Chapter 3209: Live up to the Prince’s Heir’s Instructions
Lianqiao, who served Ning Shu and stood next to her, was very obedient. She pulled along the maid next to Yin Qing and went to go window shopping. However, Hongling stood in the room like a wooden post.
She held her sword without moving an inch.
Yin Qing felt a bit awkward and said to Hongling, “You may leave us. I want to speak with Miss Su alone.”
“Miss, it is my duty to protect you at all times. Only then can I live up to the prince’s heir’s instructions before he left for battle,” Hongling replied while casting a wary glance at Ning Shu.
Ning Shu calmly sipped her tea, ignoring Hongling’s piercing gaze.
Yin Qing took a deep breath. “Please leave. I’m asking you nicely.”
“Miss, I am under the prince’s heir’s orders to protect you. You shouldn’t be alone with…”
Hongling glanced toward Ning Shu.
Ning Shu set her teacup down and tapped her fingers lightly on the table. “Oh? Does the prince’s heir think I intend to harm Miss Yin?”
Hongling said nothing, but her expression was telling.Ning Shu smiled at Yin Qing. “Since we met, have I done anything to hurt you?”
Yin Qing had never felt so humiliated. Her expression kept shifting.
Ning Shu smoothed her sleeve and said, “It’s really not a big matter. I came on behalf of the Marquis Xuanping’s household to ask you something.”
Yin Qing nodded. “Please go ahead.”
“I just wanted to know how the battle in Hanyang is going. There’s been no news, and I figured the prince’s heir treats you well, so he must have written to you. Did he mention anything about the current situation there?”
Before Yin Qing could respond, Hongling interjected, “The prince’s heir has not sent any letters. We are also unaware of the current state of the battle.”
Ning Shu smiled faintly. There was a hint of disappointment in her tone as she said, “Then never mind. My father was still preparing supplies for the army, but without any news, who knows? Maybe the army is already on the way back in victory. Either way, it’s fine.”
Hongling stiffened. She seemed not to know how to respond.
Yin Qing felt the urge to laugh.
Ning Shu stood up. “Thank you for coming today. I’ll take my leave now. Feel free to stay as long as you like.”
Yin Qing also rose and gave a slight bow. “The prince’s heir has written to me. The situation appears more complicated than expected. It seems the rebellion has spread further.”
“Miss!” Hongling’s voice grew sharp. Her voice carried a trace of killing intent as she shouted at Yin Qing. “How could you say such things so lightly? The prince’s heir is currently fighting with his life on the line.”
She was practically accusing Yin Qing of stabbing Zhuo Cheran in the back.
Ning Shu looked at her in surprise. “Your tone really surprises me. No matter what, Miss Yin is still from a respectable family. You shouldn’t speak to her like that.”
“Miss Su, I don’t know why you keep coming to see Miss Yin. Whether you’re trying to befriend her or have some ulterior motive, you must know that there’s no longer any possibility of a future between you and the prince’s heir.”
Hongling, a trained operative from Zhuo Cheran’s hidden guards, was already unhappy about being assigned to protect a mere minor official’s daughter. Moreover, this very girl didn’t know what was good for her. She felt like this girl was trampling on the prince’s heir’s reputation.
To Hongling, this Miss Yin didn’t prioritize the prince’s heir’s interests, couldn’t help him in any way, and only burdened him.
She could also clearly sense that this Su Zhuru from Marquis Xuanping’s household didn’t have good intentions.
Hongling was fuming inside.
Yin Qing, pressured by Hongling’s imposing presence, grew equally annoyed. Did she ask Hongling to follow her around? Did Hongling think she wanted to be followed around?
The atmosphere was incredibly tense.
Ning Shu covered her mouth and began to laugh. Her voice was pleasant as she said to Yin Qing, “Don’t argue over an outsider like me. Alright, I should head back and report the situation to my father.”
She looked at Yin Qing and said, “Thank you for letting me know.”
Yin Qing responded calmly with a curtsy. “It’s nothing. To work for the good of the empire is the responsibility of every single one of its people.”
