Gu Jiao and the Black Wind King traveled through the darkness of night and arrived at Quyang City just before dawn.
The city was in the midst of post-war reconstruction, and the streets were already filled with civilians who had come to help with the rebuilding efforts.
Everyone had long since recognized the young commander in red battle robes and black iron armor, and as she entered the city, they respectfully greeted her from all directions.
When Gu Jiao had first arrived in Quyang City, the people had regarded her and the Black Wind Cavalry as traitors and avoided them like the plague, but now, their opinion of her had changed significantly.
Gu Jiao was pressed for time and didn’t linger; she gave a brief nod of acknowledgment before urging her horse forward and galloping away.
“Did the young commander just return from another battle?”
“He’s covered in blood... could he be wounded?”
“How pitiful…”
The townspeople couldn’t help but feel sorry for Gu Jiao.
One of the city guards stepped forward to dispel the rumors, “Commander Xiao is fine! That blood belongs to the enemy. Don’t worry, Commander Xiao’s martial skills are unparalleled. He’ll surely survive every battle safely!”
That statement was a bit exaggerated.
However, in the aftermath of war, when everything was in need of rebuilding, a strong belief in their own strength was precisely what people needed to carry on.
Upon hearing that the young commander was unharmed, the civilians breathed a collective sigh of relief and returned to their tasks with renewed energy, their morale slightly higher than before.
Xuanyuan Qi had been placed in the infirmary camp of the Black Wind Cavalry, where Ye Qing had been keeping watch by his side, never once leaving or even removing his outer robe.
When Gu Jiao dismounted and approached the tent, Ye Qing had just stepped out with a bundle of used gauze in his hands.
As the tent flap lifted, Ye Qing immediately saw Gu Jiao walking toward him.
At that moment, the stars and moon had already faded, and the sun had yet to rise, casting the sky in a hazy shade of deep gray.
Her fiery red battle garments, under the not-quite-light sky, stood out like a blaze of striking beauty.
She pushed up the visor of her helmet, revealing a youthful and tender face beneath.
Just from looking at that face, it would be hard for anyone to associate her with the fearsome commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, who had slaughtered enemies as easily as breathing.
No matter how many people she had killed or how many battles she had fought, her eyes always retained a clarity as pure as the first snow.
And of course, a calmness that was equally unwavering.
Ye Qing snapped out of his daze and greeted her, “You’re back? I heard you took the fight into the State of Jin. How did it go?”
Gu Jiao replied, “When I left, we were attacking Xicheng.”
She didn’t elaborate on how the battle had gone, but the fact that she was able to leave the front lines and come here meant that the situation was under control.
Ye Qing placed the used gauze into a special basket nearby and turned back to Gu Jiao, asking, “Did you come to see the Grand General?”
Gu Jiao nodded. “How is he doing?”
Ye Qing’s expression turned complicated as he let out a heavy sigh. “As you know, anyone who ingests the purple herb poison will either wake within twelve hours or never wake at all. If they don’t wake by then... it means they’re truly gone. It’s just that, because of the unique properties of the purple herb, the body won’t decay for months, so on the surface, it might look…”
Gu Jiao’s brow furrowed. “You mean to say he hasn’t woken up at all?”
Ye Qing turned his back to her, unable to bear the look in her eyes. “You should go see for yourself. I… did everything I could.”
A heavy feeling settled in Gu Jiao’s chest as she swiftly lifted the tent flap!
Only to see Xuanyuan Qi sitting up on the bed, one arm in a sling around his neck, the other holding up a giant frozen pear, which he was in the middle of stuffing into his mouth.
He was taking impressively large bites.
Gu Jiao’s sudden entrance caught him mid-bite, and the sight froze her in place.
He also paused.
They stared at each other. He stared straight at Gu Jiao, and under her utterly shocked gaze, he silently, slowly, completed that single bite.
Crunch!
Crack!
So crisp!
Gu Jiao: “……!!”
Gu Jiao took a deep breath, turned around, and stormed out of the tent!
Beside the Black Wind King, Ye Qing was clutching his stomach, laughing so hard for the first time in his life that he couldn’t even straighten his back.
Gu Jiao rotated her wrist, speaking in a dangerous tone, “Is pulling a prank that satisfying?”
Ye Qing normally wasn’t the type to joke around. He was a serious man. Even he didn’t know what came over him today, he just suddenly had the urge to tease Gu Jiao a little.
Gu Jiao decided that she was going to put Ye Qing in a sack.
However, Ye Qing must have checked the divination almanac before leaving the house today, because his luck was extraordinarily good. Just as Gu Jiao was about to go fetch her sack, Marquis Xuanping arrived.
Marquis Xuanping had come specifically to see Gu Jiao.
He wanted to know if Gu Jiao had any way to neutralize the poison in Shangguan Qing.
Gu Jiao shot Ye Qing a fiercely intimidating glare, as if to say: You just wait, I’ll sack you next time!
“Hold on, let me check on Xuanyuan Qi first.” Gu Jiao said to Marquis Xuanping before stepping back into the tent once more.
Xuanyuan Qi had already finished the frozen pear and fallen asleep; this was one of the early side effects of the purple herb poison——extreme drowsiness.
Gu Jiao examined Xuanyuan Qi thoroughly and found that his internal injuries were significantly lighter than before, and the previously ruptured meridians were slowly knitting back together. This meant that the purple herb poison was gradually repairing his body.
This was the first time Gu Jiao had truly witnessed the miraculous effects of the purple herb poison.
Gu Changqing didn’t count, as his dose of the poison had expired, and any recovery he experienced was purely the result of psychological suggestion. He still firmly believed that he had become a death warrior.
Gu Jiao was truly astonished, “Even his old, chronic injuries are being repaired…”
That meant once Xuanyuan Qi fully recovered, he would no longer suffer from the torment of internal damage.
He would be like a normal person again, possibly even stronger than one.
He had truly been reborn.
Gu Jiao felt genuinely happy for Xuanyuan Qi.
In light of the fact that this bottle of medicine had come from Ye Qing, Gu Jiao decided that when she eventually sacked him, she would go a little easy on the beating.
As dawn approached, Advisor Hu was so overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing his Lordship return that his eyes brimmed with tears. He quickly fussed over him with concern and rushed to the kitchen to bring back breakfast.
Gu Jiao, Marquis Xuanping, and Ye Qing all headed to the commander’s tent together.
Though Gu Jiao had been away for several days, Advisor Hu had meticulously kept the place clean, so the tent was neat and tidy.
The three of them sat around the small table, settling onto cushions on the ground.
Breakfast was millet porridge and steamed buns.
They finished their meal quickly.
Afterwards, Marquis Xuanping brought up Shangguan Qing’s condition. “...I’ve heard he doesn’t have much time left.”
As he spoke, he glanced at Ye Qing beside him. “That’s what your people at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall said.”

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
