Chapter 68 – Yeti

Matthew didn't wait for the Yeti in front of him to act. He drew his gun and fired immediately, though his bullets were dealing almost no damage to it. He then drew his sword and prepared to close combat as the Yeti kept coming forward in fast paces.

Behind Matthew, he could hear Erin's lightning bolts. They were also not strong enough to deal any significant damage to the Yeti that appeared behind them.

Faralynn was holding Robert with one hand while her other hand had her sword up ready to face the Yeti in close quarters.

Matthew didn't want to rely on the demonic mana again, he was trying to avoid using it so much. Although he could reliably control his dark desires by now, given he already had 23 points in his Mind stats and plenty of experience, he was afraid what it meant for his soul to allow the demonic influence take control of him so often.

However he had no choice now. Faralynn and Erin might've been able to deal with a Yeti themselves, but not while protecting an unconscious person.

Matthew took off his eye patch again. His eye shined bright red. The next shot hit the Yeti in front of him on its left shoulder taking a painful roar from the monster. A bullet hole was now deep on its shoulder showing how much more powerful Matthew was under the demonic mana.

The hurt Yeti then sprinted forward taking more two bullets to the chest before reaching Matthew and trying to hit him with its claw. Matthew dodged with ease and slashed the beast's arm with his sword before putting another three bullets on its chest.

The Yeti was surprisingly resilient. Even though it was severely hurt, it was still agile enough to try to claw Matthew with its other hand. An attack that Matthew was also able to dodge, but the icy cave floor made him lose his footing and fall on his butt on the ground.

It was the opportunity his enemy needed. It kicked Matthew square on the chest making him fly backwards and taking the air out of his lungs.

Matthew landed close to Erin that was using her skills in conjunction with her staff to create a magical electric wall keeping the second Yeti at bay. That Yeti tried trespassing it twice but recoiled after being shocked. However, it wasn't an absolute unintelligent monster. It walked backwards and took out a huge block of ice from one of the walls and threw it at the electric wall making it fade.

"Matt?!" Erin exclaimed seeing him laying by her feet. She then looked left and saw the first Yeti getting close jumping forward like a wild gorilla charging its prey. She had time to slow it down with a lightning bolt to its face while Matthew fought to recover his breath.

Those Yeti didn't seem to have high Vitality, but their HP and their Strength was way above the average for a level 15 monster.

Faralynn was in trouble. Having to carry Robert with one hand and to defend herself with the sword on her other hand, she couldn't last long fighting that beast in close quarters. If it wasn't for her superb magical sword, she wouldn't even be able to harm the creature.

Matthew recovered in time from the kick on his chest to sit down and put another 5 bullets on the Yeti in front of him finally making it move like it was hurt. That Yeti, however, seemed to notice he couldn't approach Matthew easily. When Matthew took his time to reload his gun, the Yeti took a deep breath and blew a cone of frost air on them.

Erin was able to put a solid mana wall in front of them to hold back the freezing air, but that also put an obstacle in front of Matthew that could not shoot the Yeti through the wall.

At the same time, Faralynn screamed letting Robert fall to the floor when the Yeti she was facing cut her arm with its claw. The wound was deep, but it didn't hit any major arteries, despite bleeding profusely. On the same movement, the Yeti tried to bite her waist, but its teeth stopped on her breastplate only being able to bend the metal slightly.

Hearing the scream, Matthew got up almost slipping on the ice again and sprinted towards Faralynn deciding not to shoot because the beast still had her in its mouth trying to gnaw at her waist.

Matthew got the beast from behind stabbing its back with brute strength. At the same time his sword plunged on the Yeti's flesh, it screamed and slapped Matthew with the back of its hand sending him flying towards a wall and leaving his sword inside the creature.

Erin was busy maintaining the mana wall that the most injured Yeti was trying to bring down with powerful strikes. Those creatures were so strong, that Erin had to pour most of her mana just to hold the wall.

Faralynn managed to pierce the Yeti in front on her on its foot, her sword trespassing the flesh and pinning it to the ground. That gave her time to drag Robert away from the monster while it removed the sword from its foot.

With both Faralynn and Robert away from the Yeti, Matthew, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall he was thrown into, drew his other gun and, shooting with both guns, put 30 bullets on that Yeti. It stumbled as if drunk, but not yet dead. Matthew then let the guns fall to the floor and got up in a swift movement sprinting forward drawing his second sword and slashing the Yeti's throat with a wide swing.

The beast groaned sadly before disappearing in a mist of mana.

Matthew smiled, but that happiness was short-lived. As soon as that Yeti was destroyed, Erin fell to the floor almost out of mana. The other Yeti then destroyed the mana wall in front of it with ease, since the girl wasn't supporting it with her mana anymore. In a single jump, it fell over Erin and opened its mouth wide.

Matthew tried to get to her on time, but was too slow. The beast's mouth closed around Erin's head with a crunching sound.

"ERIN!" Faralynn screamed in horror taking her hands over her face.

Matthew vision went red. He screamed an unnatural scream while he ran towards his friend.

Before the Yeti could fully open its mouth, that still encircled Erin's head, Matthew was already on top of it swinging his sword with no technique like a baseball bat directly on the Yeti's face making it blow in a mist of mana.

Erin only had 11 Vitality and 5 HP. A bite like that on her head was surely to kill her.

Matthew's demonic mana was out of control. The rage he was feeling was unbearable. He needed to kill something. To kill someone.

He refused to look at Erin's body. He didn't want to see her deformed face. Just imagining how she looked was enough to make his blood boil.

Matthew's eyes were impossibly wide. His hand trembling from the strength he gripped the handle of his sword. Who's fault was it?

He looked at Faralynn who was walking slowly towards Erin's body. It wasn't hers. Even in that state Matthew could never harm her.

He looked at Robert who was unconscious on the floor. It was his. He was the idiot who let himself be captured by the Yetis. It was his party's fault for begging them to save this idiot's ass.

He needed to die. His party needed to die. Die for Erin.

Matthew's reversed the grip of the sword on his hand readying it for a stab. He walked stomping the floor, moving slowly and precisely in Robert's direction. He was going to make him suffer.

When Matthew passed through Faralynn with murder in his eyes walking towards the man on the floor, she grabbed his arm.

"What are you doing?" Faralynn asked with her face covered in fear.

"Let me go, Lynn." Matthew ordered with a tone implying a threat.

"What are you doing?" Faralynn asked again tightening her grip on his arm.

"I'm going to kill them." Matthew hissed.

"Who?"

"Those idiots that made Erin die."

"But Erin isn't dead." Faralynn said pointing to the girl on the floor.

Matthew refused to look. Too scared to see the face of his friend deformed by the bite.

"Look Matthew." Faralynn ordered him tugging his body by the arm to face Erin on the floor.

Only then he dared look.

Erin was laying still on the floor. Breathing lightly. Her face was intact. But she was unconscious.

"She's alive?" Matthew asked incredulous.

"She is, Matt." Faralynn said bringing her other hand to his face and caressing his cheek tenderly. "She is well. Calm down. Please."

Matthew looked Faralynn in her purple eyes as if he was waking up from a dream. He realized his thoughts. Realized he was about to kill a classmate.

He let his sword fall to the ground.

He used Purification on himself until it hurt his very soul.

In the back of his mind he started to hear the song the imps were singing in hell again.

Tears flooded his eyes as he dropped to the ground on his knees.

"Lynn…" He started to cry hugging Faralynn's waist and pressing his face on her breastplate. "Help me."
