Chapter 3127: There Was This Gong Family Heiress Who Died Recently
Downstairs, Ning Shu’s bodyguards were still patrolling the area. The moment they spotted her, they tensed up and reached for the guns at their waists.
In a blur of movement, Ning Shu appeared behind them and struck them both unconscious in one swift motion.
The two bodyguards collapsed limply to the ground. Ning Shu dragged them onto the lawn, where the neatly trimmed evergreens offered some cover.
She dashed upstairs, threw the door open, and said to Mother Xu, “Mom, we have to go. Now.”
“What’s going on?”
Ning Shu hastily shoved a couple of changes of clothes into a bag and tugged her mother out the door.
Mother Xu looked completely confused. She dazedly let herself be pushed into a taxi.
“What on earth is going on?” she asked as Ning Shu slammed the car door shut.
“I’ll explain in a bit,” Ning Shu said. “Drive. Take us to the bus station.”
She had booked plane tickets, but she had no intention of using them. If Gong Rong’s people traced her travel plans, the first place they’d check would be the airport. Well, she’d let them. She wasn’t going anywhere near it.The taxi dropped them at the bus station. As they got out, Mother Xu caught sight of Ning Shu’s grim expression and asked worriedly, “Did something happen? You’re making me really anxious like this.”
“I’ll explain everything properly later. Let’s just get on the bus first.” Ning Shu pulled her mother onto a coach headed for a neighboring city. They’d lie low for a while.
“How do I even begin explaining this?” Ning Shu muttered, unable to meet her mother’s stare. She didn’t know where to start. The whole thing was just crazy weird.
“There was this Gong family heiress who died recently, and the Gong family are saying I killed her.” Ning Shu said. “I didn’t kill anyone, but I’ve got no choice right now except to hide.”
Mother Xu massaged her temples. “Why is this still not over? Didn’t you already change your identity?”
Identity, huh. As if that meant anything. Today she could be Zhang San, tomorrow she’d be Li Si. Names were just names.
Ning Shu opened up the news on her phone. Sure enough, there it was. Gong Rong had died. The time of death lined up closely with when she’d left the hospital.
Gong Rong was dead.
Ning Shu exhaled slowly, then asked silently in her mind, “Gong Rong’s dead. Did he become a task-taker?”
“No,” replied 2333.
“Then did he become a system?”
“Nope.”
Only then did Ning Shu properly breathe out. As long as he hadn’t become either a system or a task-taker, she could live with that.
“So he’s entered the cycle of reincarnation?” Ning Shu patted her chest. First it was Zhang Jiasen turning into a task-taker, then Cheng Fei becoming a system. If Gong Rong had joined their ranks, she might as well give up and die now.
No wait. She refused to die that easily.
“He might have gone into reincarnation. Or maybe not,” said 2333.
Ning Shu’s expression turned ice cold. “What’s that supposed to mean? Can’t you give me a straight answer? I swear I’ll blast you to bits.”
“This task-taker organization—it’s not just task-takers and systems. There are other roles, you know. Think of it like a company, with all kinds of positions.”
Ning Shu: …
“If it’s a company, I’m pretty sure the one we’re stuck in should’ve gone bankrupt ages ago.” With how they took in absolutely anyone.
“Task-takers form an entire social ecosystem. For example, the items in the system shop—someone has to create those. And the system uses points, merit, and faith power for exchanges.”
“All roads lead to Rome. Just because he didn’t become a task-taker or a system doesn’t mean he won’t become something else,” 2333 added.
“Some people specialize in one field. As long as they reach the top, they’ll still be powerhouses.”
Ning Shu rolled her eyes and let out a cold snort. She rejected any answer that didn’t make her happy.
With Gong Rong dead, his chosen successor Gong Yi held a press conference almost immediately to solidify his position.
Ning Shu actually felt somewhat relieved. Gong Yi still looked green and inexperienced. SR Conglomerate was bound to descend into chaos for a while. Whether Gong Yi could hold that position for long remained to be seen.
To be honest, she even suspected Gong Yi was just the heir on paper—a stepping stone to be used and discarded.
After all, no one could truly know what was going on in Gong Rong’s mind.
