Shadow Weaver: Sole Heir Of The Night

Chapter 82: Variables

Weavetech had its bases all over the universe, their influence spreading far and wide. It wasn't out of place to see one of them here on planet Yari.

However, for one of them to be in this deep within Astoria's mine where an illegal activity was ongoing, it signaled something far more concerning and deliberate.

'No wonder Veger can create such a large operation without being caught.'

Enzo thought to himself, the weight of what was going on slowly sinking into his head. The thieves guild was one thing, but Weavetech was a giant. Even now he was starting to suspect that the old man was an exalted weaver.

Were their plans completely destroyed? Sword Cleaver couldn't kill two exalted weavers, what if there were more?

'No, we're here to kill Vegar. Weavetech's people aren't our target.'

Killing one person was easy enough; if they put all they had into taking his head alone, they wouldn't need to think about killing people from Weavetech.

'I need to get out of here first,' Enzo thought to himself as he saw the gate in front of him opening slowly. The silhouette of miners fully unclothed and behind them a man in thieves guild clothing with a red badge.

This was to be Enzo's replacement; unfortunately this replacement did not know who Enzo was. So as he crossed through the gates, Enzo made the decision to do something drastic.

From the corners of one of the drilling machines opposite where Enzo was leaning, a pair of shadowy hands suddenly rose, pressing against the machine with all its might.

At that point, the old man with red hair had just noticed the new arrivals and pivoted his gaze to Enzo. He had to confirm these two were the right shifts.

But before he could call Enzo out, he heard a cracking sound to his left as a drill seemed to loosen and tilt slightly, slowly falling to the ground.

"Hurry, hold it up!" The moment he noticed this, he sounded a call for those around to join hands as he rushed to the machine.

They were underground; letting a drill loose was tantamount to a form of suicide.

About 30 seconds later they were able to shut off the drill and, 5 minutes later, safely secure it back into its position.

Only then did the old man feel some relief. However, it was at that moment he realized that the person standing next to him was the new guy.

"Where's your shift mate?" he asked, looking around.

Enzo was gone.

Rushing through the darkness of the mine, Enzo moved from shadow to shadow, hurriedly making his way out. Right now he was moving faster than when he came in for fear of alerting the exalted weaver.

Around 20–25 minutes later he was out of the mine and through the gates.

As soon as he landed on the streets of Astoria, Enzo removed his badge and connected his HUD back on before uploading a few pictures and sending them out with a note.

"We have a big problem."

Among those photos was equipment drilling into the ground with the logo of Weavetech firmly engraved on it.

Somewhere in Astoria

"You like him, don't you? Come on, he's a cute boy." Two girls and a boy walked through the streets of Astoria in the middle of the night.

They weren't to be inside the tavern while Enzo was infiltrating the mines. If he got caught, the first place they would check would be there, so they had to be on the move.

"Enzo is just a friend, besides he's too young," Raven spoke in a rather calm but awkward manner.

It was true that she found his presence very comforting; he was strong, and their destinies were intertwined, but that didn't mean they had to be in love.

She was older than Enzo, in fact.

"Yeah right, a one-year difference doesn't count." Mira retorted, pinching Raven's arm and causing a bolt to shoot through her.

She was never this playful around anyone. Mira had been born in a very toxic orphanage where her blindness was tested over and over again, used to bully her nonstop.

Her sharp mouth was an obvious result of this.

But ever since joining the House of Darkness, she had never felt this disregard. It was like they couldn't tell that she was blind half the time.

Though that might have to do with some other fact… like her powers.

Contrary to her look, she could actually see; well, it was more like she could hear really well. Her hearing not only created 3D visual images in her head, it allowed her to eavesdrop on conversations, hear heartbeats, and with her simulations she could basically understand every object in and out.

Truth was, she was actually very scary.

"Where I'm from, it does… a lot," Raven shook her head bitterly.

It was hard to explain what she felt about Enzo, but calling it love was far-fetched. The main reason she got to know him was her twin star core and his great star core, but most of all there was something Enzo had on him that made her curious.

"Pssst."

Suddenly someone called for them in an alley, a dangling necklace on his neck and a beckoning hand.

"Enzo." Raven recognized him quickly and signaled Yankai as they joined him in the alleyway.

"How was it?" Yankai asked, worried and waiting to hear about his brother.

"I didn't get the chance to see your brother, but the execution is still on so don't worry." Enzo noticed Yankai's interest and spoke calmly.

He didn't have the time to go looking for Yaro as originally planned. With all that happened, it would be strange if he did.

"Oh." Yankai nodded.

Obviously if he was going to rescue his brother, he would have to find a way to do it himself on that day. Enzo and his club couldn't care about him as much as their own mission.

"We need to re-strategize; there's a very strong variable down there in those mines," Enzo spoke in a tempered tone to Raven and Mira.

How would he have known that Weavetech would be involved in all this?
