Chapter 111: Lycan Beast

It seemed Chang Long's hope was realized because the duo that hit the jackpot was the sibling pair from the Pendragon Guild, Siegfried and Peach Blossom. They had been fighting their way forward for a while when they came upon a large hall. Something was breathing deeply and rhythmically in front of them, but they could not see what it was due to the overwhelming darkness.

"This doesn't look good, brother,"

Peach Blossom whispered to Siegfried.

"Yeah, from the sound of its breathing, it's probably pretty big,"

Siegfried whispered back.

"Let's retreat. Just the two of us might have a hard time fighting it,"

Peach Blossom suggested, while dragging her brother back the way they came.

Plop!

Peach Blossom, focused on the path ahead, stepped on something that made a loud noise. They froze, holding their breath and listening intently.

"Wh... why did the breathing stop?"

Peach Blossom whispered, panicking.

Her question was answered when a pair of golf ball-sized amber eyes appeared, glaring at them. The eyes seemed to rise, standing over two meters tall, as if their owner was getting up. Peach Blossom stood frozen as the owner of the amber eyes slowly moved towards them.

Sniff

The creature with the amber eyes leaned closer, revealing itself to be a large black wolf sniffing the air. It stood on two legs. As the girl locked eyes with the wolf, the system notification popped up:

"Level 99 Lycan Beast King has appeared."

'N... ninety-nine!'

Peach Blossom whimpered internally.

"Don't just stand there, Peach Blossom. Use a fire spell to light up this place!"

Siegfried shouted, gripping his weapon tightly and running away from his sister to pull the Lycan Beast King's attention from her.

The werewolf charged after Siegfried with incredible speed, fast enough to give Kitsune a hard time. In seconds, it cornered him. Spurred into action by her brother's shout, Peach Blossom planted her torch in the ground and quickly cast fireballs the fastest spell, then threw it around illuminating the cavern.

The Lycan Beast King, having been in the dark for so long, recoiled from the sudden bright light, closing its eyes and retreating from on top of Siegfried into the shadows. Siegfried sighed in relief, thinking if it were not for Peach Blossom's fireballs, he would have been bitten in the neck by now.

"Brother, look at this place!"

Peach Blossom called. She noticed that the cavern floor was littered with the bones of various animals, covering the ground.

In the center of the cavern was an ancient stone dining table. Old candelabras, covered in cobwebs, stood on the table. Surrounding it were stone chairs. On the far wall, there was a mural, though some of its paint had peeled away. It depicted a dinner scene where a man at the head of the table was transforming into a wolf, while another man with an angry expression stood at the opposite end. In the center of the table lay a boy's lifeless body, covered in sauce and surrounded by side dishes on a large silver platter.

"Whoa..."

Siegfried exclaimed before falling silent.

"What is it, brother?"

Peach Blossom asked nervously, her eyes fixed on the Lycan Beast King still hiding in the shadows in one corner of the cavern, staring at her like a tasty meal, saliva dripping from its mouth.

"That's a Lycan,"

Peach Blossom was shocked by her brother's words. According to legend, Lycan was once a king of Alcadia, living during the Mesopotamian civilization. But that civilization was supposed to be located in Persia in this game world. How did it end up here?

"Look, there are more murals here. They depict the expulsion of the Lycan and fifty of his offspring from the city,"

Siegfried pointed to the many wall paintings scattered throughout the cavern.

"Don't tell me they were driven all the way here!"

Peach Blossom gasped in astonishment.

"It seems so... But where are his fifty offspring?"

Siegfried muttered, concerned. If the father was level ninety-nine, what level were his children?

Engrossed in the murals, they forgot about the lurking Lycan in the shadows. The moment they let their guard down, it pounced. Siegfried quickly pushed his sister out of the Lycan's attack range and raised his sword just in time to block the attack.

The Hoop Dragon Ring reacted to the intense battle, its eyes flashing and wings flapping as it tried to fly off Siegfried's finger. Siegfried jumped back, distancing himself from the Lycan and releasing the ring. As soon as the ring was free, it expanded in size.

The Lycan Beast seemed startled to suddenly face another opponent. It hesitated, giving Siegfried an opening to attack, but the creature's incredible speed allowed it to parry his strike easily.

Clanggg!

Shunk!

Siegfried's high-level sword shattered, leaving him and Peach Blossom in shock. The Lycan Beast grinned widely, revealing sharp, white fangs. Siegfried quickly regained his composure, leaping back out of the creature's attack range, and shouted to his ring.

"Hoop Dragon Ring, bind it!"

At Siegfried's command, the Hoop Dragon Ring moved swiftly towards the Lycan Beast, but it could not match the creature's speed. Peach Blossom cast a fire spell to block its escape, trapping the Lycan Beast within a ring of flames. Instead of showing fear, it grinned slyly, crouching low before leaping nearly a meter to cling to the cavern ceiling.

The Lycan Beast glared hungrily at Peach Blossom, licking its lips. The girl shivered with fear and threw a large fireball at it. The Lycan Beast jumped towards the fireball and easily batted it away with its powerful arms, heading straight towards Peach Blossom, who stood paralyzed with terror.

Shunkkk!

The Lycan Beast froze, claws extended. Mere millimeters away from Peach Blossom, it stopped. She slowly opened tightly shut eyes as she was waiting for her last moment to see her brother standing between her and the Lycan Beast, his broken sword thrust into its chest, blood seeping out. Unfortunately, he had missed its heart by just a little.

Grrr!

The Lycan Beast howled in pain, slashing at Siegfried with furious claws. Despite knowing he was being attacked, he could not dodge the swift white streaks. Both he and his sister were flung away, blood spurting gruesomely.

