Chapter 3747: Possible Identities
"This..." Meng Bai muttered as he saw the screen.
Lady Kang explained further.
"The sect has no peak divisions."
Everyone looked at her.
"No peaks?" Daoist Chu asked.
She shook her head.
"While they still have peaks, the cities themselves act as divisions."
The projection enlarged.
Massive cities lit up one after another.
"Each major city has administrative functions."
"Training."
"Combat."
"Alchemy."
"Formation Dao."
"Merchant operations."
"Law enforcement."
"Resource gathering."
"The entire world functions together."
Lin Mu watched quietly.
This was not a sect anymore.
This was an empire.
"There are still forests and wilderness zones between cities." Lady Kang continued. "Natural beasts live there. Ancient regions too."
The image shifted again.
Wild territories appeared.
Some looked untouched.
Others had warning markers.
Elyon looked interested.
"Good hunting grounds."
Lady Kang nodded.
"There are many."
Lin Mu however thought differently.
If the vault was hidden within some city...
That was one problem.
If it was beneath sect territory...
Another problem.
But if it was somewhere remote...
Deep in the wilderness...
Ancient lands...
Hidden ruins...
Or even underwater in some corner of the ocean...
The search would become vastly harder.
His expression gradually turned serious.
The world was enormous.
Finding one hidden vault inside it...
It would be like searching for a grain of sand in an ocean.
Lady Kang seemed to understand his thoughts.
She softly said.
"The good news is the sect likely doesn’t know it exists."
Lin Mu nodded.
"The bad news..." Daoist Chu added.
Everyone looked at him.
The man sighed.
"...Neither do we."
Silence returned.
After several moments Lin Mu finally leaned back.
"We need more information."
Lady Kang nodded.
"Already working on it."
"I want historical records too." Lin Mu added. "Old maps. Land changes. Hidden regions. Anything related to the Virtuous Calamity Daoist."
Lady Kang immediately noted it down.
Meng Bai suddenly raised his hand.
Everyone looked at him.
"If Master uses a fake identity..."
He looked thoughtful.
"...What kind of person will Master pretend to be?"
The room grew quiet.
Lin Mu paused.
He had thought about infiltration.
Appearance.
Cultivation.
Background.
But personality...
Not yet.
Cattaleya grinned.
"Make him a weak scholar."
Daoist Chu laughed.
"He’ll be exposed in a day."
Elyon crossed his arms.
"Merchant?"
Lady Kang immediately rejected it.
"No."
Meng Bai tilted his head.
"Spear cultivator?"
Lin Mu instantly shook his head.
Too obvious.
Silence followed again.
Then Elyon, who had been silently drinking in a corner this entire time, finally spoke.
"Make him an honest young man."
Everyone stared.
Elyon took another drink.
"No one will suspect it."
Lin Mu looked at him.
"...Why?"
The wolfkin grinned.
"Because it’ll be the greatest disguise of all."
Lin Mu rubbed his forehead after hearing Elyon’s suggestion and decided to move past the topic before the wolfkin began giving examples.
"The personality can be decided later." Lin Mu spoke. "It depends on the identity I end up using. If I take someone’s identity, I cannot act too differently from how they originally were."
Elyon nodded immediately.
Among everyone present, he probably had the most experience with disguises and false identities.
After all, the wolfkin had lived as a mercenary, spy and assassin for years. Deception and infiltration were practically part of his profession.
"That is true." Elyon said. "The personality matters as much as appearance."
Everyone looked at him.
"You should choose someone whose strengths already overlap with your own." Elyon continued. "If the identity uses a spear, then use a spear. If he is talented in formations, then use formations. The more you already resemble him, the less acting you will need."
Lin Mu nodded.
That was reasonable.
Pretending to be an entirely different person would only increase mistakes.
But before the discussion could continue, Cattaleya suddenly crossed her arms.
"There is another problem."
Meng Bai looked at her.
"What problem?"
Catt only said one word.
"Humble."
The room went silent.
Lin Mu blinked.
"...What?"
Catt pointed at him.
"You are far too humble."
Meng Bai looked utterly confused.
"What is wrong with that?"
Catt stared at him as if he had asked the most ridiculous question in existence.
"Everything!"
She stood up dramatically.
"Forget cultivators. Even mortals become arrogant after gaining a little power."
She pointed at Lin Mu again.
"You have enough power to destroy entire empires and yet you still apologize when people bump into you."
Daoist Chu nearly choked on his tea.
Elyon looked away to hide his expression.
Meng Bai thought about it.
Then slowly nodded.
"Master does apologize a lot..."
Lin Mu looked wronged.
"I do not."
Everyone stared at him.
Silence.
"...Not that much." Lin Mu corrected.
Catt immediately shook her head.
"No! You are too nice."
Lin Mu sighed.
"I do not want to act arrogant."
"You do not need to." Daoist Chu suddenly spoke.
Everyone looked at him.
The man stroked his beard thoughtfully.
"Instead of arrogance, give the identity some unusual traits."
Lin Mu listened.
"You can remain honest." Daoist Chu said. "But make the personality distinct."
He thought for a moment.
"Perhaps eccentric."
"Reserved."
"Overly scholarly."
"Obsessed with cultivation."
"Strange habits."
"Unique speech."
"Things people remember."
Lin Mu rubbed his forehead.
"This is harder than cultivation..."
"Good thing I prepared for it!" Catt suddenly declared.
Before anyone could ask, she waved her hand.
Hundreds of books appeared. So much so that the table vanished under them.
More books kept appearing.
Novels.
Story scrolls.
Adventure records.
Cultivation epics.
Hero tales.
Romance dramas.
Sword legends.
Villain biographies.
Scholar stories.
Reclusive master chronicles.
Lin Mu stared at the mountain of literature.
"...What is all this?"
Catt smiled proudly.
"Research materials."
Lin Mu looked horrified.
"You want me to read these?"
"Of course!" Catt replied happily.
She picked up a book.
"This one is about an evil sword immortal who acts cold but secretly raises spirit chickens."
Another.
"This one is a wandering scholar who speaks only in poetry."
Another.
"This one is a demon lord pretending to be a gardener."
Daoist Chu silently turned away.
Meng Bai looked interested.
Elyon actually picked up one.
Lady Kang nodded seriously.
"She is right."
