chapter 8 - The Second Squad

“Getru, on the right!” “I see you!” The man swung his blade down on a soldier’s neck. A spray of crimson blood followed, and the soldier collapsed to the ground. Immediately after, the man pressed his palms together, summoning a thunder dragon that roared down from ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ the heavens, crashing into the cluster of enemies. “Finally… they’re retreating.” A fighter removed his helmet and leaned back against a tree. “Yeah, lucky for us this squad didn’t have any elites. Otherwise—” Getru turned his head mid-sentence and noticed Qiansha standing beside them. “What are you doing here?” Getru asked. “White Wolf, the guild master, gave me a letter. Who’s the captain of your squad?” “That’d be me. What’s this letter from the boss?” Getru took the letter, read it quickly, and his expression shifted to unease. “This letter… did the boss really write it to you?”“I rode all the way here from the Fourth Squad, nonstop. Just so I could join the battle as fast as possible,” Qiansha said impatiently. The nearby squad members gathered closer, curious. Getru looked at his comrades and then at Qiansha. “We’ve got a rule in this squad—strength decides leadership. If you can beat me, I’ll hand over the captain’s position to you. How about it?”“…What a waste of time,” Qiansha muttered, but still walked with the group to a nearby clearing. “By the way, what did you do to earn the boss’s trust like this?” Getru asked, just before their duel began. “I killed two of the Twelve Star Guards of the Heavenly God Cult.”As soon as he finished speaking, Qiansha roared, water element surging around his entire body, and charged at Getru. Getru reacted quickly, raising his blade to block. “Water blades? I’ve only ever seen divine soldiers use those… never a mortal.” Qiansha frowned slightly. The water blades softened and coiled around Getru like ropes. Before Getru could react, Qiansha extended the watery cords, kicked him hard, then yanked on the cord to slam him brutally against the ground. “Good strength. Let’s test your reflexes now!” The moment he spoke, Getru’s body turned into a puddle of water. A heartbeat later, he reappeared behind Qiansha. But Qiansha’s senses caught the move—he spun around, slashing with his sword. Getru managed to block, then spat a ball of water from his mouth. Qiansha deflected the blade, his long sword now wreathed in fire, slashing the water sphere into pieces and creating a thick cloud of steam. From the smoke, a black shadow lunged. Qiansha, seeing it, gathered a massive surge of lightning into his palm. “What the—how many elements do you command?!”Getru was shocked, but stayed composed. He pressed both palms to the ground, summoning a raging water dragon that surged upward, snapping its jaws at Qiansha. Qiansha’s lightning erupted, countless bolts streaking toward the skies. The already overcast heavens split open as a colossal thunderstrike descended, pinning the watery beast into the earth. The surrounding soldiers watching the duel screamed in awe—they had never witnessed such devastating power. Even Getru, the most experienced among them, had only seen attacks of this magnitude from actual gods. “Stop!” Getru raised a hand. “Rookie, you’re stronger than me. We believe you can lead us to victory. From today, the captain’s position belongs to Qiansha!”The soldiers crowded around him, eager to learn the technique he had just used. “Honestly… being vice-captain wouldn’t be so bad either,” Getru muttered under his breath. “Hey, why are you all still standing around here instead of resting?” Getru turned his head—and saw the towering figure of Faluos. “Faluos? What’s the Fourth Squad’s vice-captain doing in our zone?” Getru asked. “What am I doing? I knew you’d give him trouble. I came here just to teach you a lesson!” With that, Faluos grabbed Getru by the ear and twisted. “Wait, wait, wait! You came all this way just for that?” Getru, clearly weaker than Faluos, could only cower. “White Wolf sent me a letter—he ordered me to serve as vice-captain of the Second Squad.” Before Faluos finished speaking, Getru collapsed to the ground. “What’s wrong? Exhaustion from battle?” “Quick, get him to the tent to rest.” “Wipe his face—he’s gone pale as chalk…” … Meanwhile, within the Heavenly God Cult, a cloaked figure spoke in a low, ominous tone. “The wheel of fate has already turned. Mortals cannot escape annihilation. That is why our divine leaders personally lead this war—so that this outcome is inevitable.”“Great Prophet, foretell the outcome of the next large-scale battle,” said a thin, sharp-faced man stepping forward. “Very well… one moment, Lord Ruoxuan.” The prophet adjusted his Wheel of Time and Space, calculating the future of the war. “How goes it?” Ruoxuan asked. “Patience…” Suddenly, arcs of lightning burst from the wheel, flinging the prophet several meters back. The onlookers stared in shock as the wheel began to spin on its own. Finally, an image appeared upon it—an image of a man none of them had ever seen before. He stood with his back to them, his battle robe drenched in blood. In his hands, a long sword carved its way through enemies, while beneath his feet lay thousands of corpses. “Who is this man?” Ruoxuan asked aloud.None of the soldiers recognized him. They had never once encountered such a person on the battlefield. Yet the aura radiating from the vision was undeniable—this man’s power eclipsed everyone present. The wheel then erupted in a storm of wind elements and shattered into pieces. Its fragments scattered across the floor. The prophet scrambled desperately to collect them, while Ruoxuan stood frozen in stunned silence. “Could it be… that in the next great battle, an overwhelmingly powerful figure will emerge to aid the mortals? Impossible. Military division—proceed with the original plan!”