Elsewhere, everyone continued down their assigned paths, facing lightning-fast attacks at every turn. The further they went, the darker it became. Fearful and easily scared by ghosts, Oliang, Wet Trash Can and Kimhant's courage faltered. Kimhant, luckily paired with Kitsune, had a large fireball to light their way, keeping most monsters at bay.

Meanwhile, Chang Long and Hulu walked leisurely until Hulu suddenly stopped, staring ahead intently. Chang Long followed its gaze, noticing something moving. She also heard a loud sniffing sound, and soon after, a pair of amber eyes appeared in the darkness.

"Werewolves,"

Davy-chan floated back to Chang Long, speaking.

"They're guarding a door, and there are 4 more of them behind it,"

Hisa-chan reported.

"Is there anything else besides them?"

Chang Long asked. With Hulu in front, the werewolves did not dare attack, merely growling annoyingly.

"The door that leads to another door,"

Davy-chan said. Hisa-chan nodded in agreement.

"Finally, some action,"

Chang Long muttered, drawing the Sovereign Sword. Hulu lowered its head slightly, its unicorn-like horn level with the ground, then charged at the sealed door without a care for the two werewolves, who jumped out of the way in surprise.

"Look at it go!"

Davy-chan shook his head in exasperation.

"Such a headstrong pet,"

Hisa-chan chuckled. Chang Long could only sigh and hurry after Hulu, fearing its impulsiveness might get it hurt.

The six werewolves appeared enraged by Hulu's disturbance. They surrounded Hulu and Chang Long, growling and baring their white fangs. At a signal from one, they all leapt at their prey with impressive speed.

Chang Long was amazed by their agility. The werewolves moved almost as fast as Kitsune, despite being only level forty-five to fifty. She swung her Sovereign Sword in wide arcs, while Hulu charged at them mercilessly with its horn.

Yelp!

Within twenty minutes, the werewolves lay defeated on the ground. The room was not spacious enough for them to move freely, and with their lower levels, they were easily outmatched by Chang Long and Hulu.

Chang Long quickly finished off the downed werewolves and collected their loot: two large pieces of high-quality black wolf pelts and 22,950 coins. As she was about to leave, she noticed a large wooden crate. She used her sword to pry it open and found numerous scrolls inside, many of which were old and brittle. Chang Long regretted their poor condition, as these were skill scrolls that would let anyone learn so many skills without having to waste the effort to find the profession skill NPCs. They could have fetched a good price if intact.

She continued searching the crate to the bottom until she found one scroll still in good condition, not aged by the time. Excitedly, she held it up to the light.

"Dimensional Shift skill... Wow, this is a skill of the Goddess Veritas!"

Chang Long exclaimed in astonishment. She carefully placed it in her bag, cherishing her find. Before leaving the room, she did a quick survey, hoping to find more treasures like the scroll but found only more old crates and crumbling scrolls.

"Let's go, Hulu. Hopefully, the others have as much luck as we did..."

Chang Long said, calling Hulu, who was sniffing around the crates for elemental crystals. Disappointed by finding only old papers, she gave Hulu a small crystal as a reward for its efforts.

Hulu looked like it wanted more after finishing the crystal. So, Chang Long told it,

"You'll get more if you behave. If not, you get! Nothing!"

Hulu rolled its eyes in boredom and followed her reluctantly, knowing she had the crystals it wanted.

Meanwhile, Siegfried struggled to his feet, feeling numbness across his back from the Lycan Beast King's claws. Peach Blossom was curled beneath him, scared but unharmed. He sighed in relief and quickly consumed five blood crystals as the werewolf, or the Lycan Beast King painfully pulled the broken sword from its chest.

Snap!

The Hoop Dragon Ring seized the opportunity and followed its master's command, wrapping around the Lycan Beast King. The creature roared in shock, trying to break free from the strange dragon ring that coiled around it by surprise. The more it struggled, the tighter the ring squeezed.

Creak, creak, creak!

The Hoop Dragon Ring slowly tightened around the Lycan Beast, its jaws steadily consuming its own tail like the gears of a clock. As the ring constricted, the Lycan Beast's face turned pale, and blood gushed from the wound Siegfried had inflicted, making the sight even more horrifying.

"Enough, Hoop Dragon Ring!"

Siegfried commanded. The ring ceased its movement. He allowed the Lycan Beast to struggle for a while longer. Each time it wriggled, the ring's grip loosened slightly, but due to its severe injuries and heavy blood loss, the creature eventually weakened. It staggered, its body flashing red rapidly, indicating it was close to death.

"Kill it, brother!"

Peach Blossom urged, fearful it might break free and attack them again.

"No,"

Siegfried replied, placing a blood crystal into the Lycan Beast's mouth.

"What are you doing, brother? Why help it? Look, it shredded your back and ruined your outfit!"

Peach Blossom asked, bewildered.

Siegfried did not answer. He continued to feed the Lycan Beast blood crystals at intervals of about ten minutes. Peach Blossom, irritated and uninterested in his actions, began exploring the cavern to alleviate her boredom. She threw fireballs ahead to light her path, revealing the cavern filled with countless skeletons and stone furniture scattered everywhere. As she explored, she reached a stone dining table that the Lycan Beast likely used as a bed.

"A chest!"

Peach Blossom exclaimed quietly. She tried to drag an old wooden chest out from under the table, but the chest was too large to fit between the heavy stone chairs. So, it was difficult to pull the chest out easily.

Boom!

Peach Blossom lacked the patience to move obstacles slowly. She used a spell to blast the obstructing stone chair into pieces, coughing slightly from the stone dust. She finally managed to pull the chest out from under the table. Inside, there were no valuable treasures, only an old piece of parchment bound with fine golden silk ribbon.
