Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Before Gu Jiao removed the veil, Gu Jinyu’s face could still be looked upon; but once the veil was gone, in an instant, Gu Jinyu’s beauty was completely overshadowed.

It was as if all the light in the world had gathered upon Gu Jiao’s face.

Gu Jinyu withered away utterly!

“No… no… it’s not like this… you’re not my sister… you’re not! You’re not!”

“Enough! Stop spouting nonsense!” Third Young Master Quan could no longer endure it. With everyone pointing and whispering, he felt utterly humiliated. He had married such a senseless woman, how would he ever have the face to go out in public again!

He ground his teeth, glared at Gu Jinyu, then cupped his hands to Xiao Heng and said, “Brother-in-law…”

Xiao Heng replied coolly, “Don’t call me brother-in-law. We are not familiar.”

With that, he took Gu Jiao’s hand and led her into the Duke Estate.

The rest of the crowd remained steeped in the astonishment brought by Gu Jiao’s beauty, unable to recover for a long while.

Who in the world had spread the damned rumor that the Little Marquis had married an ugly wife?

That person must have deliberately tried to ruin the couple’s reputation!

If they had truly seen her with their own eyes, then they must have been blind! And if they had not seen her but still spread such talk, then they were nothing but vile! Both stupid and vile!

“It was her! Last time it was her too!”

“Yes, yes! She came to the Duke Estate’s gates to make trouble, speaking in that sinister, mocking tone! She was scolded miserably by the Duke Estate’s steward!”

“Even Old Marquis Ding’an ignored her! He even told her not to call him grandfather!”

“How could the Marquis Changping Estate ever have taken such a woman into their family?”

Voices of scorn against Gu Jinyu rose up from the crowd.

Third Young Master Quan felt as though his shame had reached his ancestors’ graves. He wished he could crawl into the ground and vanish. “This is all your doing!”

With that, the last trace of pity in his eyes vanished. He cast Gu Jinyu one final look of disgust, flicked his sleeve, and left in his carriage!

Chunliu hurriedly chased after him. “Guye! Guye! My young miss hasn’t gotten into the carriage yet!”

On the very day of her return to her maiden home, Gu Jinyu was abandoned by her newlywed husband on the street.

What was truly despairing, however, was that even the last shred of superiority she held over Gu Jiao was gone.

She had lost, completely and utterly.

But in truth, she had never lost.

Because Gu Jiao had never once competed with her.

……

Steward Zheng had just been tinkering in the rear courtyard with Duke An’s new wheelchair. By the time he heard the commotion and rushed forward, eager to show his skills, the battle was already over.

“Ahhh!”

He stomped his foot in regret!

It felt like he had missed out on a fortune worth millions!

In the back courtyard, Duke An was teaching Xuanyuan Qi how to play chess.

Because Liao Chen was being hunted by Taoist Qingfeng and could not take his father around the capital, Xuanyuan Qi had no choice but to stay in the estate and keep Duke An company.

“You could place your piece here with this move…”

Just as Duke An finished speaking, the chess piece in Xuanyuan Qi’s hand fell onto the board with a sharp *pa* sound.

“What are you…” He looked at Xuanyuan Qi, then followed the direction of his horrified gaze toward the entrance of the garden.

There, a young girl in a long azure dress, slender and graceful, walked hand in hand with Xiao Heng. Together, they looked as though they had stepped out from beneath the Stone of Three Lifetimes, a pair destined for one another.

They suited each other so perfectly it seemed as if they had been born solely for one another in this life.

But of course, what drew the attention of Xuanyuan Qi and Duke An was not this scene itself; it was Gu Jiao’s face.

No veil. No birthmark.

She had regained her beauty.

Gu Jiao came to Duke An’s side, leaned down, and brought her face close to his, smiling like a mischievous child, “Surprised? Is it unexpected?”

Duke An raised a hand and stroked her cheek. “Surprised. Far too surprised.”

Xuanyuan Qi looked at this childlike Gu Jiao, and a trace of emotion flickered in his eyes.

More than her beauty, it was the change in her temperament that truly moved him.

Elder brother, if you were still alive and could see her as she is now, you would surely be comforted, wouldn’t you?

Neither Duke An nor Xuanyuan Qi knew anything about the matter of the gecko cinnabar, but now that they understood, they truly had no words.

This blunder… was far too great!

Xuanyuan Qi secretly added “beat up the temple abbot” to his list of future plans.

Xiao Heng took Duke An’s place and continued to teach Xuanyuan Qi how to play chess.

Meanwhile, father and daughter went to the courtyard to open the gifts. Each return-home gift had been carefully chosen by Xiao Heng, and to show his regard for his son-in-law, Duke An insisted on personally inspecting every single one.

After looking through them, he had someone bring over a large chest.

“What is this?” Gu Jiao asked.

Sitting in his wheelchair, Duke An smiled and said, “The Imperial Advisor had this sent over, saying it was the wedding gift he promised you.”

Gu Jiao immediately recalled it. “Ah, the weapons from the State of Jin’s tribute! Such a big chest, are all of these for me?”

Duke An was amused by her eager expression. “There are two more chests.”

“They’re here! They’re here!” Steward Zheng directed the servants as they brought in two more large chests of weapons and opened the lids.

Gu Jiao began carefully selecting through them.

This time, the State of Jin had spared no expense. The tribute consisted entirely of top-quality items.

Suddenly, Gu Jiao’s gaze fell upon a narrow, elongated peachwood box.

“Young miss wishes to see this one?” Steward Zheng, quick as ever, hurried over, opened the peachwood box, and presented it to her with both hands.

Inside lay a peacock-feather-patterned longsword of darksteel, gleaming with a chilling light.

The moment Gu Jiao saw it, a strange feeling stirred in the depths of her heart.

She picked up the sword and examined it closely, drawing it from its sheath. The cold gleam reflected in her eyes, and suddenly, an image flashed across her mind.

“This… it’s this one?”

In that war-torn dream where she had seen her own ending, she had died beneath this very sword.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
