Hidden Moth

Chapter 71: The Story of a Crab (Part 2)

In this kind of environment, eating seems to taste particularly good, and the crabs themselves are delicious. Gao Xue'e asked, "Shall we get some wine?"

He Kao: "Then I'll have a pound, what about you?"

Gao Xue'e: "Let's get two pounds in total. I'll drink with you."

When the two pounds of wine were served, He Kao then said, "Why don't you drink it? I'll just watch. We still need someone to drive, you know, there's no way to call a driver here!"

So, in the end, only Gao Xue'e drank, and she did indeed want to relax completely.

Gao Xue'e's drinking capacity was decent, at least better than Huang Xiaopang. But at company dinners and such occasions, she almost never drank, always claiming she didn't drink, couldn't drink, was a bit allergic... This way, she avoided quite a few troubles.

How did He Kao know Gao Xue'e could handle alcohol? Because at this moment, he watched her down a pound of yellow wine, with just a bit of sweat on her nose and a flushed face, she looked somewhat excited, showing no signs of being drunk.

This was in an outdoor shed by the lake; with the breeze blowing under the sunset, if she couldn't drink, she would probably faint right there, and He Kao would have to carry her away like he did that night.

After finishing the first bottle, Gao Xue'e naturally wanted to open the second one, but He Kao immediately reached out to stop her. He didn't say that she would be drinking too much if she continued, but instead, he smiled and said, "You can't drink both bottles, save one for me to take home."

Gao Xue'e smiled happily too, "Okay, I'll leave this one for you to drink at home. Any more and I'd be drunk."

The wine was drunk quickly, but the crabs were eaten a bit slowly. After finishing one bottle, only one female crab was cracked. Gao Xue'e just opened the lid of another male crab when He Kao suddenly reached out to stop her, "Don't eat this one!"

Gao Xue'e said in a coquettish tone, "Why, do you want to take this one home too? There are fresh ones to buy and take away, why must you have mine?"

He Kao explained, "I'm not stopping you from eating, but this crab has something wrong."

Gao Xue'e: "What's wrong, is it poisonous?"

He Kao actually nodded: "Sort of, it will definitely upset your stomach if you eat it."

Gao Xue'e looked at the crab with some doubt, then bent down to sniff it carefully, "It does seem a bit different from the one before, but it shouldn't be dead, why can't it be eaten?"

He Kao: "Do you trust me? If you do, don't eat it, and ask the boss to bring another male crab."

Gao Xue'e: "Alright then."

If this crab has a problem, why not ask the boss to replace it, instead of buying another one? Because they can't prove it!

Gao Xue'e chose to trust He Kao, but the stall owner won't admit a loss.

So Gao Xue'e didn't argue and followed He Kao's suggestion, dealing with wise people is comfortable because she quickly understood the cause and effect.

So-called poison is something that may harm the body; spoiled food counts as a type of poison. If a hairy crab dies, it certainly can't be eaten. But the boss selling crabs in such a place definitely wouldn't steam dead crabs.

That crab, to the naked eye, seemed fine, it should have been steamed alive, even presenting with a plump, yellow state, but He Kao felt something was off.

If someone ate it, chances are they'd get a stomach ache.

Poison Detection Skill is a Tier One Technique of the Hidden Moth Sect and is the basis of Communication Skill. It's not a method to identify poisons per se but a Perception Ability that detects whether something is harmful personally—this is poison.

He Kao hasn't specifically spent time studying Poison Detection Skill, but having become a Tier One Stalker, he inherently possesses some of the ability. Since he feels the crab is wrong, he won't let Gao Xue'e take the risk.

It's not because the crab wasn't fresh, and poisoning it by the boss is even more unlikely; perhaps the crab was contaminated or infected with some bacteria... this is unclear.

He Kao could undoubtedly prove it, yet unfortunately, he can't do so. Theoretically the best way to prove it would be to use a full set of biochemical laboratory equipment for on-site testing, but obviously, this isn't feasible.

The only "possible" scenario on site would be for Gao Xue'e to eat it, and should there really be an issue, it would prove he was right, but would he do that?

People like to talk about the cost of trial and error; actually, the "cost of trialing right" in many things is quite high!

Like how He Kao already guessed that Huang Xiaopang is the Hidden Moth, yet he can't and won't prove he's right, having only acknowledged this fact internally.

Now, he could only ask Gao Xue'e whether she believed in him? It sounds like a compliance test, but He Kao truly doesn't have such intentions.

Sometimes, those facing the dilemma of the "cost of trialing right" can mistaken for a compliance test.

Gao Xue'e didn't eat that one crab but spent extra money to buy another. She looked at him with a giggle and asked, "Is this male crab okay to eat?"

He Kao nodded with a smile, "Certainly, this one's fine."

Watching Gao Xue'e savor the crab, He Kao inexplicably thought of his eldest aunt, Zhou Yan, not because there's something similar between them but because they're so different.

For most of the time, besides his grandfather, his eldest aunt was the closest person to him. Although there were some unpleasantness, deep down, He Kao couldn't hold resentment against his aunt and her family, always remembering their kindness.

One of the key reasons being that He Kao never felt any malice from his aunt.

His aunt wasn't bad to him, just unintelligent; otherwise, she wouldn't use his house as a warehouse to secretly store flammable and explosive dangerous goods, thinking she could evade police investigation.

If today the person eating crabs with him was replaced by his aunt, communication surely wouldn't flow smoothly.

With his aunt's temper, she certainly would insist on him explaining why the crab couldn't be eaten? And would demand a free replacement from the boss because he said the crab had a problem.

Then He Kao might get a scolding from the boss.

The outcome would be chaos, with his aunt defiantly eating the crab; if she really got sick, she'd blame He Kao for not clarifying and would demand compensation from the boss...

In short, things would turn chaotic.

What is deduction? This is deduction! It may not be some divine technique, merely He Kao knowing his aunt all too well, having witnessed similar cases many times.

If today the person across was his aunt, how would He Kao choose? He wouldn't say anything, just watch her eat the crab! Because saying so would not only be ineffective but also incur high costs of trialing right.

The average person may find it difficult to do this.

So, his uncle once said, He Kao is a good kid, just too deep in thought.

But if the harm of eating that crab was severe, even life-threatening, what would He Kao do? He'd find an excuse to take it away and secretly dispose of it… at the cost of a scolding.

Legend has it some worldly wise men act bizarrely and incomprehensibly, perhaps for similar reasons?

Though He Kao isn't floating with such pride, having just become a Tier One Stalker, he wouldn't claim to be a worldly wise man, he just watched Gao Xue'e eat crab, his thoughts drifting somewhat far.

From Gu Lake to Pugang Town, driving barely takes over an hour, He Kao thought to ask how tomorrow's work would go, but as he turned his head, found Gao Xue'e sleeping, maybe because she drank.
