Chapter 3783: Thick Skinned
The registration process turned out to be far simpler than Lin Mu had expected.
After all the discussion about rankings, recruit assessments, and the structure of the sect, the actual registration amounted to little more than verifying a recruit’s identity and recording them into the sect’s records.
The Junior Elder led Little Bull to one of the desks positioned near the center of the hall. Several formation arrays were embedded into the surface of the desk while a square formation plate sat at its center.
The plate was made from a dark jade-like material and was covered in countless tiny runes.
"This is simple," the Junior Elder explained. "We only need a drop of blood."
Little Bull nodded obediently. "Okay."
The elder took out a thin silver needle and handed it over. "Prick your finger and place a drop onto the formation plate."
Little Bull looked at the needle, then he looked at his finger and then back at the needle. Finally he shrugged and pressed the needle against his fingertip. Several people watched casually.
But the next moment a faint crunching sound was heard.
The needle bent... Completely.
The tip curled sideways while Little Bull’s finger remained perfectly unharmed. Silence descended upon the area as the Junior Elder blinked. Even the two Administrative Division disciples blinked.
Several nearby disciples who had been working on paperwork also paused and stared. Little Bull looked at the bent needle, then he looked at the elder.
"I think it’s broken."
The silence lasted for another second before Elder He Jian burst out laughing.
"Hahaha!" The old man slapped his knee. "I forgot."
The Junior Elder finally recovered.
"Forgot what?" he asked.
"A normal needle won’t work." The old man continued chuckling.
Only now did the Junior Elder fully remember hearing rumors about a special physique. Initially he had not paid much attention. The Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect recruited countless talented people every year. Strange physiques were hardly uncommon.
Now, however, his interest rose considerably.
The two disciples who had been silently judging Little Bull exchanged glances.
One of them snorted. "He probably just has thick skin."
The other nodded. "Some mortals naturally do."
Neither sounded particularly convinced.
The Junior Elder frowned slightly before taking out a small dagger. The blade gleamed with spiritual light. It was a Low Grade Spirit Weapon and was more than enough to cut through steel like paper.
"Let’s try this."
Little Bull obediently extended his finger and the elder lightly pressed the blade against it. But nothing happened. The elder frowned and applied more force. Still nothing happened and the blade simply slid across the skin.
Not even a scratch appeared. The surrounding disciples had begun openly watching now.
’Interesting.’ The Junior Elder raised an eyebrow. ’Very interesting.’
He increased the pressure further as the dagger creaked slightly. Little Bull merely stared curiously. The elder finally withdrew the weapon as not a single mark could be seen. The Administrative Division disciples had stopped talking entirely.
Even they were beginning to understand that something unusual was happening.
The Junior Elder inspected the dagger, noticing that the edge had dulled. He looked at Little Bull. Then at the dagger. Then back at Little Bull. For the first time genuine surprise appeared on his face.
Little Bull scratched his head. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No." The elder shook his head. "You didn’t."
Elder He Jian merely smiled from the side. "I told you the boy is special."
The Junior Elder nodded slowly. "Special indeed."
The two disciples who had been dismissive earlier now seemed far less confident.
One of them quietly muttered. "...that’s not normal."
The other simply nodded.
If someone had used that dagger against them without defensive techniques, they would have been injured. Yet a mortal had stood there completely unaffected. The Junior Elder took out another weapon.
This time it was a sword and the blade radiated a much stronger aura. Several nearby disciples immediately recognized it. "High Grade Spirit Weapon."
Now even more people were watching.
Little Bull obediently held out his hand again. The Junior Elder carefully pressed the sword against his skin as a metallic scraping sound echoed. The sword slid across the finger but nothing happened.
The elder increased the force as more spiritual energy flowed into the blade. The edge dug against the skin and finally a faint white line appeared.
Just a tiny mark, nothing more.
The sword had failed to pierce through. The hall grew increasingly quiet and several disciples were openly staring now. Even Lin Mu felt slightly awkward. After all, this was simply his natural toughness.
He was not circulating body cultivation techniques, he was not using immortal essence and he was not reinforcing himself. This was merely the passive durability his body possessed.
Little Bull looked at the sword, then at the elder and then said something that made several people blink.
"Maybe try a beast claw?"
The Junior Elder looked confused.
Little Bull nodded seriously. "Beast claws have hurt me before."
Elder He Jian immediately understood. The old man had heard enough stories about Little Bull’s life to know what he meant. The villagers often spoke about him fighting beasts. Naturally beast claws had injured him before.
The old man sighed, then stepped forward. "Enough."
The Junior Elder nodded and stepped aside. If even a High Grade Spirit Weapon was struggling, continuing would only waste time. Elder He Jian raised one finger as blue light gathered around it.
The surrounding air shifted slightly.
"Blue Blade Finger Art." Someone recognized it.
The old man gently tapped Little Bull’s finger and Lin Mu immediately felt the pressure. Of course, if he truly resisted, even this would not accomplish much. At the same time, continuing this farce any longer would only attract more attention.
Thus Lin Mu quietly used the Absolute Body Control Art as a tiny amount of blood was forced upward. The next moment a small droplet appeared and everyone relaxed.
"Finally."
The blood slowly rolled down the fingertip. But no one noticed the important detail. The skin itself remained intact, there was no cut or wound. The blood had simply emerged from the pores.
Even Elder He Jian overlooked it.
