Chapter 3838: Reason

Chapter 3838: Reason

During this hundred-year period, no one could harm Lian Jing. Of course, he also could not perform any heinous acts. However, revenge was allowed. Many had chosen to enter Whither Peak solely for the purpose of vengeance.

Some, driven to utter despair by the relentless pursuit of their enemies, had chosen to climb Whither Peak and become Immortal’s disciples. Doing so would grant them 100 years of safety, and they could wait until the final year to return to the mountain. During that time, they would strike and slaughter all of their enemies. In turn, their enemies would go to great lengths to hide.

“There was once someone who, in order to avoid being targeted by an Immortal’s disciple, fled to the bottom of Whither Peak. They then climbed the mountain themselves. Success would mean 100 years of their own protection, which would naturally mean that they could not be killed,” Jian Hong whispered.

Lu Yin asked, “What if they failed?”

“It is far from easy to climb up Whither Peak. Common knowledge says that, typically, only Dukkhans can succeed. That’s why most who try don’t fail, as they are already among the most powerful. However, if one does fail, they fall. Life or death will then depend on fate.”

“Where do the people who climb Whither Peak actually go?”

“No one knows. It’s always been a mystery. No one has ever returned alive, and not even a body has ever been recovered.”

“But since the Greater Sancti grant the successful people a hundred-year reprieve, they must be offering something,” Lu Yin speculated.

Jian Hong said nothing further. The people of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse did not dare to speculate on the will of the Greater Sancti. They respected the Immortals far too much for that.

Lu Yin looked back at Lian Jing. “So, I can’t do anything to him?”

Jian Hong shook his head. “If you kill him, the Greater Sancti will not stay silent.”

The Greater Sancti... Lu Yin truly had no desire to cross any such expert.

With all that Lu Yin had just learned, he understood that Lian Jing was using his century of immunity to stand in the way and stop Lu Yin from completing his task. It was absolutely infuriating.

“I won’t kill you,” Lu Yin stated, to the surprise of no one.

“Then I ask that you not interfere in this matter, Mr. Lu.”

“However, that doesn’t mean that there’s any problem with sealing you,” Lu Yin continued.

Lian Jing smiled. “Do you know why I am the one standing here, Mr. Lu? The first reason is that I am an Immortal’s disciple, while the second is because no one can seal me.”

Jian Hong spoke through clenched teeth, “I’ve heard for a long time that Lian Jing possesses the ability of Infinite Twists and has comprehended the Dodge sequence particles. Is it possible that the rumors are actually true?”

Lian Jing smiled. “Rather than dodging myself, I make my opponent dodge. You are right, though, my sequence particles are those of Dodge.”

He then looked at Lu Yin. “I say all of this in hopes that you will abandon Jian Hong, Mr. Lu. This is a matter of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, and it has nothing to do with you. I do not wish to go against you, Mr. Lu.”

“You’re about to leave the Nine Odysseys Megaverse forever, so why are you worried about offending me?”

“Life and death don’t conflict with integrity. I, Lian Jing, act in line with my conscience. I respect heaven and earth, as well as my title as an Immortal’s disciple, which I was granted by the Greater Sancti.”

Lu Yin nodded appreciatively. “You have your principles. Still, I’d like to see if I can seal you.”

Lian Jing gestured politely. “Mr. Lu, your swordsmanship is without equal, your consciousness extraordinary, and your physical power unmatched. In a direct fight, I would be instantly defeated by you. However, I am quite proficient when it comes to escaping. Please, feel free to try.”

Lu Yin took action. Dark-red divine energy was released, and it quickly filled the sky in all directions as he released True God's Dominion.

Lian Jing’s expression slightly changed. What a marvelous sealing technique!

He pushed the void open with both hands as Dominion sealed him in from above before shrinking down upon him. His body flickered between real and illusory, and more and more copies of the man appeared in every direction, until even Lu Yin had trouble distinguishing the man’s true body from the fake ones.

Is this his Infinite Twists?

Lian Jing used his ability to gradually nullify Dominion. True God’s ultimate technique had once sealed a great number of the Tianyuan’s top experts. However, no matter what his strength was, Yong Heng was not an Immortal, just a peak Dukkhan, which was the same as Lian Jing. It did not matter if the man’s cultivation had been accrued through his own efforts or through Seed Transfusion.

