PORTAL BEAST SLAYER

Chapter 65: Phasing

Eliza paced around her office, and bit her nails. She had the urge to go back down and make sure that her husband was alright, but she knew she would only be a distraction to him. It wasn't like she could help him fight. He was the one trained for battle, and he was strong, but she still couldn't help but be worried. Her worry was increased after she saw the beasts with her own eyes. They were disgusting and also terrifying.

Alrik used his enhanced speed to try cutting off the beasts,, but unfortunately, they had already cleared the parking lot into the street. People began to scream as they saw the beasts, and the two beasts separated and caused mass panic. Alrik went after the nearest one. He was too exposed to use his inhuman speed, so he threw the sword instead. The blade gleamed through the air, and spun as it sliced off the beast's neck, before clattering to the ground.

Alrik grabbed it as he passed by and chased after the last beast. It seemed to know that death was right behind it because unlike the beasts he had faced in battle, it didn't stop to feed on any of the screaming people trying to dodge out of the way. This beast was more focused on getting away. If it succeeded, who knew where it would hide.

"Get out of the way! Move, dammit."

People could be so stupid sometimes. A few smart ones had already hightailed it out of the vicinity, but some other idiots were trying to obtain video instead of running away. Some were so focused on their phones that even with other people screaming, they didn't pay attention to the danger. The beast ran right into one of them, and she finally looked up and immediately fainted when she saw that what pinned her down was not a stray dog.

Alrik swore because he couldn't risk throwing the blade like last time to avoid hurting the woman, so he grabbed a coffee shop signpost and threw that instead. The beast shrieked as the signpost smacked its head, but Alrik succeeded in making the beast get off the woman. That few seconds delay gave him time to catch up, and he raised the sword in the air. With a quick slash, the beast was beheaded, and Alrik took a deep breath.

He turned and noticed that everyone on the street was now paying attention to him, some were taking videos of him. He would have to walk back to Eliza with all this attention focused on him. He hated it. And now there was no hiding his possession of the Zerdon heirloom sword. Just then, his driver stopped beside him.

"Get in, sir."

The man had been scared out of his mind when the beasts had run past where he was standing beside the car, before getting to the street. Then he was even more shocked to see his boss running after them with a sword, and followed. Alrik was glad for that.

"Take me back to my wife." He instructed, and then called Gaya with his phone that he had left inside the car in his haste to meet Eliza at the parking lot the first time.

"Alrik! I just saw the videos. They're popping up everywhere. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Gaya, but we need to start damage control. First we need a clean up crew to handle those filthy things and get their carcasses off the streets. Then we'll need to contact the High commander. I'm sure they'll have dozens of questions for me. Next, we need to cover up my possession of the sword. Get the IT team to create a fake paper trail of me purchasing the sword from the black market. It's better than people assuming the accusations against me for stealing it from war camp are correct."

"I'll get right on it. The others are headed to you as we speak. I'll be there when I wrap up my last meeting for the day."

"No need. Let's all just meet at home. I'm picking Eliza up." He said and she said okay before hanging up.

"Alrik! You're okay! I was so worried. I saw the videos, but I was still scared something happened. You're going viral." Eliza hugged him, and checked him over for any injuries.

"I'm fine." He said, but at that moment his legs gave out, and she had to hold him up.

"You're not fine, Alrik. What's wrong? Did they hurt you? I can't see any cut, or blood from you." She panicked as she checked him all over again.

"I'm fine. I just used an ability I shouldn't have access to at this level and it drained me. The adrenaline kept me fighting, but I'm feeling it now. Let's go home. I'm sure I'll be fine after a good sleep."

All through the car ride back to their home, Eliza clung to him. Only when she held him close did she feel better. And he was content to lean against her to ease her mind, and also because he felt weak.

They were all waiting in the living room by the time Alrik and Eliza arrived back home.

"That was so badass, the way you took down those beasts." Kellan said with a smile, and Mira smacked the back of his head.

"What? It was cool." Kellan huffed.

"We should be focusing more on making sure he's okay, first." Ansa said and Kellan scoffed before responding.

"Seriously guys, you all watched the video. He chopped those beast heads off so fast, I doubt he even got a scratch on him. He's viral now. I'm sure even Valderra got wind of that epic battle."

"To answer your question before you ask, I'm fine. Just a bit shaken up because if I had been a few seconds late, Eliza would be gone. And weak because I used an ability I shouldn't have, and it drained the fuck out of me." Alrik said and now it was his turn to hold Eliza close.

"Wait. Did you know what was going to happen?" Ren asked, just as Gaya entered the house.

She had rushed over after her call with Alrik, and she paused to hear the answer to the question.

"Yes." Alrik sighed. "I was on my way to pick her up when I got another migraine. I recognised the places this time, and knew it was close to her. Then she called and told me she was already in the damn parking lot. I almost had a fucking heart attack."

"That's true. I'm just thinking about it now because my adrenaline has settled. Zee was by the bedside when we both left home this morning. How did she end up in your hands?" Eliza asked.

"That was the ability I told you about. It's called… Zee, does it even have a name?"

"It's called Phasing. Moving things through the soul plane. When you're strong enough, you should be able to pull your body through the soul plane like you pulled my physical form."

"That's kind of like teleporting then?" Alrik asked.

"Teleporting?" Bruno asked with a frown.

"Zee says it's called Phasing though. I basically pulled her from here to Eliza's office through the soul plane. I can only do that with my body when I'm strong enough. I already feel like I got run over by a train." He said and groaned as he stretched.

Eliza gasped. "Are you really in that much pain? You said you were fine."

"It's not a physical pain really. More like my soul hurts if that makes any sense. I just need to rest."

"Resting won't help. You said it yourself, it's not physical pain. But you should sleep. It will make what I'm about to teach you next much easier."

"I don't think I have the energy for another training right now, Zee." Alrik groaned, and Eliza frowned.

"You just said you needed rest. Why does Zee want to train you after your energy got depleted?" She asked and folded her arms.

"I want to train you on the fastest ways to replenish your energy. One of which is sleep meditation. The land of dreams is between the real world and the soul plane. Dreams are made of mana, and generate mana. Sometimes they remain pleasant, other times they take on the form of nightmares but their source remains the same. I'll teach you how to tap into that so you'll feel better when you wake up."

Zee just explained better. I'm the one who jumped the gun after hearing the word training. She wants to teach me how to recover my lost energy. Just sleeping is not enough to do so since it's not my physical energy that was drained." Alrik said and Eliza sighed.

"Are you going to become a human corpse again? I want to lay beside you, but I don't think I can do that when you're still and cold, like a real dead body."

"Tell her not to worry. That corpse-like state only happens when you're in the soul plane. But I suggest you both sleep with less clothes on if she insists on laying beside you."

"Why?"

"You'll see."
