Wasteland Development Diary

Chapter 39: Star Sea Radio Station

[Welcome to Star Sea Radio Station, I'm A Jin.]

[I'm A Yin.]

In the studio, A Jin, dressed in a suit, began to work.

Sitting beside him was a semi-transparent person, composed of silicon crystal gemstones, with a silver face and a body mainly in blue and white, like a magnificent, shiny dress, accented with black patterns resembling a wide-edged tie.

This was his partner, A Yin.

The studio, shaped like a small circular theater, sent information from here into the universe through strings, first conducting the entire string network, and then along the energy tide to further places.

A Jin spoke into the mic.

[To start today off, let's have the mic master bring us its daily selection of songs.]

["One Night In Shanghai"]

A strong music began playing in the studio.

Interlude in the music.

A Jin turned off his string mic, took a sip of coffee from the cup beside him, and said to his partner, "How many listeners are online?"

A Yin pointed to its face.

Its face displayed [1017].

Data showed a drop of 11 people compared to yesterday.

But short-term fluctuations are normal because there are always listeners joining this channel, while others close it and leave; comings and goings are a common state.

Since the station started three months ago, the number of listeners has gradually increased, now stabilizing at 800 listeners daily.

Checking the data daily has become A Jin's professional habit now.

"But today there are 4 new viewers who had not appeared before."

A Yin said in its unique rising tone, "The new additions are quite stable."

"Hmm."

As they chatted, the first segment of music ended.

A Jin opened the mic.

[We will now start taking remote connections from everyone.]

A pause.

[This listener, may I ask how you wish to be addressed?]

[My name is... Zhou.]

[Mr. Zhou, hello. Is there anything you'd like to share or inquire about?]

[Zhou: I want to ask why you established this station. I only recently discovered your existence and initially thought you were a predatory civilization searching for other life everywhere, but through my special screening methods, it seems you are not that. So why start a cosmic broadcast that consumes such tremendous energy and consciousness?]

A Jin raised an eyebrow.

[Regarding this question, many listeners asked during the first five episodes. Since you brought it up, we'll answer once again.]

[Star Sea Radio Station is a cosmic broadcast set up by our Wasteland Development Company, aiming to use string technology to offer travelers a way to pass the time and relax, and to provide services like finding relatives and friends.]

[We have two main functions: the first is to provide a platform where everyone can chat and make friends, and the second is to advertise for our company. We welcome and sincerely invite talents from all areas to join our company and become our colleagues. This is also our first time hosting a broadcast, so if anything is inappropriate, please bear with us.]

[Zhou: Understood.]

[Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?]

[Zhou: In some meteorites erupting from high-dimensional space, I found remnants of civilizations. After reading them, they disappeared. They wrote my name and deeds on them, including the civilization I've helped to establish. But now, both I and this civilization continue to thrive... I'm very uneasy, not knowing what this means. Is it a high-dimensional civilization locking in my future?]

[Please don't worry. This is a shard from the time dimension; sometimes, time creatures also bring materials from other timelines where there's a node of your future and your civilization's. All things must end, just like the billions of great entities here once were. Don't fear the distant future; just live in the present.]

[Zhou: I can't avoid fear...]

[Then go and change the future.]

[Zhou: Can the future be rewritten?]

[It can. Once 'Breaking Dimension' is achieved, the time dimension can be entered, and different timelines can be accessed, continuously returning to the past to correct mistakes to extend one's timeline. We confirmed this through the Golden Tree, but how long it can be extended needs further verification.]

[Zhou: I see. Thank you both.]

The second caller was one of their own.

[I am an employee of the Heavenly People, currently serving as a planet engineer. My name is Master of Rain. I would like to ask if the String Civilization can hear this channel? I heard it could...]

[A Jin: Yes, it can. This point was specially instructed by the Chairman; the String Civilization committed the crime of massacre and is currently undergoing confinement and reformation. But a listening channel was specially provided for it; it can only receive, not transmit.]

[Then please help me request a song for it, "You also have today," the one by Cai Yilin.]

[A Jin: Okay.]

Music played.

The String Civilization imprisoned in the sun could hear the song; at the moment, it was being beaten by the Golden Tree - after finally turning the tide, the Golden Tree struck heavily. One wonders if it has the mood to listen to the song, but having something to listen to is better than nothing.

The third listener, however, came prepared.

[I am the Color Painter, a composite civilization. I want to ask if I can post a missing person notice on Star Sea Radio Station?]

[A Jin: Certainly, go ahead.]

[Many years ago, when I was still very weak, I encountered a special being, a Reverse Flow called Fusi Yenie· Nitokeldertran· Biqueqiu Chiefan· Youni... If possible, please help me find it.]

[A Jin: We can't guarantee, but we would try.]

As soon as the words were said.

Beside him, A Yin suddenly gave a thumbs-up gesture.

Which means... found it?

A Jin looked astonished and showed an inquisitive expression.

A Yin nodded.

Information was transmitted via the strings into A Jin's mind.

Huh?

Turns out this long-named Reverse Flow... is actually the true name of the Chairman's shadow secretary, Mr. Xiao Fu!

Indeed, the universe is vast, and such low-probability events occur.

[A Jin: Mr. Color Painter, it seems we have found the one you are seeking. We will attempt to set up a one-on-one connection with them for you, would that be alright?]