Yong Heng’s strength did not completely eclipse Lian Jing’s, let alone a single one of True God’s techniques.

Even so, Dominion completely amazed Lian Jing.

“Even if only briefly, it still managed to restrain me for a moment. Truly an incredible technique. You have my respect, Mr. Lu.”

Dominion vanished, already broken by Lian Jing.

Seeing that neither Lian Jing nor Jian Hong reacted oddly, Lu Yin understood that neither man knew anything about Yong Heng. He had used Dominion as a test.

Lian Jing glanced at Jian Hong. Dominion had shaken Lian Jing’s confidence, and he was no longer confident that he could snatch Jian Hong with his Infinite Twists. That had been his original plan, since he had known that Lu Yin would never dare to use lethal force against him.

However, even if Dominion was only able to trap Lian Jing for a moment, it was enough for Lu Yin to leave with Jian Hong.

Lian Jing had already failed.

“Mr. Lu, you have no ties to the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, so why help Jian Hong?” Lian Jing once tried again to dissuade Lu Yin. “I may not be qualified, but I still have more than a decade of my immunity period remaining. Should you have something difficult that you wish to accomplish, feel free to tell me, and I will help however I can.”

Jian Hong tightened his grip on his basket. He did not know if Lu Yin would abandon him or not. Lian Jing was a powerful expert who could not be touched. There was no doubt that he was far more valuable than Jian Hong.

Lu Yin had anticipated that it would be necessary to use the Heaven and Earth Lock to restrain Lian Jing, but apparently, he had overestimated matters.

Dominion alone was enough to ensure that Lian Jing would not be able to kill Jian Hong, and the man was also unable to defeat Lu Yin. Thus, it was impossible for the man to block Lu Yin.

“There’s no need for that,” Lu Yin replied. “Though I am curious—once you disappear from the Nine Odysseys Megaverse forever, will you regret climbing Whither Peak?”

Lian Jing shook his head. “I have no regrets. Everything that needed to be done has already been done.”

“Then why get involved in this matter?” Jian Hong asked in confusion.

Lian Jing looked over. “I owe someone a favor, and this is the time to repay it.”

Lu Yin quite admired the man. Much like Lu Sizhan, Lian Jing was an upright and direct person. There was no denying that, once a civilization advanced to a certain point, even if its culture was that of the strong preying on the weak, it would gain a hint of humanity.

Despite only recently coming to the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, Lu Yin had a good impression of most of the people that he had met.

Of course, there was no denying that the way in which the Nine Odysseys Megaverse harvested resources from the Spirit Nidus was absolutely vicious.

When a civilization could completely separate rationality from humanity, it became truly terrifying.

Treating those within with humanity, and all outsiders with rationality.

“You can leave now. I need to get him to the Sixth Night Pillar,” Lu Yin stated.

Lian Jing sighed. “Why must you be so insistent on this, Mr. Lu?”

“I also made a promise.”

Lian Jing held Lu Yin’s gaze and then nodded. “In that case, I’ll take my leave.”

The man showed no hesitation as he turned and left. He knew that there was no chance of him capturing Jian Hong.

Once Lian Jing left, Jian Hong quietly stated, “The creature I carry comes from a foreign megaverse.”

“I sensed that,” Lu Yin said.

Jian Hong stared at Lu Yin’s back. “A foreign megaverse that has never been encountered before.”

Lu Yin turned to look at Jian Hong in shock. “An unknown megaverse?”

Jian Hong nodded. “The Seventh Night Pillar was sent to increase the number of parallel universes in the Orchid Megaverse to ensure that it can be reset. While doing so, we discovered a previously unknown megaverse. Bringing this lifeform back means-”

“War is approaching,” Lu Yin finished for him.

“Exactly. The Nine Odysseys are responsible for keeping watch, and the Seventh Night Pillar has already confirmed that this new megaverse can be destroyed, so they brought the creature back to send it to the Sixth Night Pillar and report the matter to the Greater Sancti. If the Sixth Pillar submits the report, they will be the one to lead the next war. This is an incredible gift to the Sixth Night Pillar from the Seventh.”

“Why doesn’t the Seventh Night Pillar just lead the war themselves?”

“The Seventh Night Pillar has just completed a mission in the Orchid Megaverse, and they are therefore not eligible to participate in the next war.”

“So the Fifth Night Pillar sent people to steal this creature so that they can seize control of the next war?”

