed that the atmosphere was not quite right.

“Father, JiaoJiao.” Xiao Heng greeted them, then asked, “Did something happen? The expressions on your faces look rather strange.”

Duke An turned to look at Gu Jiao, as though waiting for her answer.

Gu Jiao let out a helpless sigh. “Alright then. Steward Zheng, please take everyone else out for now.”

“Understood!” Steward Zheng led the servants in the room away.

The few of them sat down around the Eight Immortals table. On Gu Jiao’s left was Duke An, on her right was Xuanyuan Qi, and across from her sat Xiao Heng.

“Speak.” Duke An said.

“I once had a dream.” Gu Jiao spoke of the dream in which she had died beneath this very sword.

“It was only a dream, JiaoJiao, you need not take it seriously.” Duke An comforted her, though it was uncertain whether he was comforting Gu Jiao or himself.

Xuanyuan Qi’s expression, however, grew solemn, and he remained silent.

“What else did you dream of?” Xiao Heng asked.

Gu Jiao thought for a moment, then spoke truthfully. “I dreamed that the State of Yan went to war with the States of Liang and Jin, and the Xuanyuan army, along with many others, died at the hands of Chu Feipeng and Gongsun Yu.”

She had died, Jing Kong had died, everyone had died.

At last, Xiao Heng understood why she had insisted on personally leading the Black Wind Cavalry into battle. She wished to rewrite everyone’s fate.

And indeed, she truly had.

She had killed Gongsun Yu with her own hands; she had turned the wheel of destiny.

It was his JiaoJiao…

Such a good JiaoJiao, how incredibly fortunate was he to be able to marry her?

His heart ached, yet he was also deeply moved. Holding her hand, he said softly, “Gongsun Yu is already dead, and Chu Feipeng has been crippled. Everything in your dream will never happen again.”

“Mm.” Gu Jiao nodded.

Suddenly, Xuanyuan Qi spoke. “That swordsman, is he dead?”

Duke An turned toward him. “It was only a dream. How can you take it so seriously?”

As for those battlefield dreams, in his view, they could simply be explained as pre-battle nerves.

Xiao Heng also glanced at Xuanyuan Qi with some surprise. From Xuanyuan Qi’s tone, it seemed he, too, believed there was some special significance in Gu Jiao’s dream.

Could it be that Xuanyuan Qi… knew something?

Gu Jiao, however, was absorbed in her thoughts about that sword and had no mental space left to dwell on Xuanyuan Qi’s reaction.

She shook her head blankly. “I don’t know who that swordsman is, so I can’t be sure whether he is dead or not.”

In this war, many had already perished. Perhaps that swordsman was among them, perhaps not.

Moreover, the battle of Pucheng had come nine years earlier than in her dream; in other words, it was only nine years later that she had met that swordsman. Right now, that swordsman might very well still be just a child.

Perhaps nine years later, he would not even become a swordsman at all.

Surely not everyone would be like Gongsun Yu’s four subordinates, who had already become malignant tumors of the land at such an early age.

“Better safe than sorry.” Since this concerned Gu Jiao, Xuanyuan Qi was unwilling to show even the slightest negligence. He asked again, “That swordsman, was he from the State of Jin, or from the State of Liang?”

Gu Jiao shook her head. “I’m not sure either.”

She knew nothing at all about the other party; she had been pierced through the heart from behind with a single sword strike.

If not for the dream granting her an extra perspective, she would not even have known what kind of mask the other person had been wearing.

“Can you draw that mask?” Xiao Heng asked.

“I can try.” Gu Jiao said.

Xiao Heng went to fetch paper and brush, but since Gu Jiao wasn’t very skilled at brush painting, she used a charcoal pencil to sketch instead.

When she finished, she felt rather satisfied with the result.

“Something like this.”

She placed the drawing on the table.

The three of them stared together at the mask with fanged tusks in the sketch, yet none of them could imagine what origin it might have.

“And this sword as well.” Xuanyuan Qi said. “Later, write a letter to the Imperial Advisor and ask about the origins of the sword.”

Duke An nodded. “Alright.”

Gu Jiao paused for a moment, then said, “About this sword, I suddenly remembered someone. Perhaps there’s no need to ask the Imperial Advisor; if we ask that person, it might be enough!”

……

After the newlyweds had left, Duke An sat in his wheelchair and turned to look at Xuanyuan Qi, who was sunk in thought, and voiced the doubt in his heart. “You truly seem to believe in JiaoJiao’s nightmare.”

Xuanyuan Qi said, “She is able to see… in her dreams.”

Duke An was stunned.

Xuanyuan Qi went on, “She has always been rewriting everyone’s fate. Now, it is time for someone… to rewrite hers.”

It would be best if that assassin were already dead; but if he was not, then Xuanyuan Qi would personally find him and kill him!

In the capital, the weather during the sixth month was stiflingly hot.

A master and servant walked listlessly down the bustling street, while vendors pushing carts passed by them from time to time, nearly colliding into them.

“Watch where you’re going! How do you walk like that!”

The gray-clad bodyguard stepped aside, shielding his young master with his own body.

The scolded vendor, seeing the sword at the guard’s waist, dared not argue though he was furious; he only rolled his eyes and left.

“Young master, young master, how much longer must we stay in the State of Zhao? That monk just won’t confess anything. We can’t beat him, we can’t persuade him, surely we can’t just——”

The gray-clad guard was still speaking when he noticed no sound behind him. Turning around, he was startled. “Young master? Where have you gone!”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue had been sacked.

Gu Jiao dragged the little sack with effort into a side alley.

There, the carriage of Marquis Xuanping Estate had long been waiting.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