[Found them? Yes, yes! As long as it hasn't perished! Thank you, you are truly formidable!]

A short interval later.

Jin finally connected the Shadow Secretary to the radio station.

[Xiao Fu: Color Painter? I haven't heard of this name, but what you said is indeed my name. The Reverse Flow collects the names of all destroyed civilizations and carriers as a record... Do you really know me?]

There was silence on the other side for a while.

[Color Painter: I am Golden Pan, I just changed my name now.]

[Xiao Fu: Golden Pan? So it's you... It seems you've gotten through the hard initial accumulation phase and started interstellar exploration?]

[Color Painter: I've only partially revived the Golden Scale Civilization, still a long way to go. I sincerely apologize for the past; it was more of a betrayal than leaving without notice…]

[Xiao Fu: Let's not talk about the past anymore. Everyone needs to look forward.]

[Color Painter: Are you doing well now?]

[Xiao Fu: Pretty good. I'm working with the Chairman at the company now, and I quite like my current state.]

[Color Painter: You're at the Wasteland Development Company?]

[Xiao Fu: Yes.]

[Color Painter: Your talent will shine brightly no matter what… Sigh, it's difficult here; there are many challenges, energy shortages, radiation pollution, and some peculiar high-dimensional creatures appearing.]

[Xiao Fu: If you have difficulties, I can help you apply for a civilization grant from the company. If you can pass the evaluation review, you'll become our civilization partner, and we'll remotely help you develop, but there will be equivalent exchanges required.]

[Color Painter: I'm truly ashamed. As a defector, I really have no qualifications…]

[Xiao Fu: I'm just following the rules. Any civilization can apply, but it requires a strict review by the company's headquarters, and the final decision is made by the Chairman. I know you somewhat, and providing basic information can shorten this time a bit.]

[Color Painter: Thank you so much! Thank you! Truly worthy of a high-level civilization! I'm very willing to accept guidance, to follow in your footsteps!]

[Xiao Fu: Then I'll make the application, send over your current general situation…]

[Color Painter: Okay!]

...

Time's up.

Jin began wrapping up.

[Thank you all for listening. We'll welcome you again at the same time tomorrow on our Star Sea Radio Station.]

The radio started playing the ending BGM of "Time Traveler."

The 3-hour program finally ended.

Jin stretched lazily.

He looked over at his partner: "Good job."

Yin's face displayed a minimalistic smile line: "Off work, off work."

Leaving the studio.

Jin walked to the back room, opened the refrigeration box, took out two cans of chilled beer, and gave the one labeled [Heavenly People's Exclusive] to his partner.

He pulled the tab and took a big gulp, revealing a satisfied expression.

"Having a drink after work is the most enjoyable."

Yin, on the other hand, put the metal can into his face, absorbing the contents into his body: "Puff puff puff! Comfortable!"

Jin turned his head and asked: "What's in your exclusive beer? There's no ingredient list outside, and only you guys can drink it, I've always been curious."

"This?"

The Heavenly People colleague pulled out the beer can: "Inside are closed strings captured by the company. They're quite special, all retrieved by the Cave People entering twelve-dimensional space. But it's a matter of luck; some closed strings have good stuff inside and taste great, while others are just average, it's like opening a blind box."

"Huh?"

Jin complained: "You guys get to drink such good stuff! Damn! Not fair! We only have regular beer!"

The Heavenly People shrugged: "That's just our perk. I envy you humans, being able to have both material and consciousness sides, able to reproduce, to have offspring, and all these subtle and complex life interactions that we can't experience at all."

"Having kids is troublesome."

Jin sneered: "I don't plan on it yet; I really enjoy my current life and work."

He walked to the gemstone floor-to-ceiling window.

Outside, a thousand miles of ice-covered land, supersonic icy crystal hurricanes roared, the sky steel blue under the refraction of Methane clouds, intermittently falling a diamond rain of carbon atom crystals, while the ground was a surging ocean of liquid diamonds.

Only the bodies of the Transformers remained unaffected on this ice giant at the outermost part of the Solar System.

Neptune is where the Star Sea Radio Station is located.

This is a lonely and dangerous planet.

But it's also a bridgehead for dialogue between the company and the outside world.

The violent natural disasters outside couldn't break through the fortress-like wall of Silicon Crystal Gemstones.

Jin took another sip of his drink.

He looked at his face reflected on the gemstone mirror and couldn't help recalling twelve years ago.

Back then, he was just a young scavenger, rushing towards an unfamiliar bonfire in the dangerous night, where he first met the Chairman by the fire.

The Chairman offered him grilled meat at that time, and no food since then ever compared.

Once, he had to risk his life just to pick up a bit more feces and firewood.

Now, he was broadcasting on the radio with a Heavenly People partner, who were the world's former rulers.

It was a direction he didn't dare dream about…

The world changed so fast.

Jin thought to himself.

He pulled out the gemstone controller, checking the recent advanced data from the radio station.

"Jin, we need to get ready to head back to the company."

Yin placed the beer can into a specific gemstone trash can next to them.

"Go back for what?" Jin asked without looking up.

"It's the company's annual meeting tonight, according to time conversion. The Chairman said all departments have to attend, you forgot?"

Jin suddenly remembered.

He's been thinking about the radio station data every day… How could he have forgotten about it!

"Then I should change into something nice, have they sent notifications? Where is it being held?"

"On the Ring Solar Wall."
