Cultivation Begins with Caring for Sister-in-law

Chapter 119: The Fall of the City

Boom!

A sulfurous smell of burning mercury used in alchemy rose with a puff of smoke, followed by shattered pottery jar fragments. The iron pieces and stones inside exploded outward, shooting in all directions, causing havoc around.

The violent explosion made General Sun's ears buzz, and just as he was about to speak, he suddenly felt his cheek heat up. A sticky sensation hit him; he gently wiped his face to find fresh blood flowing down, all the way to his neck.

It was the blood of a personal soldier who had died beside him, splashing onto his face.

"General, he... he's coming!" a personal soldier said to General Sun.

Taking advantage of the chaos caused by the pottery bomb explosion, when the Defense Army was in disarray, he charged directly toward General Sun.

Capture the leader first when capturing a thief.

With so many enemies, Chen Mo didn't think he could fight a thousand alone and could only aim to first decapitate their leader.

General Sun wasn't stupid; although he was confident his strength was superior, engaging in a one-on-one duel while having a numerical advantage was something only a fool would do.

"Life or death, kill!"

With a wave of General Sun's hand, many members of the Defense Army pressed forward with their blades.

Clad in black armor, Chen Mo charged like a leopard, taking a big step forward to get in front of two Defense Army soldiers. With one strike, his Sword Qi sliced through both soldiers' armor.

With a squelch, the living warriors were cleaved into two halves with a single stroke.

These Defense Army soldiers were not like refugees; they were coordinated. As Chen Mo split the two, countless long spears thrust toward him.

Bang!

But just as the spear tips were about to pierce Chen Mo, a purple aura surged from his body, enveloping him as if draping him in a sunrise cloak, blocking all the incoming spears.

"Come on!"

Chen Mo, wielding his blade, swung vertically in front of him, severing all the spears ahead. The spearmen, their faces changing drastically, were about to retreat when suddenly a whoosh sounded as a force like a mountain collapsed upon them.

They shrank their necks in unison, a cold shiver running down their spines. Amidst sparks flying, a blood mist rose, and several heads soared high.

With another swing, Chen Mo killed several more; holding his Tang Blade, he seemed unmatched, slaughtering men as if chopping melons and vegetables, covered head to toe in blood.

Wiping the blood from his face, Chen Mo sneered, "Who dares block me?"

Gulp!

General Sun gulped hard, eyes wide, as if seeing a ghost.

What had he seen? This person was actually a Middle-Grade Martial Artist...

General Sun's expression turned solemn, faced with a great enemy. As he retreated, he shouted, "Form ranks!"

"Hah!"

A squad of shield soldiers surged forth. When Chen Mo charged with his blade, dozens of ropes with iron hooks swung toward him from all directions.

Chen Mo's shoulders, hands, and feet were all hooked. Though the purple aura withstood it, preventing the hooks from piercing his flesh, each rope was held by more than a dozen men tugging tightly. Chen Mo was dragged to the ground, his Tang Blade falling, while more than a dozen spears behind the shield soldiers thrust toward him, and sword soldiers aimed to cut him down.

Chen Mo's expression changed, as Solar Purple Qi surged out again, breaking the hooks on his hands and shoulders. Rolling quickly on the ground, he evaded the angled spear thrusts and sword strikes, spiraling his body upwards. As he tried to stand, a pulling force tried to drag him down once again.

With a fierce look, he grabbed the iron hooks on his shoulders. His muscles bulged, veins popping as he spun in place using his feet, turning the twenty-some Defense Army soldiers grasping the tethering ropes into hammers, using them to smash into over a hundred people.

The formation of the Defense Army was completely disrupted by Chen Mo alone, prompting numerous soldiers to retreat in fright.

A resounding clang.

"The sluice gate is open!"

Suddenly, a cry of joy erupted from deep inside the city cave.

Chen Mo's eyes flashed with wild joy. Retrieving his Tang Blade from thin air, he quickly retreated, laughing, "Open the city gates, kill the corrupt officials!"

"Don't retreat, stop them." General Sun, cutting down a retreating soldier, tried to force them back into position.

Boom!

As the heavy city gates were pulled open, the Divine Brave Guard, along with the refugees rushing toward the gates upon hearing the explosion, shouted as they stormed into the city.

Thump, thump, thump!

"Kill, slay the corrupt officials!"

In the stillness of the deep night, a muffled drumbeat resounded from outside the city. Torches were lit one by one, accompanied by a fierce battle cry.

Han Wu, leading his group, planted over a thousand torches into the ground, waving a torch as they shouted hoarsely, creating the illusion of thousands of troops.

"Kill the corrupt officials, kill the treacherous merchants!"

The refugees storming into the city shouted even louder than the Divine Brave Guard.

In a flash, General Sun's face turned deathly pale, with beads of cold sweat rolling down his cheeks.

He understood; it's a major crisis.

Inhaling deeply, General Sun drew his Great Saber, shouting, "Brothers, defend Ping Court, now is the time, fight with me!"

But as the saying goes, repeated attempts to arise will eventually exhaust one's strength.

The Defense Army, already intimidated by Chen Mo's extraordinary methods, saw their morale drastically reduced. Upon seeing the horde streaming in from outside the city, they promptly turned to flee in terror.

They were indeed formally trained, but they were still human.

And being human, they could feel fear.

Earlier, when dealing with Chen Mo alone, despite his ferocity, they had worked up the courage to charge.

But now, in their panic, seeing so many villagers storming in with blades and guns, they had no courage left to resist.

General Sun knew that in this situation, he was powerless to change the tide, and so he too fled.

"Kill!"

The refugees, initially fearful of death, suddenly found courage in this situation, transforming into peerless warriors and charged forward, even pursuing the Defense Army to kill.

The refugees had no formal organization; while under the command of the Divine Brave Guard, they followed orders, but now it had devolved into a chaotic brawl.

The screams, smashing noises, and cries of pain echoed together, escalating intensely, reaching a chaotic peak.

The Defense Army was completely routed, scattering in all directions.

Chen Mo furrowed his brow, shouting, "Zhang River, Lu Yuan, Han Wu."

"At your command."

"Take your units and follow me to attack the Government Office. The rest of the soldiers, go after the fleeing Defense Army. If they surrender, don't kill them."

There's no point in further killing when no one resists.

"Understood."

Chen Mo led nearly three hundred men, fiercely charging toward the Government Office.

...

The Defense Army didn't consist merely of that group; there were nearly a thousand more resting in the barracks. After all, it was late at night; not all the Defense Army could be out on duty, they needed shifts.

General Sun reached the barracks, roused all the resting Defense Army soldiers, and led them to defend the Government Office.
