Chapter 538: Chapter 511: Backstab
After the fierce battle, the onlookers had been driven far away. Only one man and one dragon remained in the center of the battlefield.
Ronin had used the cover of the shockwave to pull all four Black Nails from Carlos’s body. He was now using a potent Healing Scroll to treat the dragon’s wounds.
Although Carlos had several gaping wounds, it wouldn’t take long for him to fully recover, thanks to the Giant Dragon’s extraordinary constitution and regenerative abilities.
"Ronin, he... he killed the Crown Prince?"
A young noble asked with a trembling voice, his eyes filled with terror.
’An attack that violent... there’s no way he could have survived, right?’
’This means the throne of the Oduin Kingdom truly has no heir!’
Ronin’s Spiritual Power swept over the ruins. He could sense that Garrett wasn’t dead. In fact, his heartbeat was strong, and he still had the strength to push aside the rubble. ’He’s probably waiting for a chance to launch a sneak attack,’ Ronin thought.
In truth, he had shifted his attack slightly at the last moment, sparing Garrett’s life.
It wasn’t that Ronin was being merciful, nor that he was unwilling or afraid to kill Garrett.
It was just not the right time yet.
After all, his accusations against Garrett were just his word against the prince’s. Even if his version was more logical, he had no direct proof.
He turned his gaze to the beautiful woman who had been watching from the sidelines.
"So, Storm Divine Envoy, how much longer do you plan on being a spectator?"
The corners of Serdil’s mouth curled up. She clapped her hands softly and drifted forward from the crowd, not looking the least bit flustered.
"To think that a continent where Elemental Power is so scarce and chaotic could produce a Legendary Level expert as young as you. How astonishing!"
This compliment, tinged with disdain, struck the onlookers like a thunderclap.
"Legendary?"
"My god, Legendary? The Legendary Level, above Proud Sun?"
The crowd exploded into heated discussion.
It seemed that not a single Legendary figure had appeared on the continent since the death of Emperor Orland.
’Ronin is actually Legendary?’
The faces of Ference, Andrea, MacLaren, and the others fell.
’They had planned to kill Ronin before he reached a level they couldn’t possibly match, but they never imagined he was already there.’
’By killing Bruno, they had also unshackled Ronin. If he decided to turn on them now, how could they possibly defend themselves?’
A wave of regret washed over them.
’If they could do it all over again, perhaps they wouldn’t have killed Bruno.’
’After all, maintaining a superficial harmony was better than living in constant fear.’
But in this world, there was no cure for regret.
Ronin ignored her compliment.
"On my way to Golden Feather City, I was thinking... Garrett isn’t smart enough to come up with such a complex series of plots. If I’m not mistaken, you’re the one who was pulling the strings all along, right? From having Bret assassinate His Majesty the King, to using the disturbance in Mist City to lure me away from Wubei Territory, and then slandering my name afterward?"
Serdil glanced at the ruins, then at Ference and the others in the crowd, and finally turned her gaze to Ronin.
She chuckled. "That’s right. The entire scheme was mine!"
The moment the words left her lips, the eyes of Ference, Andrea, and the others shot wide open.
’Isn’t Serdil openly admitting that Garrett was the one who killed Bruno?’
’It was one thing to do it, but another thing entirely for everyone to know it was done.’
"No, no, no!"
Fear flashed across Duke Ference’s face. He had never expected this turn of events.
’According to the plan, this was never supposed to be revealed!’
Ronin was also surprised. He had only been trying to bait her into talking, but he never expected her to admit it so openly.
He mulled it over. ’What is Serdil trying to accomplish by doing this?’
In truth, the Holy Storm Organization hadn’t come to the Orland Continent to rule it, much less to bring it peace.
To the Demon God, stability was pointless.
Thus, their ultimate goal had always been to create war. Against a backdrop of chaos, they would use society as a nursery to cultivate more Wind Mages and Flame Seal Knights.
They would use their power to restore the strength of the Demon God, who had been grievously wounded a millennium ago.
As far as Serdil was concerned, Garrett’s dignity and the honor of the nobles were not her concern.
Now that she was facing Ronin, Garrett’s usefulness was limited. It was better to lash them all to her own cause, leaving them no opportunity for reconciliation or de-escalation.
Besides, as a Great Mage, she was at a disadvantage against a Legendary Level powerhouse. If this pack of nobles reconciled with Ronin, wouldn’t she become the common enemy?
BOOM!
A beam of purple lightning blasted through the ruined walls, and Garrett leaped out from the rubble.
He shot Serdil a venomous glare before swiftly turning his hateful gaze upon Ronin.
Patricide meant nothing to him anymore.
Ronin’s relentless punches had just trampled his dignity and psyche, grinding them into dust.
For Garrett now, he craved greater power, but even more, he craved to kill the man before him, the one who always remained so infuriatingly calm.
"Serdil, cut the crap! Whatever tricks you have, use them now. If I die, you won’t necessarily escape either!"
Garrett commanded coldly, "Ference, Andrea, MacLaren, Laoshan! All of you nobles! Obey my command and attack Ronin together!"
"Anyone who dares to hold back will be committing treason against the Oduin Kingdom! When this is over, I will settle the score with your families, one by one!"
At these words, the silent nobles grew agitated.
They looked from Garrett to Ronin, unable to afford offending either side.
But the Crown Prince was forcing them to choose a side.
Ronin’s gaze swept over the crowd. "You all heard it. His Majesty King Bruno died at their hands. As the Duke of Conqueror and Guardian Knight of the Oduin Kingdom, titles bestowed upon me by His Majesty himself, I have a duty to avenge him!"
He paused. "Now, I ask all uninvolved parties to leave. I swear on the name of the Wushan Clan that if Garrett causes trouble for your families over this matter in the future, I, the Duke of Conqueror, will grant you and your descendants my eternal protection!"
After a brief silence, someone finally stepped forward.
Ronin recognized him. It was Baron Dani of Ent Territory, located above Moonlight Valley.
"Ronning Duke, please, you must avenge His Majesty! If you need any resources, Ent Territory will offer its full support!"
Garrett’s sharp, hawk-like gaze snapped toward Dani. "You’re asking to die!"
CRACKLE!
A piercing bolt of lightning shot toward him. A chill ran down Dani’s spine; he knew if it hit, he would be obliterated.
But at that very moment, a figure as solid and dependable as a mountain appeared before him. With a simple raise of his palm, he caught the lightning bolt.
"Th-Thank you!"
Ronin glanced at the man. "Go. Leave the Golden Feather Palace, and tell the world the truth of what happened here!"
"Alright!"
Not daring to linger another moment, Dani turned and ran out of the palace.
Following his example, a second person left, and then a third.
Garrett, Ference, and the others tried to stop them, but Ronin intercepted their every move.
In the distance, Broel, the Vice Leader of the Royal Griffin Knight Order, finally managed to break free from his captors. As he watched Ronin stand alone, surrounded by Serdil and dozens of others, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of reverence.
’I... I have to do something. For you, and for His Majesty the King!’
