Wasteland Commander

Chapter 114: Armor Assault

The zombie horde advanced rapidly, shaking the earth.

Wang Huining was furious, but he didn't expect the zombies to rush to the gates of Dawn Army City all at once.

The Dawn Army was on high alert, and with such a strong city, conquering it in a short period was nothing but a dream.

However, he was convinced that he would win, as the disparity in numbers was overwhelmingly large. No matter how much the Dawn Army resisted, it was nothing more than a desperate struggle.

The number of zombies charging at the forefront was as many as twenty thousand.

Their purpose was to serve as cannon fodder.

They were meant to rush to the city walls, pile up their bodies, and build a road to the top of the walls for the following troops.

Roaring, the zombies advanced, already within a thousand meters of the walls!

But Ye Fan did not give the order to fire.

No one questioned Ye Fan's decision; the Dawn Army always absolutely obeyed orders.

Wang Huining watched coldly from afar, eager to see what tricks Ye Fan still had up his sleeve.

Would he use cannons and rockets to continue with the bombardment?

If that were the case, Wang Huining was confident that he could exhaust Ye Fan's resources and bankrupt him altogether.

But the scene that followed overturned his understanding once again.

********

Within the advancing zombie horde, a violent blaze suddenly erupted!

Dozens of zombies around the explosion collapsed, with a few broken ones crawling back up, while others would never rise again.

This was just the beginning. One explosion after another began to resound outside Dawn City.

When the first zombie stepped on a landmine and exploded, Wang Huining realized he had underestimated Ye Fan.

It was clear that the opponent had made extremely thorough preparations here.

With one landmine exploding after another, each blast would bring down an area of zombies.

Wang Huining wished he could tell the zombies to watch their steps, but those wooden-headed creatures couldn't comprehend such complex instructions.

"Step on them, step on them. Let these zombies trigger all the mines; they're cannon fodder anyway."

"I have three hundred thousand subordinates. Let's see how many landmines you have."

If the entire area under Dawn City were full of landmines, that would be one thing, but Wang Huining quickly noticed a group of zombies advancing swiftly without encountering any mines.

"There's no landmine on the central road!"

"Advance through the center! Assault the gates!"

He ordered a group of zombies to follow and move along the central road.

This fell right into Ye Fan's trap.

When the zombie horde entered the firearms' range, the Dawn Army, which had been waiting on the city walls, started shooting.

Zhongjing ordered them to open fire, and the sound of the zombies' roars was drowned out by gunfire.

Countless tongues of flame spewed from the city walls, with a heavy rain of bullets pouring down!

Tasked with defending the south gate was the second battalion of the Dawn Army.

The soldiers of this second battalion were all new recruits, produced by Ye Fan not long ago.

In their No-Star state, their shooting skills weren't excellent.

But now, even if their marksmanship wasn't precise, it didn't matter. A large group of zombies was concentrated on the central road. Just shooting in that direction guaranteed hitting something.

On both sides, some zombies continually stepped on the exploding mines, while the central road became a slaughterhouse.

No matter how wide the road was, it was limited; the zombies there were nothing but targets.

The bullets from rifles and light machine guns were manageable, but those heavy machine guns mounted on the city walls and turrets were too brutal.

The packed zombie horde was like endless skewers of candied hawthorn; a stream of bullets didn't just hit one but swept across an entire area.

Zombie after zombie fell. In this fan-shaped barrage of dense firepower, a bullet was bound to become your terminator.

Whenever the pile of zombie corpses grew too high, Rocket Launcher Warriors on the wall would fire.

A single rocket would blast, scattering the zombie bodies and clearing the path again.

When the new recruits on the wall ran out of bullets, they immediately retreated left and right, while other soldiers stepped in to replenish them.

At twelve, the bullets would refresh, so there was no need to waste the reserve ammunition now.

In this frenzied slaughter, in just half an hour, over ten thousand zombies lay dead on the central road!

Including those blown up by landmines, the zombie losses had reached twenty thousand!

Yet the zombie horde hadn't managed to approach the Dawn Army's walls.

This brought some calm to Wang Huining, whose head had been clouded by rage.

This wouldn't work.

All the zombies crowding together to advance in such dense formations were nothing but targets for the Dawn Army to massacre.

To pose a threat to the city, the zombies needed to spread out across a wide area and charge the walls.

The only solution seemed to be to have the zombies clear the mines.

He ceased the foolish advance through the middle, initiating the second wave of assault.

Learning from his mistakes, this time he dispatched groups of a thousand zombies to advance sporadically, specifically to trigger the mines.

Meanwhile, the large horde of zombies remained outside the minefield, waiting for most of the mines to detonate before charging.

And so, zombies were continuously picked off while stepping on the mine-triggering routes. However, waves of them kept coming. Each mine explosion would billow dust into the air, obscuring the city-bound warriors' view, and hence, their efficiency wasn't bad.

Watching as they approached the city walls with minimal cost, Wang Huining grinned, sensing a glimpse of victory.

Beneath Dawn City, the main gate burst open!

The grin on Wang Huining's face froze.

