"That's so scary..."
After all, Long Xiwén was a young woman, and she couldn't help but move closer to Su Xuan after hearing Aunt Li's horrifying tale. Her leg brushed against his, and the warmth that passed between them made her feel considerably more at ease.
"The person was a woman with a hugely swollen belly," Aunt Li continued, her voice trembling as she recalled the frightful situation. "After she sat up, she just kept staring at me. Blood was flowing from her body, making a gushing sound! I screamed in terror and called for the new landlord, but by the time he arrived, there was nothing to be seen..."
"Do you recognize that woman?" Su Xuan asked. If Aunt Li recognized her, identifying the ghost would likely make it easier to determine the cause of the haunting.
"No... I don't recognize her." Aunt Li shook her head. She had no more patience for Su Xuan's "interrogation" and took out a key. "This is for the room the landlord arranged for you. It's on the second floor, turn left, the one at the very end. I'm leaving now."
After putting down the key, Aunt Li left, walking straight out the main door and away from the villa. She probably doesn't dare stay here any longer.
"Su Xuan, do you believe what she said?" Long Xiwén asked, glancing at the key in his hand.
"Half true, half false, I'd say." Holding the key in one hand and carrying his Ruyi Stick in the other, Su Xuan headed for the second floor.
"Which parts are true and which are false?" Long Xiwén asked, following him.
"I can't say for sure," Su Xuan replied, glancing back at her.
Long Xiwén fell silent. Everything should become clear after a thorough investigation.
However, Su Xuan didn't go straight into the room. Instead, he wandered around the second floor, then went up to the third for a look before finally returning to stand in front of their room on the second floor.
"Long Xiwén, you open the door," Su Xuan said, handing her the key.
"Why should I open it?!" Aunt Li's terrifying story was still fresh in her mind, and she feared she would be confronted with a dead person's face the moment the door opened.
"You're such a coward," Su Xuan laughed, taking the key and inserting it into the lock.
Long Xiwén instinctively reached for her waist, where she kept a gun.
CLICK!
The door swung open.
"AH!" Su Xuan suddenly leaned in and shouted right in Long Xiwén's ear. He startled her so badly she thought something had rushed out of the room. She shivered and drew her gun.
"Hahaha!" Su Xuan sauntered into the room.
"You're the worst!" Long Xiwén glared at him before following him inside.
After turning on the lights, Su Xuan surveyed the room. It was about twenty square meters with an en-suite bathroom, a double bed, and a wardrobe. The walls were covered in elegant wallpaper, a stark contrast to the luxurious decor of the living room.
He walked over to the desk for a look. It was completely clean, with nothing on it. When he pulled open the drawer, it was equally spotless. Perhaps this was a guest room, or maybe the new landlord simply hadn't had a chance to store their belongings yet. He then inspected the wardrobe, which was also empty.
"Su Xuan, what are you looking for?" Long Xiwén asked curiously.
"Why do you think you brought me here?" Su Xuan retorted, pursing his lips at her.
"You're looking for... a ghost?" Long Xiwén's mouth fell open.
"I doubt we'll find it by actively looking." Su Xuan had indeed been searching for their spooky target, but he hadn't found so much as a shadow. He figured the entity was intelligent and would only appear when people were completely off guard. The best course of action now was to wait.
"Can I see your gun?" Su Xuan's interest shifted to the weapon in Long Xiwén's hand. It seemed most guys were fascinated by such things, eager to handle a real one whenever they got the chance.
"I can't..." Long Xiwén was about to explain that showing her gun to others was against the rules, but Su Xuan suddenly snatched it from her. He handled it for a moment before tossing it back.
Resigned, Long Xiwén put the gun away.
"I need to take a shower," Su Xuan announced suddenly.
"Huh?" Long Xiwén exclaimed in surprise. "A shower? Here? Isn't that a bad idea? We're on a mission!" Her purpose in bringing him here was to solve the haunting.
"I'm not one of your people. I was just 'kidnapped' to help out, remember?" Su Xuan said as he walked into the bathroom and closed the door.
Long Xiwén sat on the double bed, sulking as she stared at the bathroom door. If we were really partners, he'd be a terrible one.
"Little Mosquito!" Su Xuan's voice called from the bathroom. "Don't you go getting any ideas and peeking at me, you hear? I know I'm handsome!"
"I... Why would I want to look at a scummy guy like you!" Long Xiwén's face flushed red. I haven't even dated anyone, and I'm certainly not some lovesick fool!
Immediately, the sound of splashing water echoed from the bathroom. But Su Xuan wasn't actually taking a shower.
"Hey, are you there?" Grinning, he spoke to the empty air beside him. "Can you help me find where the ghost is? I want to ask it about its grievances... or maybe just give it a couple of whacks with my stick."
These were his two goals for coming here. Helping a ghost would earn him incense energy; killing it would help his Ruyi Stick shed its rust. Both outcomes were beneficial for him. He was, of course, speaking to the lady in red. But there was only the sound of running water in the air, with no response from her.
"Alright, it seems you're too proud to help." Su Xuan shrugged. From what he knew of the lady in red, she usually only intervened when he was in real trouble, and right now, he wasn't in any danger at all.
"Hm?" Su Xuan's gaze suddenly landed on the bathroom mirror. The hot water he'd run had fogged up its surface. Through the mist, he faintly saw a silhouette. He swiped his hand across the glass to clear it.
There was nothing in the mirror but his own handsome face.
Still handsome as ever... Su Xuan smiled, stroking his chin. Suddenly, he heard Long Xiwén shriek from outside.
He hurriedly pushed the door open and stepped out to witness an unbelievable sight.
A gun. Long Xiwén's gun was floating in midair, its dark muzzle pointed straight at her.
Long Xiwén's face was pale, and she stood frozen to the spot, not daring to move. "Su Xuan, it flew off me by itself!" she cried out when she saw him.
"Interesting." Su Xuan took a bold step, positioning himself directly in front of Long Xiwén. He stared straight at the floating weapon and said five words: "If you've got guts, come at me!"
"Su Xuan..." Hearing those words, Long Xiwén's heart trembled with emotion. What an incredibly brave thing to do! Ordinary people are terrified of guns, paralyzed by the sight of one pointed at them! Even I, with all my special training, am scared right now! Yet Su Xuan dares to stand in front of it! If he were really my partner, he'd be the perfect, selfless partner a person could ask for!
The next second, the gun's trigger snapped down viciously, as if pulled by an invisible finger.
An image of Su Xuan collapsing to the floor, dead, flashed through Long Xiwén's mind.
