Reluctantly turning away from the second human, Scaly rushed towards the forest like she had been doing before she took the opportunity to kill one of the two humans still left alive after the attack of the ancient dire wolf. Doing her absolute best to stop herself from giving in to the greedy thoughts that wanted to try and attempt landing the killing blow on the ancient dire wolf.
"That lizard is still alive…"
At the same time that Scaly rushed towards the forest again, one of the humans currently busy trying to weaken the ancient dire wolf, noticed her as she ran past them and a few greedy thoughts of claiming the bounty for himself quickly began appearing in his head-
Bang!
However, he didn't get the chance to act on these thoughts, as his momentary lapse in attention resulted in him getting sent flying by the ancient dire wolf's tail.
Although he didn't die, he wasn't in any state to chase after Scaly. Not to mention, he had to deal with the ancient dire wolf cubs who happened to be running past the place where he landed.
The reason for them getting so close to the larger battle being quite obvious, as they could also sense the situation of the larger ancient dire wolf deteriorating and thus decided to take the chance to retreat while they still had time.
Luckily for them, the humans on top of the walls didn't have any time to care about them, as they were fully focused on trying to kill the larger ancient dire wolf. Understanding very well that the importance of killing the ancient dire wolf far exceed killing the smaller cubs who could be taken out with relative ease by some of the stronger humans.
Well… Not that lucky for the one who happened to be knocked into their path…
Unaware of this, Scaly continued moving closer to the forest while keeping an eye on the fight between the dire wolf and the humans.
So far, the ancient dire wolf had been pushed to the edge of the forest she was heading towards. Resulting in a few of the trees standing too close to the battle itself being uprooted by the large body of the ancient dire wolf slamming into them as it fought against the humans.
I shouldn't hide anywhere near the edge of the forest…
Thinking this to herself as she saw the unfortunate fate of the trees that happened to block the path of the battle, Scaly decided that she would hide away deep in the forest to avoid becoming an accidental casualty of the battle between the ancient dire wolf and the humans.
After all, even though it looked like the battle could end at any moment with the ancient dire wolf being cut down by the humans, Scaly had a feeling that it wouldn't fall that easily.
Missing one leg or not, it was still on a completely different level when compared to the group of humans, who only barely managed to match up with it due to the help of the three powerful humans working together to restrain it.
Not to mention, the pressure on the ancient dire wolf would decrease a lot when it managed to get out of the range of the humans standing on top of the city walls launching countless arrows and magic towards it from a safe distance.
In a sense, the main reason that the ancient dire wolf was losing out against the humans wasn't those confronting it, but instead the endless barrage of arrows and magic raining down at it from afar. Constantly weakening it with each passing second, as it became more and more difficult for it to resist the attacks.
Roooar-!
Following yet another loud and intimidating roar from the ancient dire wolf, Scaly safely reached the forest without any pesky humans chasing after her.
Finally safe…
Feeling an overwhelming sense of relief washing over her as she saw the large trees stretching far into the sky and the thick foliage covering the forest floor, Scaly didn't stand around for long before she dived into the foliage and disappeared from view.
Now that she had managed to make it to the forest and no longer had to worry about the humans chasing after her, she could be considered to have safely escaped from the human town.
Now, all she needed to do, was find somewhere safe where she could recover… And hopefully also get something to eat before resuming her journey towards the next evolution…
"Everyone! Work together, it's almost dead!"
Not the slightest bit affected by her disappearance and the death of yet another human to her claws, the grand explorer leading the humans called out filled with anticipation as he once again clashed with the ancient dire wolf.
ROOOOOAR-!
BAAAANG!
In response, the ancient dire wolf used all of its strength to send him flying into the ground with its overwhelming strength-
Whoosh-!
However, the grand explorer human didn't receive more than a few bloody scratches from such an attack, as he soon rushed up from the ground to continue fighting with the ancient dire wolf. The culprit behind such a quick recovery being the empty potion bottle now rolling around inside the crater that had been left behind.
For the death of the ancient dire wolf, the grand explorer human had gone all in, even going as far as to use his precious healing potions to avoid giving the ancient dire wolf a chance to use his brief absence to run away and escape into the forest.
Roar…!
Knowing that things were getting worse, the ancient dire wolf began growing more desperate in its attacks, as it signaled for the smaller ancient dire wolf cubs to escape into the forest ahead of it.
Roar!?
Roooaar!
Roar…
Although unwilling at first, the ancient dire wolf cubs soon followed the words and made their way in the direction of the forest.
"You two, stop those ancient dire wolf cubs. Don't let them run away!"
""Yes!""
Unfortunately for the ancient dire wolf who had just signaled for the cubs to escape, the grand explorer happened to notice the brief interaction between them and signaled for two of the level 50 humans to go and prevent the ancient dire wolf cubs from leaving.
The reason was rather simple, as the two wouldn't be able to provide that much help with their strength by staying, while killing the ancient dire wolf cubs might result making the ancient dire wolf do something dumb to try and save them.
If it was before it lost one of its legs, he wouldn't dare to do something like this, as even he didn't have the confidence in stopping the ancient dire wolf if it went on a rampage, but… Now that it had lost one of its legs and had already been significantly weakened, he no longer feared it losing its mind.
On the other hand, he felt confident that he would be able to take advantage of the situation to put an end to the ancient dire wolf.
ROOOOOAR-!
Seeing the two humans moving towards the group of ancient dire wolf cubs, the ancient dire wolf almost instantly understood what was happening as it let out a rage filled roar.
Even though there were only two humans heading towards the ancient dire wolf cubs, it understood that the current strength of the cubs was nowhere near strong enough to withstand those two humans.
Rumble~!
And like the grand explorer human had expected, the ancient dire wolf didn't waste any time as it shook off all the humans before rushing directly towards the ancient dire wolf cubs to protect them from the two humans.
"Hehe, leaving your back exposed isn't a good idea!"
Swish-!
PTSH!
Taking the opportunity that presented itself, the grand explorer human smiled eerily as he swung his weapon and slashed into the defenseless back of the ancient dire wolf demon beast-
Rooar-!
Forcing it to stop before it could stop the two humans. Only able to watch them as it turned around in a worse state than before to fight back against the grand explorer human and the other two powerful humans now able to prevent the ancient dire wolf from moving anywhere. Restraining it to a single location.
Now, it's only a matter of time before-
ROOOOOOOAR-!
As the grand explorer human was already happily patting himself on the back for a job well done with the ancient dire wolf essentially restrained and without any path to escape, a loud and oddly familiar sounding roar echoed out behind him and the rest of the humans…
[Ancient Dire Wolf, lvl 65]
And from the direction of the forest, a brand new and stronger looking ancient dire wolf had silently emerged without any of them noticing.
Not just that, but the killing intent in its eyes clearly indicated that it wasn't there for a kind greeting.
Ancient dire wolf cubs… two ancient dire wolves…
Only now did the group of humans come to a sudden realization that they weren't just dealing with a single ancient dire wolf, but a family…
