Chapter 2627: Deity Names
Zu An was speechless. Hold on, so you really aren’t on the same side?
“Can you tell me more about your encounter with that fellow?” the masked figure urged.
Zu An huffed, “You came here yapping about avenging your comrade. You’re the one who picked a fight, and now you’re also the one who wants to stop the fight. Why should I answer your question?”
The masked figure bowed to Zu An. “I apologize to you for my earlier disrespect and seek your forgiveness. I’ll present you with a satisfactory gift afterward as compensation.”
“What’s the gift?” Shang Hongyu asked. She didn’t want her lover to be fooled by vague terms.
“I guarantee your satisfaction. I swear on my position as a Mirror Scribe,” the masked figure replied.
Since the other party had already made such a vow, the duo didn’t dwell on the matter.
Zu An began recounting his encounter with the Time Scribe in the Monster World. The masked figure raised a few questions along the way, and Zu An answered them all.
After hearing the full story, the masked figure remarked, “Based on what you have told me, that fellow might really have been a Time Scribe. He wielded the Spring and Autumn Brush, the tool used by Time Scribes. But I’m curious to know how you became aware of his identity. He shouldn’t have told an outsider that he was a Time Scribe.”
“I have my ways of finding out.” There was no way Zu An would tell the other party about Mi Li’s existence. “Can you tell me more about the grudge between Mirror Scribes and Time Scribes?”
The masked figure knew someone who had become a world’s master was bound to have many fortuitous encounters. The latter could indeed have encountered a Time Scribe somehow. Since Zu An was unwilling to speak, he chose not to continue probing either. “We might be fellow scribes, but we worship different philosophies and deities. We, the Mirror Scribes, view history as a mirror, and we seek to record objective truths.
“The Time Scribes, on the other hand, have lost their basic principles as scribes and seek to toy with history. Events they pen with their Spring and Autumn Brushes depict a twisted version of the truth, misleading others into forming a false impression.
“That’s why we are absolute nemeses. That fellow was hiding among us for a long time now; there’s no doubt he harbored malicious intent. It’s a relief that you eliminated him, even if unintentionally, or else it could have spelled a disaster for us.”
The revelation that an old comrade had secretly been a Time Scribe made him shudder. To have infiltrated us, he must have been up to something terrible.
Zu An took this chance to probe further. “You mentioned that you worship different deities. What’s the deity you worship?”
He had a feeling that the deity worshiped by the other party wasn't just a minor deity, but a universal deity.
The masked figure frowned. “If you learn their names, you will be dragged into the war among deities. Are you certain that you’re prepared for that?”
Shang Hongyu grabbed Zu An’s hands and looked at him worriedly. Despite knowing the height she had reached in her previous life, she was happy with her current one. Ah Zu is carefree and happy in this world; there’s nothing bad about this. If he gets tied up in other matters, there's a good chance he might have to leave this world. That’s the last thing I want to happen.
Zu An hesitated too. Being this world’s master was a carefree job for him. He wasn’t certain whether he wanted to brave unknown risks. However, this was also his only chance to learn about the deities’ names. Mi Li would never tell him about those beings. But if he confirmed that he wanted to know, this masked figure would tell him.
He thought about how Jiang Luofu had been summoned by an enigmatic entity, as well as Gong Suyin and the Goddess of Wu Mountain’s unknown plights... There were too many mysteries that he needed to unravel, and he needed greater power to do so.
“I’m ready, but I have a question. Someone once told me that it’s a taboo to reveal a deity’s name. Obliteration may ensue if one catches the deity’s gaze. If so, why is it that you are able to tell me your deity’s name?” Zu An asked.
“Your friend was trying to protect you. It’ll only bring destruction upon yourself if you learn about a deity’s name when you are incapable of shouldering the burden. I can reveal it because I am a Mirror Scribe. I am responsible for recording the universe’s objective history,” the masked figure replied proudly. “As a world’s master, you are qualified to learn about the universe’s secrets. That being said, given your limited strength, I can only tell you the names of two deities. You are already implicated in this karma, so with the protection of that karma and my unique identity, you should be able to avoid being destroyed by the deities’ overwhelming power.”
Zu An’s face turned serious. Mi Li wasn’t lying to me. Even the preconditions are harsh.
The masked figure spoke in a tone resembling documentary narrators in Zu An’s previous life, “We, the Mirror Scribes, worship the Deity of Memory, Meng. We record past, future, and erased events. Be it from memories from a person or a world, we record everything that happens in the universe, including life, death, and the destruction of worlds. As long as our records persist, they will not be truly dead.”
Zu An was taken aback. He had imagined the name of a universal god to be majestic, but it was surprisingly simple. Hold on, would having such a thought be considered blasphemy?
He got nervous for a while there, but fortunately, there was no divine retribution.
“You have a noble goal,” Zu An sincerely said. Judging from the other party’s passionate tone, he could tell that the latter believed in his cause.
Their records would no doubt have helped many as well, since the recorded beings and worlds were, in a way, eternal as long as their records remained.
The masked figure was delighted to receive Zu An’s acknowledgment. “Why don’t you join us in worshiping the great Deity Meng and become a Mirror Scribe too?”
“I know too little about the deities. It’d be insincere of me to worship a deity on a whim,” Zu An subtly declined the offer. You must be joking. I don’t even know what’s going on with those universal deities, so how can I haphazardly join a side? Besides, I am at least a minor deity who governs this world’s cycle of reincarnation.
“You’re right. I have gotten ahead of myself.” The masked figure didn’t insist on it. “Next, I will share with you the deity worshiped by the Time Scribes. They believe in chaos and enigma, and their deity’s name is ‘Mi Li’.”
“What did you say their deity’s name was?” Zu An felt as if a hammer had struck his heart.