Three Fierce Dragon Off-road Vehicles and one Iron Armor quickly charged out!

Each vehicle was armed with heavy machine guns.

"Ye Fan, are you putting out all of your assets now? Come, come on, if these jeeps dare to rush over here into the horde, don't expect to return! My Armored Zombies can easily overturn your jeeps."

But before Wang Huining could celebrate, another four armored vehicles appeared!

"They even have armored vehicles!"

Wang Huining couldn't comprehend how the Dawn Army managed to obtain such brand-new armored vehicles.

However, he wasn't worried; while armored vehicles are strong, King Kong Zombies can still flip them over.

These colossal zombies fear no firearms, not heavy machine guns nor sniper rifles, capable of piercing its iron-forged armor.

Just as he was preparing to deploy King Kong into battle, more vehicles emerged from the Dawn Army.

Tanks!

The appearance of the two grass-green tanks sparked cheers from the direction of Dawn City.

The Dawn Army was overwhelmingly strong, equipped with such modern weaponry, victory seemed within reach.

Four jeeps, four battering rams, plus two tanks, boldly charged out of the city, arriving at the edge of the minefield.

They spread out in an arc along the highway, with the tanks in front and other vehicles on the sides.

All ten vehicles had one thing in common: they all mounted machine guns!

Ten heavy machine guns and anti-aircraft guns began firing simultaneously!

The horde of zombies gathered at the front, waiting for the mines to clear before charging, was immediately decimated.

This torrential bulletstorm was unstoppable except for King Kong Zombies on Wang Huining's side.

However, the King Kong Zombies had retreated with him, too far to counter the attack immediately.

The zombies fell like mown grass, being relentlessly harvested by heavy machine guns.

The zombies at the front couldn't retreat either, as their comrades blocked them from behind.

Those two tanks did not only fire their guns; their 105mm main cannons fired continuously as well.

Shells targeted dense areas of zombies, where they landed, massive fireballs erupted.

Wang Huining ordered the zombies to charge forward, but the firepower from ten heavy machine guns was overwhelming.

Basically, however many went forward, that many died.

The only way to attack this armored convoy was to flank from both sides and encircle them.

But the mines on both sides hadn't been cleared yet.

Small groups of zombies couldn't clear them, while soldiers on the walls continuously sniped; only overwhelming numbers could force a charge.

Wang Huining's eyes turned slightly red.

How despicable!

Whoever thought of such a sinister strategy was forcing his main force to step on mines.

He had no other choice.

With no other options, Wang Huining waved his hand, and the zombie horde began to advance.

Braving the bullet rain to step on the mines.

There might not be a more hellish task than this.

Wang Huining could only hope that the heavy machine gun's ammo would run out quickly.

But apparently, the sustained combat capability of those heavy machine guns exceeded his expectations.

Those armored vehicles and jeeps had already killed numerous zombies before, almost reaching their mid-level promotion.

The dense formation allowed them to level up rapidly; before the bullets ran out, the "no-stars" upgraded to "One-Star," and "One-Star" even to "Two-Star."

The ammunition was refilled, and the relentless "da-da-da" continued.

Wang Huining's mine-clearing operation was extremely difficult.

Under the dual ravage of machine guns and mines, Wang Huining's zombie army lost over fifty thousand by the time they reached beneath Dawn City!

The ten combat vehicles exhausted all their ammunition and artillery, retreating with honor before the zombie army could close in.

Except for the two T5 tanks, which were too expensive to upgrade, all other combat vehicles had leveled up.

Outside the city, zombie corpses already littered the entire Outer City District.

Wang Huining's zombie numbers reduced by one-sixth without even reaching the walls.

This inflamed his heart with rage.

But he believed the upcoming battle would be different.

Because most of the mines had been cleared, the following would be the most intense fortress defense battle.

This time, Wang Huining deployed the Mutated Zombies.

Ordinary zombies led the charge, with Mutated Zombies mixed within, ready to attack the walls at any moment.

"Go!"

A roar burst from his lips, and the zombies began their all-out assault!

The surging horde flooded to the base of the walls.

They attacked the walls futilely, but the 1.5-meter-thick reinforced concrete walls weren't something ordinary zombies could breach.

Fierce gunfire rained down from the watchtowers, from the walls, creating a bloody spectacle below.

In just five minutes, zombie corpses piled nearly two meters high against the walls!

These were Wang Huining's arranged cannon fodder, used to build a path to scale the walls with their bodies.

Once the zombie pile reached two meters, Wang Huining's assault teams took the stage!

A large group of Armored Zombies hunched over, with stones or similar objects on their heads for protection, advanced through the rain of bullets.

On the back of each Armored Zombie was an Agile Zombie.

He intended for the Armored Zombies to throw the Agile Zombies over the walls!

Watching the Iron Armor close in step by step, Wang Huining's emotions surged.

The Dawn Army's Ye Fan had just unleashed frantic firepower, utilizing rockets and tanks; conventional firearms couldn't pose a lethal threat to the head-protected Iron Armor.

Now it was his turn to strike.

If this move succeeded, Dawn City might be breached!

It was now 11:45 AM.
