Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Don’t Close the Window Tonight
The elevator doors slowly slid open.
Renee Jennings walked out of the car, carrying the tuxedo cat Cici, and immediately saw the tall figure of Richie.
"Streamer!" Although Richie was a handsome, six-foot-three guy, he had a very shy personality. "Thank you for being willing to help."
"You’re welcome," Renee said coolly. "Where do you live?"
Richie hadn’t expected her to come over, so he quickly led the way. "This way, Streamer."
Renee entered the living room and asked again, "Where is your room?"
Richie continued to lead the way. His room was at the very end of the hall, near the bathroom.
When they reached his bedroom door, Renee handed him the tuxedo cat. "Hold him."
Hearing this, Richie immediately reached out and took the tuxedo cat.
Renee looked at him, a serious expression appearing on her delicate features. "Here’s the deal. To protect my cat, I need to record a short video to prove I’ve handed him over to you. You don’t mind, do you?"
"I don’t mind," Richie said, quickly shaking his head.
"Good." Renee took out her phone and recorded a video. Then she walked to the window, leaned out to look around, and instructed, "Don’t close the window tonight."
Richie nodded quickly. "Okay, Streamer. I’ll remember that."
Renee then looked at Cici, a gentle smile spreading in her eyes as she spoke softly, "Cici, I’m going home now. Are you sure you want to stay here and help Brother Richie?"
"Renee, I’m sure of it," Cici meowed, nodding his fuzzy head in assurance. "Cici promises to complete the mission!"
"Okay." Renee smiled and stroked his head. "I’m leaving, then. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow."
She placed a small bag of cat food on the table. "Later, when Cici gets hungry, he’ll bring you the food to be fed. You can just get him a bowl of water at the same time."
Richie said earnestly, "Okay, Streamer. I understand."
Renee said, "I’ll be going now."
"I’ll see you out, Streamer." Richie followed behind her.
Renee took a few steps, then stopped and turned back to him. "Oh, right. If Cici scratches at the door, it means he needs to use the toilet. Just take him to the bathroom and let him manage."
"Got it." Richie nodded emphatically, his face and ears turning red. "I’m sorry, Streamer. For all the trouble."
Seeing his face instantly flush, Renee raised an eyebrow slightly. "It’s no trouble."
She recalled some of the girls in her chat yesterday sending bullet comments saying that Richie looked very handsome when he blushed.
Seeing him blush face-to-face now, Renee couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. ’He really is handsome.’
Renee took the elevator downstairs. Just as she walked out of the building entrance, Mary the Sparrow immediately flew to her side.
"Renee."
"Mary, come with me." Renee led her to the side of the building with Richie’s room and pointed to a fifth-floor window. "Cici is up there."
Mary chirped excitedly, "This little bird is going to find him right now~"
Renee smiled and nodded. "Be safe, Mary."
Mary tossed back a "Don’t worry!" and shot upwards with a flap of her wings.
Only when she could no longer see Mary’s figure did Renee start walking toward the ground-level parking lot.
Lucy Perry drove to her brother’s house.
"Lulu, you’re here." Monica Ford, wearing an apron, came to open the door for her.
"Sister-in-law." Lucy Perry greeted her with a smile.
Monica Ford noticed the gift box in her hand and said with a helpless sigh, "Lulu, I’ve told you so many times. Just having you here is enough, you don’t need to bring a gift every time."
Lucy Perry sat on the sofa and placed the gift box on the coffee table. "My friend went traveling abroad, right? I had her bring back two sets of skincare, one for each of us."
"Well, I won’t be polite then," Monica Ford said with a laugh. "Sit for a bit, I’ll go wash some fruit for you. My younger brother sent over a lot of blueberries."
"It’s fine, Sister-in-law, don’t trouble yourself."
"You just sit. If you’re going to be so formal with me, I’m going to get angry!"
Lucy Perry quickly sat down obediently.
She watched Monica Ford’s retreating back, thinking that it was possible Renee and Cici’s communication had been flawed.
Cici was an animal, after all, and there was no way Renee could perfectly interpret an animal’s language every single time.
People sometimes make mistakes when translating a foreign language, let alone the language of animals.
As Lucy Perry thought of this, a sense of relief washed over her, as if a great weight had been lifted.
Monica Ford finished washing the fruit and sat on the sofa to chat with Lucy Perry about everyday things.
It was mostly about how great her sacrifices were as a housewife, and how difficult her days at home were.
"Sister-in-law, I know. It’s been hard on you all these years." Lucy Perry patted her hand reassuringly. "We’ve always felt that my brother was lucky to have married such a wonderful woman like you."
Monica Ford sighed. "A pity your brother doesn’t think so."
"What’s wrong?" Lucy Perry asked with concern. "Did you two fight again?"
Monica Ford opened her mouth to speak, but her phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the caller ID, her expression changing slightly, and rejected the call.
Meeting Lucy Perry’s gaze, Monica Ford explained with an awkward smile, "I signed Cindy up for a couple of trial dance classes a while ago, and now I get a lot of spam calls."
Hearing this, Lucy Perry asked with a smile, "Is Cindy going to learn to dance?"
"She’s a little interested." Monica Ford’s phone rang again. It was the same number as before.
After rejecting the call, she stood up, phone in hand, and said, "Lulu, you stay seated. I’m going to be busy in the kitchen for a bit."
"Okay." Lucy Perry watched her go into the kitchen, then looked down at her own phone and saw several new messages from her friend.
[Lulu, the more I think about it, the more I feel you should take that streamer’s words seriously.]
[I spent the afternoon binging her old streams. She’s never been wrong before.]
[Also, I’ve honestly always thought your sister-in-law was a bit strange, but I never dared to tell you, because I was afraid you wouldn’t want to hear it.]
[In any case, it’s always good to be careful.]
Lucy Perry stared intently at her phone screen, her brows knitting unconsciously. Her recently calmed heart felt as if a giant stone had been thrown into it, and the feelings of turmoil and unease washed over her once more.
"Lulu." Monica Ford came into the living room, having taken off her apron. "Something urgent came up and I have to step out for a bit."
Lucy Perry nodded. "Okay, Sister-in-law, you go ahead."
After Monica Ford left, Lucy Perry hesitated for a long time before finally getting up from the sofa.
She slowly walked to the door of her brother and sister-in-law’s bedroom. Her fingers wrapped around the cold metal doorknob, then immediately let go.
Lucy Perry closed her eyes and, in one swift motion, opened the door.
’Rather than sit here agonizing and second-guessing, I might as well find out the truth.’
Lucy Perry entered the bedroom and looked around the walk-in closet, but didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.
As she was about to leave, she casually pushed open a wardrobe door, and a glimpse of an inconspicuous canvas bag in the corner caught her eye.
Lucy Perry opened the canvas bag. Her gaze instantly darkened. Inside was a small Chanel briefcase.
She had bought one just like it when she was traveling abroad with a friend last year.
Lucy Perry frowned deeply as a thought flashed through her mind.
She put the canvas bag back where she found it and returned to the living room, her mind heavy with worry.
Knowing Monica Ford, there was no way she would buy a Chanel briefcase.
And even if she had, she would never just stuff it in a canvas bag and shove it in the corner of a wardrobe. The only explanation was...
