Chapter 59 – Dullahan and Blue Flames

Dyzan and Harlynn attacked the Dullahan together. They couldn't let it throw another fireball like that. They traded blows taking turns between attacking and defending all while keeping their distance from the flames.

The Dullahan itself was masterfully defending each attack, measuring each step, getting closer and closer when he could.

Pyrzan, who was still standing where she brought Orpheu to be healed, noticing the predicament her allies were in, tried to walk forward, but was stopped by a sharp pain on her side. She fell to the ground in one knee gasping from the pain. The wound the Dullahan inflicted on her was now black as coal. Her blood oozing out also deep black. The blackness now spreading through her body.

Pyrzan tried to get up, to ignore the pain, but couldn't. She was feverish and having difficulty breathing. Her eyes were fixed on her allies. She was steadfast in helping them, but the unholy mana poisoning that came from the miasma surrounding the dungeon and the wound inflicted by the Dullahan, was already deep into her blood stream.

Matthew noticed that when she opened her robes and lifted her shirt to look at the wound. He approached her and, without asking for permission, touched her bare torso close to the wound. Pyrzan protested, but didn't move.

"What are you doing?" She asked annoyed.

"Saving your live this time." Matthew responded using Purification on her. He did it slowly, like Professor Claude taught him, which prolonged his touch on her making her flush from the contact.

"Are you done?" Pyrzan asked now masking her embarrassment under her angry voice.

"Just a second." He said asking someone nearby for a healing potion that was produced quickly from the inventory of one of the students.

Matthew poured the potion over the wound closing the cut and gave her the rest to drink.

"We're out of mana potions." He said. "Be careful there."

Pyrzan just nodded and got up. The sharp pain was gone and her skin was back to normal. Her body was still a bit feverish, but it improved greatly. She looked at Dyzan and Harlynn. They both had ulcers and blackening on their skins. All the students around, but Matthew, had them.

They've been in the miasma without protection too long. It was starting to take a toll on their bodies. Harlynn, specially, looked very sluggish.

The remaining elven archer shot her last arrow and charged forward drawing a pair of knives to help Dyzan and Harlynn. Pyrzan also went forward and, from the back of the three elves who were engaged in melee combat with the Dullahan, hit it with another magic missile.

The Dullahan took two steps back when hit by the magic missile and Dyzan didn't miss the opportunity. The elven leader stabbed the undead knight on its hip making it lose balance and fall on one knee on the ground.

In a surprisingly quick sprint, the elven archer got behind the Dullahan and found a gap on its armor near the shoulders plunging her daggers on each one.

While the flames on the undead knight's head trembled high in pain, Harlynn came down with his axe hitting it heavily on the back. A massive clatter of metal on metal filled the room. The Dullahan's armor bent out of shape, the straps that held it on place broke making the entire left side of the armor fall open.

Dyzan tried to stab the undead knight on its open chest, but missed. The Dullahan jumped backwards, getting away from his attackers. It didn't give them time to react, as soon as it landed on the floor, it threw another fireball at them.

Pyrzan managed to contain the blast of the fireball with a mana wall protecting her allies.

The elven archer, who was closer to the Dullahan now, charged in aiming the exposed torso of the undead, but it was quicker than her. He deflected her attack and, on the same movement, hit her with his shoulder. When she stumbled back, the Dullahan came forward with an upward slash taking her arm by her elbow and the left side of her face from her chin all the way to her eye. Her wounds immediately catching on fire.

The archer screamed high with the pain. When Dyzan finally reached both of them and with a series of thrusts made the Dullahan back off from the wounded elf, Pyrzan quickly teleported bringing the elven archer to the students for healing and moved back to the front.

The deformed face of the elf brought a gruesome feeling to those who saw it up close. Healing her and purifying the flames came only from those not faint of heart. The elf, herself, was now unconscious from the intensity of the pain and was also out of combat.

Dyzan and the Dullahan kept trading blows. The undead knight was masterfully keeping Harlynn behind the elf leader, stepping sideways every time the axe wielding elf side stepped himself. Always keeping the 3 of them in a line, in a way it would only have to face Dyzan in combat while Harlynn could not approach unless he passed over his leader.

Pyrzan aimed carefully, while the fight was heated so she wouldn't hit her allies, and threw another magic missile on the undead knight. The Dullahan tumbled a bit, but did not fall. Dyzan was quick to hit it then. Missing a stab, he quickly shifted his position and stroke his opponent with the blunt end of his weapon.

That opened way for Harlynn to finally be able to approach the Dullahan and swing his axe with brutal strength. But, this time, the undead knight was ready for him. It deflected Harlynn's blow with its sword and grabbed the elf with his other hand by the throat.