Jian Hong nodded. “An external war has the potential for incredible rewards. Also, during wartime, an Odyssey Commander's authority is equal to that of the Lesser Sancti, allowing them to do things that would normally be impossible for them. The Fifth Night Pillar’s Azuresword Sovereign has long since wanted to become an Odyssey Commander.

“The Autumnspring Slip only managed to even come into existence because of its mirebound artifact, which originally came from a destroyed megaverse.

“Who wouldn’t fight for such an opportunity? The primary purpose of the Nine Odysseys is to wage war against foreign megaverses.”

Lu Yin did not focus on the Nine Odysseys’ war potential, but was instead considering something that Ming Zhou had once mentioned.

He had commented that the Fifth Night Pillar had been behaving strangely in recent years and that they might be preparing for war with a foreign megaverse. When Lu Yin had first heard that, he had assumed that their target was one of the three megaverses, but this new information meant that it was far more likely that they were targeting the newly discovered megaverse.

“When did the Fifth Night Pillar learn about this external universe?”

Jian Hong replied, “Two years ago.”

Lu Yin frowned. “Just two years ago?”

Jian Hong nodded. “It must have been two years ago. There’s no way for them to have learned about it before the Seventh Night Pillar’s return. The Seventh Night Pillar was the one that made the discovery.”

Lu Yin’s heart dropped once more. Ming Zhou had said that the Fifth Night Pillar had been acting strangely for far longer than just two years. If they had only learned about the new megaverse two years ago, then their unusual behavior was not because of that megaverse. Their target could still very well be one of the three megaverses.

Odyssey Commander... or Lesser Sancti? Lu Yin would have to secure at least one of those two titles.

“Let’s go. No one will dare to stop us now,” Lu Yin said.

Jian Hong let out a breath of relief. Lian Jing had only dared to interfere because of his status as one of Whither Peak’s disciples. Without that, the man would have never shown his face. Given the current situation, even if the Azuresword Sovereign himself tried to block their path, Jian Hong remained confident that they would reach the Sixth Night Pillar. He was traveling with a man who had single handedly destroyed the Autumnspring Slip. Such strength was unfathomable.

Elsewhere, Lian Jing reported what had transpired to the Fifth Night Pillar via a communication device.

The Azuresword Sovereign was the first to learn of the matter, and in his fury, he thrust his sword through ten mountain ranges.

The Night Pillars not only protected the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, but they also carried the responsibility of fighting against foreign megaverses. Because of that, the Night Pillars were built out of incredibly durable materials, and they were in no way inferior to battleships like Boundless. In fact, due to their sheer size, the Night Pillars were even more impressive. They demonstrated the strength of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse’s foundation.

Stabbing through ten mountain ranges with a single thrust revealed the Azuresword Sovereign’s terrifying strength. The many cultivators in the Fifth Night Pillar quivered, not knowing who had enraged the man.

Xian Ding stared at the ruined mountains in shock. What had gone wrong?

“Come here.”

The Azuresword Sovereign’s voice reached Xian Ding’s ear, causing the younger man’s face to turn pale. He hurried over to his master, despite his reluctance. No one wanted to meet with the Azuresword Sovereign when he was enraged.

“Master,” Xian Ding respectfully greeted the man. He stood before a gaunt old man. The Azuresword Sovereign was wearing a black robe with a sword hidden beneath it. An initial glance gave the impression of a blackened bamboo stalk; the man was unnaturally thin, and his face was pale and bloodless with sunken eyes that carried a vague chill. Just one look from the man left Xian Ding feeling as though ice was creeping over his skin.

This old man was one of the most formidable swordmasters in the Nine Odysseys Megaverse.

In the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, no conversation regarding swordsmanship could ignore the Azuresword Sovereign. His mastery of his Minor Harmonious Sword Canon had allowed him to roam the megaverse unchecked. After he mastered the Greater Harmonious Sword Canon, he became one of the leading candidates to become the Fifth Night Pillar’s Odyssey Commander.

If Jian Hong’s claim of having comprehended three-tenths of the world’s sword intent was regarded as boasting or aspirational, then the Azuresword Sovereign might very well have actually succeeded in comprehending three-tenths of the world’s sword intent.

There was no doubt that he was among the five most skilled swords masters in the entire Nine Odysseys Megaverse.
