Perhaps it was the alcohol causing the restlessness.
Su Xuan couldn't sleep soundly while resting at the foot massage and wellness center.
Dongfang Hao, on the other hand, slept like a log, snoring like thunder.
"Brother Dongfang, you get some rest. I'm taking off."
Around seven in the evening, Su Xuan was fully awake. He nudged Dongfang Hao, but when the other man didn't stir, he left the wellness center by himself.
PHEW!
Once outside, he exhaled. There wasn't even a hint of alcohol on his breath.
It must be because my body has been repeatedly strengthened by the System, he thought. My ability to metabolize alcohol has become much stronger, too.
"Hello. Breathalyzer test."
But just as he slid into his car, before he could even put his hands on the steering wheel, a traffic policeman walked over and held a breathalyzer to his lips.
As it happened, this policeman had been on duty nearby all afternoon. He had personally seen Su Xuan and Dongfang Hao stumble out of the Grand Emperor Hotel and into the wellness center, completely drunk. Only a few hours had passed. How could Su Xuan possibly dare to drive?
He must be driving drunk!
PHEW!
Su Xuan blew into the breathalyzer.
The traffic officer was stunned.
The reading was normal. No signs of drunk driving!
"You haven't been drinking?" the traffic officer asked in surprise. "I clearly saw you and your friend..."
"I didn't drink," Su Xuan said with a smile, shaking his head. "I was just faking it to appease my friend."
With that, Su Xuan drove away.
"Did I misjudge him?" the traffic officer wondered aloud, scratching his head as he watched Su Xuan's car disappear into the distance.
By this time, the sky had already grown somewhat dark. A thick layer of clouds floated low overhead.
"Looks like we're in for a big storm tonight!"
Su Xuan had no intention of taking any more fares for the night. He planned to head home early, but just as he was approaching Houhai Street, his phone received a bizarre order.
But I'm sure I already logged out of the ride-hailing platform, right? What's going on?
Su Xuan opened the order details. The contact was blank and the destination wasn't displayed. It looked like a system bug.
Without giving it much thought, Su Xuan continued driving home, but then his phone suddenly rang.
Caller Name: Unknown.
"Hello...?" Su Xuan answered, offering a tentative greeting.
"Hello, Master? Why didn't you stop?" a girl's voice said through the phone. "I'm sure I saw you drive right past me!"
"Hm?"
Su Xuan paused and glanced at his rearview mirror. He spotted a shadowy figure standing by the side of the road, phone in hand, looking in his direction. If one didn't look closely, it would be easy to overlook her presence entirely.
Su Xuan was astonished.
How could I get an order from an entity like this? This is... a spectral order!
"The aura of a Super Order?"
Seeing no traffic cameras nearby, Su Xuan reversed his car.
The girl opened the door and got in, acting just like a normal person.
Incredible!
When Su Xuan checked his phone again, the destination had appeared: the entrance to a park.
"Master, please hurry. It's my birthday tonight, and my boyfriend is already waiting for me. I don't want to keep him waiting too long," the girl said as soon as she was settled.
Thankfully, after the events of the previous night, Su Xuan was now able to hear what such beings were saying. Otherwise, communication would have been difficult.
"Um..." Su Xuan glanced back at the girl. "Is your boyfriend... like you?"
The girl clearly wasn't human.
If her boyfriend can celebrate her birthday with her, he probably isn't human either.
"Oh!"
The girl actually looked surprised. "Master, you're incredible! You actually guessed! My boyfriend is just like me, and it's his birthday today too!"
"How lovely..." Su Xuan responded softly and started driving toward the destination.
Along the way, the girl told him many things.
"Master, my boyfriend and I are childhood sweethearts!
"We went to elementary, middle, and high school together, and we even got into the same university!
"After this birthday, we should be..."
The girl lowered her head, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.
Su Xuan glanced at her in the rearview mirror, guessing what her unfinished sentence implied. They were probably going to get married.
But... the girl wasn't human.
Su Xuan couldn't help but feel a pang of sorrow. Could it be this girl doesn't even know she's already... dead?
"Then... congratulations on your upcoming marriage!" Su Xuan offered his blessing.
"Hee hee, thank you, Master!" the girl said with a radiant smile.
Perhaps finding Su Xuan so approachable, the girl opened up.
"But we only officially got together in college. Once, I did poorly on an exam and was in a terrible mood. I just holed up in my dorm, refusing to come out. He called and said he was getting me a puppy, and he told me to meet him at a park entrance.
"I had always wanted a puppy, so I went to meet him.
"Master, can you guess what happened next?"
Su Xuan asked, "What happened? He didn't get you a puppy?"
The girl giggled. "He did. When I saw him, he just started barking at me himself."
Su Xuan was speechless.
The girl continued, "That was his way of confessing to me."
"He has a good sense of humor," Su Xuan remarked.
"Doesn't he? No matter how upset I am, he can always make me laugh. And after we graduated, he really did buy me a puppy."
Seeing a red light ahead, Su Xuan stopped the car. "And how's the dog now?"
The girl replied, "It's doing great! It's over two years old now."
The light turned green, and Su Xuan continued driving.
TAP... TAP...
Raindrops began to hit the windshield, and Su Xuan turned on the wipers.
Looking out the window, the girl mumbled to herself, "I wonder if he brought an umbrella."
About ten minutes later, they finally arrived at their destination.
"Thank you, Master!" the girl said sweetly. After getting out of the car, she cupped her hands over her head and ran toward the park entrance through the rain.
Yet Su Xuan saw that the raindrops weren't actually landing on her.
Driven by a flicker of curiosity, Su Xuan parked his car nearby.
There stood a man in a white shirt, holding an umbrella. In one hand he held a small cake, and in the other, the leash of a dog that was at least seven or eight years old.
The girl ran straight under the man's umbrella. She gazed at him, her face filled with happiness, not forgetting to glance down at the old dog and playfully tease it with the tip of her foot.
The man raised his wrist to check the time, then squatted down. He placed the cake on the ground and lit the candles. The candlelight flickered in the wind and rain. The man cupped his hands around the flame to shield it.
He murmured to himself, "It's our birthday again today. Come on, make a wish, blow out the candles, and we'll cut the cake!"
Clamping the umbrella between his neck and shoulder, the man cupped his hands under his chin and made a silent wish. The girl quickly did the same.
The man then blew out half of the candles.
The girl mimicked the action, but she had no breath to give. The wind blew the remaining candles out for her.
The man began to divide the cake.
"One piece for you.
"One piece for me.
"And one piece for Ah Wang."
He cut three pieces of cake.
He picked up his own piece and began to eat it, bite by bite. But before he had finished, he was clutching the old dog, sobbing uncontrollably...
