Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The city gate had cracked open slightly, and a squad of State of Jin’s death warriors burst out.
These elite soldiers were far more formidable than regular troops; they were well-trained and lethal. For a while, many of Yan soldiers fell to their blades.
Gu Jiao temporarily abandoned the ladder assault plan and rushed forward to slay the death warrior squad personally.
“They’re even tougher than the death warriors of the State of Liang. No wonder the Jin’s imperial court dares to act so bold with the Sword Lodge backing them!”
Gu Jiao went all out in the fight.
Her red-tasseled spear was still pinning Gongsun Yu to the top of the city wall; the weapon she wielded at the moment was a silver spear brought out from Ghost Mountain which was also durable, solid, and deadly.
But the enemy numbers were overwhelming, and before long, she was completely surrounded.
She thrust her spear forward and killed the death warrior in front of her, only to feel a chill at her back; another death warrior had raised his blade, aiming to slash at her legs!
There was no armor protecting that part of her body!
Whoosh!
An arrow struck the attacking death warrior square in the chest, letting out a miserable cry before collapsing, lifeless.
Gu Jiao turned to look.
Tang Yueshan had already drawn another arrow, standing tall atop a war chariot and commanding the highest vantage point below the city wall.
The State of Zhao’s Supreme Commander radiated with overwhelming presence. In a cold, piercing voice, he said, “Leave them to me!”
Gu Jiao gave a nod, and without hesitation, she entrusted her back to Tang Yueshan.
Tang Yueshan never missed a shot.
With his cover fire, Gu Jiao swiftly eliminated the rest of the death warriors.
At that moment, Old Marquis charged in from the rear.
Tang Yueshan raised an eyebrow with unrestrained arrogance and called out, “Old Gu, you’re late! We already killed them all!”
We.
That was shameless, blatant show-off.
Look at your granddaughter, she’s not close to you at all! She’s more like my brother-in-arms!
Such perfect coordination we have!
Old Marquis’s face darkened noticeably.
At this moment, Tang Yueshan, who had slaughtered so many death warriors, finally drew the attention of the Jin army. As he attempted to climb the siege ladder onto the city wall, the enemy launched their stone-throwing siege chariot straight at him!
The siege ladder was instantly smashed to pieces!
Tang Yueshan plummeted from the sky, his family’s heirloom Tang bow flying from his back.
But it didn’t end there. A Jin archer had already taken aim, drawing his bow with deadly intent at Tang Yueshan.
Old Marquis prepared to use qinggong technique to save him.
At that moment, Tang Yueshan began yelling at the top of his lungs, “My bow! My bow! Save my bow!”
Old Marquis staggered midair, nearly choking on his own breath!
Fatty Tang! What’s more important—you, or your bow?!
But in truth, even if he had caught Tang Yueshan, it wouldn’t have helped, as the archer’s strike was impossible to evade.
At that critical moment, Gu Jiao suddenly grabbed an arrow she had yanked from a dead soldier’s body, stepped onto a war chariot, and leapt high into the air.
Old Marquis glanced at her, then launched himself up and landed just beneath her feet.
Gu Jiao stepped on Old Marquis’s shoulder and used him as a springboard to shoot higher into the air.
With one hand, she snatched the falling Tang Bow, and with the other, she notched the arrow and pulled the bowstring tight, then loosed a shot that pierced the Jin archer’s chest straight through!
She didn’t know qinggong, and as she fell rapidly, there was not a hint of panic on her face.
Old Marquis caught Tang Yueshan midair, then cracked his whip upward and caught Gu Jiao as she fell.
The three of them landed steadily atop a war chariot.
Tang Yueshan exhaled deeply.
A miscalculation. He had nearly fallen to his death!
Old Marquis shot him a disdainful side-eye.
Tang Yueshan asked, “Old Gu, what’s that look for?”
Old Marquis replied, “Heh.”
The three resumed their assault.
In close combat, Tang Yueshan’s bow was of little use, but Old Marquis’s whip was a different story. He willingly took on the task of covering Gu Jiao, sweeping through every blind spot and vulnerable angle, each strike deadly precise. The two moved in perfect harmony, an utterly invincible pair.
Tang Yueshan frowned.
…Why did it feel like Old Gu was showing off something?
Among so many grandsons, Old Marquis had only ever brought Gu Changqing into battle. Gu Changqing was his family’s most outstanding legitimate heir, and the widely acknowledged young master of the Gu Family Army.
Every single battle Gu Changqing had fought in so far had been executed with flawless brilliance.
And now, as Old Marquis watched the blood-soaked youth charging forward with fearless determination, he suddenly felt a moment of dazed illusion.
It was as if he were once again leading Gu Changqing into battle, fighting side by side with the most dazzling, most exceptional descendant of the Gu Family!
A wave of heat surged through his chest, and all the blood in his body boiled uncontrollably with excitement!
The sky gradually darkened.
But the youth seemed to carry light upon her, radiating a force that stirred the soul and inspired all who saw her.
Even Old Marquis, seasoned by countless battle campaigns, had to admit, this was a battle that thrilled the blood and soul alike.
Unfortunately, the two had not fought together for long before something unexpected occurred.
Gu Jiao had just leapt onto a Jin war chariot and slain one of their commanding officers, but in her next step, she slipped and fell from the vehicle.
Old Marquis whipped his weapon outward to catch her.
But before the whip could reach her, a tall figure surged forward from behind at lightning speed, and with arms steady and sure, caught Gu Jiao in midair and landed safely with her on an empty patch of ground.
The man lowered the visor of his iron helmet, revealing a pair of familiar eyes.
Gu Jiao blinked. “Gu Changqing?”
Gu Changqing gave a faint smile, didn’t look back, held her steady with one hand, and with a backward thrust of his sword, stabbed down a Jin soldier attempting to ambush him.
“Mm, it’s me.” He said softly.
He withdrew his sword, and using qinggong, he carried Gu Jiao back to the rear of the formation. “Go back for now and leave this to me.”
Gu Jiao stood on her own and gave him a strange look. “Weren’t you with Old Master Meng in the State of Qing?”
Gu Changqing replied, “I was. The peace negotiation has been concluded.”
With no need to remain in the State of Qing, he had ridden day and night, without pause, to reach the northwestern border.
There were faint dark circles beneath his eyes, and red veins streaked the whites, which were clear signs of exhaustion.
He gently patted Gu Jiao’s helmet and said warmly, “Wait for me back there.”
Gu Jiao responded with a quiet, “Mm.”
Gu Changqing lifted his sword and returned to the clang and chaos of the battlefield.
Even as he fought, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the old general beside him looked strangely familiar.
Forget it. Whoever it was, the sooner he finished the battle, the sooner he could see his sister.
Old Marquis, completely ignored, ground his teeth in fury.
Excellent. Now even your own grandfather is invisible to you!
……
The soldiers of the State of Yan were riding a high wave of morale, and with the battle for Xicheng all but won, there was little left to worry about.
Gu Jiao thought for a moment and made a trip back to Quyang City.
It had been exactly five days since Xuanyuan Qi took the purple herb poison, and she wanted to find out, just how was Xuanyuan Qi doing now?

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