While the axe wielding elf gasped for air, the Dullahan concentrated its flames on the hand that was holding him. Harlynn's head was soon engulfed on a ball of fire.

When the Dullahan released him, he didn't fall to the floor. He ran around desperately trying to douse the flames on his head with his hands, but all it did was to also engulf his hands on fire. He could not see anymore, since his eyes burned down with the flames. Each breath brought the flames inside his lungs that were now filling with his own blood making it harder to breath.

If his HP stat wasn't very high, he would be already dead.

It was Matthew that got to him, since Pyrzan was busy aiding Dyzan fight the Dullahan while Harlynn ran around like a headless chicken.

Matthew used his Purification skill on the burning elf to extinguish the unholy flames. Then he dragged him, who was recognizable under all the burnt skin of his face, towards the students. Harlynn moaned in pain while he struggled to breathe.

"That's the last healing potion." A student said to Matthew while he poured it over the elf's head. "I don't think he'll survive that."

"I know. But he thought for us. He deserve that we at least try." Matthew said pitying Harlynn.

At the same time Matthew helped Harlynn, Pyrzan managed to hit another magic missile on the Dullahan shifting him to the side opening his left side. Dyzan didn't miss this time. His spear pierced true through the open side of the undead knight's armor going deep into its chest.

Enduring the pain, the Dullahan held the elf's spear inside, not letting him to pull it back. And then it thrust his sword on Dyzan's chest. The elf stumbled back with a hole on the middle of his body. Blue flames burning his flesh.

Pyrzan tried to stop the Dullahan's next attack, but she was too weak to raise a mana shield powerful enough to stop the undead knight's blade.

Soon Dyzan's head flew from his neck.

It was all over now. Pyrzan was a mage. She had no chance to defeat the Dullahan without support from the front.

Orpheu tried to get up. But his insides were too hurt for him to move. The pain preventing him from acting.

When the Dullahan's blade fell on Pyrzan, she managed to protect herself with a mana shield, stronger than the one she used to shield Dyzan since it was near herself. But the shield shattered with the force of the blow.

A second shield also shattered and the residual force brought Pyrzan to the ground.

Just when the Dullahan lifted his sword to kill the elf woman, a bullet pierced its unarmed part of his chest.

It was Matthew with a borrowed gun.

"Everyone! Shoot it down! Use everything you have left! It's weak enough for us to harm it!" He screamed.

Out of desperation, no student hesitated. Everyone who had a gun or a bow opened fire on the undead knight. Matthew was right. Its Vital Shield was almost gone now, its armor was damaged and its mana was low. The barrage of arrows and bullets held him in place long enough for Pyrzan to teleport away.

Matthew, then, grabbed Orpheu's katana, which the professor was receptive on giving him. A weapon Matthew saw that was powerful enough to make a difference. Imbuing mana on it felt different than on regular weapons. Like his mana flowed more naturally.

"Pyrzan." Matthew said getting close to the elf. "I'm charging as soon as we run out of ammo. I don't have much mana, though. You'll have to destroy it before I run out."

"I don't have much more either." The elf said. "But I think I can do it."

Matthew's left eye glowed red as he allowed the demonic mana to take over him. A thick miasma surrounded his body.

When the gunfire died down, he ran at full speed towards the Dullahan. A desperate attempt of ending the fight.

Pyrzan covered the Dullahan on a barrage of magic missiles keeping it occupied defending the blasts.

Matthew then got near enough to stab the undead knight's bare part of its chest, but Matthew only had one hand and no experience with that weapon. The Dullahan deflected his stab with ease and kicked Matthew square on the face with the sole of its metal boot.

When the undead knight's blade came down upon Matthew to end his life, a magic missile from Pyrzan hit the sword protecting him. She then teleported right in front of the Dullahan, put her hand on its flesh and cast a magical missile from point blank with all the rest of her mana opening a hole on its side.

It was still not enough. The Dullahan was still up. But it was stumbling back from having such a wound inflicted upon him.

Pyrzan fell to the ground unconscious with mana depletion.

And then Matthew mustered all that was left of his strength and mana and drove Orpheu's katana deep inside the Dullahan exposed body.

With that attack, the fire on its neck swooshed up in deep pain. It took two steps back as it seemed to look upon all of them with respect.

And then it finally disappeared in a mist of light blue mana only leaving behind a huge black mana crystal.

Matthew was quick to purify himself to get rid of the demonic mana and the unholy mana effects. He then purified Pyrzan's hand that was burning with unholy fire from when she touched the Dullahan to cast her last spell.

The miasma that covered the tower vanished as if it was never there.

The windows opened soon after.

And then the gate to back to Earth appeared bringing fourth the cheering and crying of all those who survived.

"You leveled up!
