Apocalypse: Inhuman Ascension

Chapter 67: Miguel

Leon did as his stepsister asked and spent the whole day idling around with her. By night, she was tired and tucked into bed.

Standing by the window in her room, Leon quietly gazed at the moon hanging in the sky.

It was breathtaking, looking no different than it was before the apocalypse.

'At least something from this world hasn't been corrupted.'

Distant roars of zombies filled the quiet night, faintly echoing across the city. The shelter was mostly quiet, with almost everyone already asleep.

Well, everyone except Williams. Leon could visualize that young man standing on the walls quietly, scouting for any potential threats.

Making sure not to wake Cassie, he slipped out of the tower and searched for him. It only took a few minutes to locate him.

"Shadow."

He said, as he stepped beside the oblivious man, gazing at the rest of the city beyond the Red Wings territory. He was clad in an armor that resembled a ninja outfit, covering his head and lower face.

"Ah? Boss?"

Williams was surprised, but quickly composed himself. His gaze towards Leon was filled with admiration and reverence. Ever since he had been recruited and witnessed Leon's strength, he only felt admiration towards the younger man.

"Tough day?"

Leon repeated the same question he had asked Anna.

"Not at all." Williams shook his head, a wistful smile on his lips.

None said anything, only staying on the walls and gazing into the city. The silence was strangely comforting, making Leon's shoulders ease.

Suddenly, his eyes caught a flash of light in the distance. It was really far away, though he saw it immediately. A few seconds later, Williams also noticed it and frowned.

He turned his head to look at Leon, then said, "A vehicle. There's a 50% chance they're coming here."

Leon kept his arms folded behind him, watching as the car lights shifted and turned.

"I didn't expect people to travel this late at night."

He calmly waited for the vehicle to draw close. In the apocalypse, it was slightly safer to travel during the night since the zombies were usually dormant by then. However, it was unwise to travel by car since the sound would attract the dormant zombies.

Just as Leon expected, he spotted a few zombies chasing the car from behind. There were even a few second-level zombies who were able to keep up with the car's insane speed.

Two minutes later, the car was almost at the border of the Red Wings territory. Leon turned to Williams. "Go check them out."

The hooded man nodded, then vanished into the night.

...…..

Miguel had been living a miserable life. A day before the apocalypse started, he was sacked from work after falling into a conspiracy. In that despair, he had returned home to his wife and only son who was still a middle-schooler. While he was stranded and thinking of a way to provide for his family, the apocalypse struck.

His wife had turned into a zombie, almost eating their son. Out of desperation, he killed her to save the boy. From then on, his life became an endless cycle of killing and running. He ensured to provide food for his son, constantly looting supermarkets.

By a stroke of luck, he bought a first-level evolution potion from the Crucible, increasing his survivability in the first month of the apocalypse.

However, after a few months, his strength had become insignificant. He couldn't even venture out to try finding food for his son. Desperate, he could only risk his life and his son's life to reach for hope. He had once seen members of the Red Wings' territory saving survivors.

However, he couldn't trust anyone at that moment. Especially when he had witnessed several cruelties in the apocalypse—women being raped and killed, men being tortured and killed, and children being killed for consumption.

In the end, he could only risk his life and turn to the Red Wings after the desperation peaked. His best bet was to negotiate with them using an item he possessed. Now, he was driving a hijacked car at a speed punishable by law, trying to escape from zombies, and heading towards the Red Wings shelter.

'Hm?'

He sensed the car shake lightly, as if it had run over something. Still, he ignored it and continued driving, glancing at the side-mirror to observe the pursuing zombies.

His son was sound asleep at the back of the car, oblivious to the unfolding chaos. Suddenly, a huge second-level zombie appeared from the side and struck the car.

Miguel's eyes widened and he expertly controlled the car to prevent it from flipping. The side was dented from the blow, and his son was now awake, startled.

"Daddy, where are we going?"

Miguel forced a stiff smile. "We're going to a safe place."

His son, ever obedient, nodded and fell silent. Miguel sped up, ensuring he left the slow zombies in the dust, while the more agile ones still pursued him.

Strangely, as he drew close to the towering red walls in the distance, the zombies began disappearing. A chilling mist had enveloped the streets, making it hard for him to see clearly. The night was eerily quiet.

'Damn! Fuck it! Why wouldn't the world want me to survive?!'

He clearly sensed that the phenomenon was unnatural. His face tensed, knuckles tightening on the wheel.

Suddenly, the silhouette of a man abruptly appeared in the grey fog.

He slammed the brakes, stopping the car just an inch from hitting the person.

Squinting his eyes, he studied the person standing before their car. From the aura alone, Miguel could tell that the person was far stronger than a first-level evolved.

Cold and unflinching, the figure belonged to a young man, clad in black ninja outfit that fluttered in the wind. His face was hidden behind a hoodie, though his silver eyes were visible.

Miguel gulped, then reluctantly stepped out of the car. He held a gun behind him and spoke to the stranger

"What do you want, mate? Look, I'm just trying to go somewhere."

Those silver orbs of light in the stranger's eyes turned to him, cold and analytical.

Holding his gun tightly, he waited for the person standing before him to speak—or decide his fate.
