Xie Shan was especially brutal towards the demons and evildoers he recognized. Once his Nine Heavens Duoluo Divine Blade was unleashed, it could shred both people and treasures into dregs!
In Shu Mountain, it's rare for high monks and Divine Nuns to kill people. Those who have not taken vows to become monks or nuns are also quite vicious when acting. Take Yang Jin, for example, a disciple of Fen Tuo. When dealing with demons and evildoers, her blade would come out swiftly, cutting people into pieces. If that wasn't enough, she'd deploy Fen Tuo Master's Mountain Treasure, the Dharma Flower Vajra Wheel, and grind people to dust.
Yuan Hua, once taken as a disciple by Shi Feiyang, ended up as nothing more than a Ghost Immortal with only his essence because he met his demise at the hands of nun Su Yin. Su Yin was a disciple of Master You Tan, and even as a nun who had taken vows, she was deadly.
Xie Shan was also not one to act hastily. He usually kept out of the world and cultivated in seclusion, rarely getting involved in the disputes of Sword Immortals. It was only because he took in two daughters that he acted; in the original text, he killed because the Demon Path tyrannized them. His intense hatred for the offender was palpable. The Nine Heavens Duoluo Divine Blade, also known as the Annihilation Divine Net, not only minced the offender's flesh but also obliterated his Primordial Spirit into wisps of smoke, and ultimately scattered them completely, destroying both body and spirit.
If one were to judge impartially, whether it was the Demon Path in the original work or Ji Fan in this place, all twelve of them were deemed deserving of death by Xie Shan's standards. The key issue was that this conflicted with his cultivation towards Buddhism.
Having a Vow Body is equivalent to maintaining one's persona. Upon taking vows, one sets related precepts for oneself and follows them rigorously, never deviating. By using these precepts as guidelines, one restrains one's actions, only creating good karma, Buddha karma, not evil deeds. From the outside in, one polishes the body and mind, transforming into the luminous existence of a Buddha or Bodhisattva.
With the Vow Body, subsequent cultivation bears merit. But once the precepts are broken, it's as though one's persona collapses, and all the past practices are wasted!
Xie Shan had become exasperated over the years, ever since Shi Feiyang left Dinghu Peak and flew to the East Sea, starting with the villagers building the first Xie Wang Temple. For many years, his followers grew, and all sorts of strange thoughts bombarded his mind, preventing peace, often leaving him on the brink of Deviation.
Especially since Zen Master Tian Meng initiated him into Buddhism prematurely, he hadn't achieved the Realm of True Suchness described in the original text. Making grand vows was like a small horse pulling a large cart; trying to fulfill them brought no benefit but only endless vexations...
His vow was not made with a heart of "great kindness without reason, great compassion for all," but rather to rid himself of troubles and annoyances. The result was an increase in vexations and a growing anger...
It was like someone hating their job but being forced to go every day, yet during the process, not only not making money but also continually giving away their own belongings, the resentment growing day by day. Finally, upon encountering the twelve Great Mages of the West Pole Sect, his fury erupted like a volcano; he couldn't contain the rage in his heart anymore. His merit woods burned, and he sought to completely eradicate his foes!
His Nine Heavens Duoluo Divine Blade was exceedingly formidable; otherwise, it wouldn't deserve the name Annihilation Divine Net. Once it ensnared an enemy, golden Divine Blades above and jade cutting edges below interlocked, whirling together, immediately destroying the enemy, body and spirit, with no Substitute Technique being of any use.
Yet, Ji Fan escaped with his life thanks to a Life-saving Talisman from Shi Feiyang.
The Talisman was from the "He Sha Book," containing a vast amount of Five Elements Essence Qi. Upon activation, it spread a five-colored light ring, which radiated outward. Outside the light ring, a multitude of Five Elements Divine Thunder erupted upon contact with the falling Divine Blades, causing a violent explosion and forcibly blowing a gap between the golden and jade colored blades. Then, a beam of five-colored light enveloped the person, shooting him like lightning far away.
After Xie Shan had killed, and with the Vow Body broken, there was an instant of awakening and sorrow in his heart. He knew he had ruined everything and also failed the millennium of support and expectation from his senior brother...
If Ji Fan had simply died, Xie Shan would have snapped out of it and hurried back to Zen Master Tian Meng to repent in front of the Buddha for redemption.
However, Ji Fan wasn't dead and had escaped!
This left Xie Shan unable to quell his rage. Yet the moment he calmed down, he thought: since I've already broken my vow, to kill one is to kill, and to kill two is still to kill. This thief was the prime culprit. If I don't kill him now, he might come back for others later, continuing to create Fake Scriptures to discredit me.
Such fabricators of Buddhist Scriptures undermining the Righteous Skill and severing people's Wisdom were the most despicable Demons, worse than murderers. Murders corrupt one lifetime, but these Demons could prevent people from seeing the true Buddhist Law for countless lifetimes, perpetually lost—such fiends must be exterminated without question!
He justified his actions to himself and immediately began casting spells, chasing after Ji Fan, determined to kill him before returning to Zen Master Tian Meng with remorse.
After escaping with his life, Ji Fan did not head to Tianjin to seek help from Shi Feiyang, nor did he fly towards West Pole Mountain.
Had he truly fled in those directions, he would quickly have been caught and killed by Xie Shan. Although Ji Fan's own Mana was powerful, it was still vastly inferior to Xie Shan's.
Instead of flying off into the distance, he fled straight into the crowds!
Arriving at the most populous part of the religious academy, he shouted: "Demons are invading the Righteous Skill, all believers defend the faith with all your might!"
The followers put aside their tasks and gathered around before they could even ask what had happened; Xie Shan had already descended.
Standing amidst the crowd, Ji Fan pointed at Xie Shan and said, "That Demon has taken on the form of Xie Wang Bodhisattva, spoiling the good reputation of our Prince and this very Sect, and he has used underhanded methods to kill eleven of our holy ones! I've also been poisoned by his concoction, and today I face death, for the True God! For the sake of the Creator Tathagata King Buddha, let us together fight to the death to protect our faith and guard the Righteous Skill!"
